One more question...
Review of What Is the Sun? - Reeve Lindbergh by
danielalong
Advantages: Simple questions and answer book
Disadvantages: None
What is the sun?
This is one of those story books I read in answer to the hundreds of questions asked by young children. We have been looking at springtime and the sun at school (not a lot of sunshine yet but it does tend to go with spring!) and naturally the children asked what the sun was.
This book is basically a series of questions asked by a young boy as he is getting into bed and watching the setting sun. The first questions he asks is "What ... ...is a star". This sparks of a whole range of questions from the sun to the moon to the tides, to wind, to winter, to the rain, the flowers and trees and then to the earth
The series of questions lead seamlessly on to each other because they are related in some way, and the end is kind of a summary of all the questions and answers the little boy asks. His mum tells him that the earth is our home, and it's a big ball which has the sun, the moon, the ...

Will You Squill With Will & Squill?
Review of Will and Squill - Emma Chichester Clark by
belfin
Advantages: Very funny story to read with wonderful illustrations
Disadvantages: Tongue twisters will have your kids laughing at you when you get it wrong
...Many of you out there will be aware of this author and illustrator because of her books about Blue Kangaroo, but Emma Chichester Clark has also written quite a few other books too, and this is a fine example.
***The Story***
The story starts with a little boy in his pram and a baby squirrel.
"This is how Will met Squill and Squill met Will.
They were little.
Little Will and Little Squill."
Their mothers tried to keep them apart but they wanted ... ...Will's bed.
One day Will is given a kitten and Squill is forgotten about for a while and gets jealous. The friends fall out but soon they find that they are missing each other and they say sorry before they make up.
The story ends with everyone happy again.
"Squill's parents saw and Will's parents saw that where there's a Will there's a Squill,
and where there's a Squill there's a Will, and it was better that way.
'I hope we'll always be friends,' ...

Confused...he is!
Review of Webster J. Duck - Martin Waddell by
danielalong
Advantages: Heart warming story
Disadvantages: None
Webster J Duck
A heart warming book by a well known children's author
STORY AND ILLUSTRATIONS
We start with a lovely double page spread showing a lake, and close to the lake, surrounded by reeds is a little blue egg, which holds Webster J Duck "all folded up so he could fit inside".
When Webster stirs, the egg begins to crack, and out he comes- actually he falls out. Undeterred, he stands up, and so begins his quest to find his mum. He wanders ... ...large and friendly looking dog, Webster of course, quacks. In reply, the dog goes "Bow- wow". On the strength of this and being an intelligent kind of chap, Webster J Duck deduces that the dog is not his mother because of course, his mum would make the same sound as him. He does however now think of the dog as the Duck with the waggledy tail.
In this way, he meets a sheep, and a cow. The sheep, in Webster's mind, becomes the woolly duck and the ...

Toilet Humour
Review of Who's in the Loo? - Jeanne Willis by
Borg
Advantages: Great fun, hits the spot.
Disadvantages: None
..."Is it a stoat who's making a stink?
Or a pig who's washing his pants
in the sink?"
There, it is a simple plot, and not too taxing. The book was written by Jeanne Willis and Adrian Reynolds did the artwork. Willis has other books to her credit, such as 'The Really Rude Rhino,' and 'Grill Pan Eddie.' I think I will be looking out for more of her books!

One man's sidewalk is another man's footpath
Review of Where the Sidewalk Ends: 30th Anniversay Edition - Shel Silverstein by
ally2kc
Advantages: Fun, clever and even insightful poems to spark children's imaginations
Disadvantages: The annoying americanisms
...from £6.50
What is Where the Sidewalk Ends?
***************************************
Where the Sidewalk Ends (30th Anniversary special edition) is a collection of children's poems ranging from short and silly to long and thought-provoking.
Who is Shel Silverstein?
***************************
Shel Silverstein was not only one of America's best known and well-respected children's author. He has also received a serious fan base as a radio DJ, an ... ...substance on a regular basis. Where the Sidewalk ends offers plenty of substance.
Don't get me wrong - there are plenty of ridiculous, silly, just for the sake of it poems included - don't expect a life lesson from "The Naked Hippo" for example, but the collection is also peppered with pieces that challenge some pre-conceptions kids can grow up with and stand up to some serious issues facing kids these days. Topics like bullying and respecting each ...
