Innocence versus experience
Review of Noughts And Crosses - Malorie Blackman by brokenangelkisses

Advantages: Clear plotline; interesting ideas; involving characters
Disadvantages: Will make you sad

...our current history. The noughts in this tale have only recently been freed from slavery and are still treated as second class citizens. One of the key events early on in the book is the attempted integration of Noughts into Cross schools; the ways that teachers and pupils react is simultaneously understandable, disgusting and intensely sad. As Callum struggles to make something of himself in a hostile world, Sephy tries to find a way to reveal ...
...allows you to realise how poisonous racism really is without feeling that you are being preached to. The technique is particularly powerful because we follow Sephy and Callum's relationship and attitudes as they grow from innocent young children into increasingly angry teens. The Tiger who came to Tea
Review of The Tiger Who Came To Tea - Judith Kerr by barberanna72

Advantages: Delightful bedtime story
Disadvantages: None at all.

...she absolutely loved it. The illustrations are still the same. In fact, it was read so much, we still know most of the dialoue by heart. The story is very simple. Sophie and her mum were having tea one evening when there was a knock at the door. After failing to guess who it may be, Sophie opens the door and there is a "big, furry, stripy tiger". The tiger comes in for tea and over the next few pages eats everything on the table, in the fridge and ...
...find including "all the water in the tap". When Daddy gets home, they tell him what has happened and he decides they must go out for tea instead. The following day, Sophie and her mum go shopping and they buy lots of food, including, a "very big tin of tiger food." I know it sounds a bit of an odd story, but its a wonderfully simple one which delights children and is an excellent start to introducing the pleasure of reading. ... Read review

Review of The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle by sheri3004

Advantages: One to return to again and again (and again......)
Disadvantages: None

"In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf…." I can recite the whole thing (well, maybe getting a little confused with the order of the different foods) and I bet I'm far from the only one! Apparently, a copy is sold every ...
...George W Bush has listed the book among his favourites from when he was growing up… a statement which raised a few eyebrows as he was, in fact, twenty-three when the book was first published in 1969. ~The Author~ Author and illustrator Eric Carle was born in 1929 - The Very Hungry Caterpillar is his best known book, but he has also written and illustrated many others, over 70 in total. Carle was born in Syracuse, New York to German emigrant parents, ... Read review
