When the siren wails Noel Streatfield
Review of Ballet Shoes - Noel Streatfeild by
helenadollimore
Advantages: makes the war be seen in a different light
Disadvantages: only small writing in most of the editions, get a modern one with bigger writing.
Set in pre war britain, the main charactors are evacuee's who are sent to live in the countyside to get away from London. The author keeps you wanting to read on so well, I have read this book twice in the month I have owned it! I suppose the disadvantages of the book are that the cover on all the editions in my opinion would not attract the younger generation.
At first when they start living at this manor house, the man of the house is very popus ... ...girl in his house and for a while persists the girl (who happens to be the oldest) goes.
Eventually then all learn to get on very well as a family and then when the end of the war comes, bothe families can't bring themselves to say goodbye, not even the man who was grumpy at the start.
Would make very good reading for 9-12yr olds who are just starting to get affected by the true horror of the war as it can give a peace of mind and make you feel ...

Bug is Great
Review of Bug Muldoon and the Garden of Fear - Paul Shipton by
violet
Advantages: Funny and entertaining
Disadvantages: ?
...irritating marketing devices, there was Bug Muldoon - and Bug could teach Hollywood a few things about wit and character development. Bug Muldoon, logically enough, is a 'Bug' living in the mad, bad world of minibeasts that inhabits the garden of a human house. Bug makes his living as private detective in the style of 30s and 40s movies - or perhaps more recently, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. With a surly manner and a taste for puns, Bug is just about ...

Fox in Socks
Review of Fox in Socks - Dr. Seuss by
bluejules
Advantages: Colourful pictures, story is in rhyme
Disadvantages: Some of the tongue twisters are hard to say!
...he went to bed and Fox in Socks by Dr Seuss was the one he picked. I gave him a choice of Dr Seuss books but he chose this one, as he'd never heard it before. Dr Seuss (pseudonym of Theodor Seuss Geisel) was born on 2nd March 1904 and died on 24th September 1991. During his lifetime he wrote nearly 50 children's books. He was probably most famous for The Cat in the Hat, which has also been made into a film. The whole book is written in rhyme which ... ...general story line is Mr Fox is trying to get Mr Knox to lots of different tongue twisters but poor Mr Knox just cannot get his tongue around them (I don't blame him - I found some of them pretty difficult myself!) The first page introduces the story with four words and four illustrations, fox, socks, box, Knox (an unusual yellow creature). Throughout the story we meet lots of interesting characters, including chicks with bricks, Sue who sews crow's ...

It comes round every year, never fear, never fear
Review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Dr. Seuss by
frkurt
Advantages: A grinch who changes, a Who who hopes
Disadvantages: Nothing here that fails or slopes
...oh so priestly
But how could I forget this story
How could it not get some glory
For the Grinch is each of us
In our cars or on the bus
We go our ways and think we're not
We really think we're very hot
But little things can mean a lot
One small voice can hit the spot
And just who are these Who's who sing?
What new learning can they bring?
Where would we be without the tale
That Christmastime will never fail
For humankind will always ... ...that briefest time
Community most real, sublime Regardless of your race or creed
Virtue or heroic deed
Or even the most evil kind
Rarely will be left behind
For grace will work in ways most wondrous
For an event that comes most thund-rous
And, albeit, unexpected
Though, confessing, was expected
For this is a children's tale
The ending cannot make us wail
And as in true prophecy, has hope
Surely we won't want to mope
But joy surrounds ...

BOO!
Review of Room 13 - Robert Swindells by
KarenUK
Advantages: Easy to read, a page-turner in places.
Disadvantages: Cliched, predictable.
...This is my review of Room 13, a novel published in 1989 and the winner of the 1990 Children’s Book Award.
Room 13 is a horror or thriller type of book for children aged around ten to fourteen, I would say. At just over 150 pages long, it is easy to read and after a slightly hesitant start, I finished the last hundred pages or so in one sitting. The chapters are fairly short throughout, which means they don’t look too daunting for kids. ... ...terrifyingly vivid nightmare about a room with the number thirteen on it and what lies within. In the morning, she feels much better and sets out for Whitby as planned with the rest of the second year of the school, which is amusingly(?) called Bottomtop Middle!
As they reach their hotel in Whitby, the dream comes back to haunt Fliss as she sees familiar places and things, which remind her of aspects of her nightmare. She is allocated a room on ...
