Holy Momma
Review of LG BH100 by thewhitewolf

Advantages: both formats in one system, great pictures as you'ld expect
Disadvantages: very very expensive, no internet output

Saw this at a friends house the other day - well i couldnt miss it since he was carping on and on about it. You might ask what all the hullabaloo was about? Well, this is the first dvd player that incorporates both blu ray and hd-dvd in one pretty little package. And that comes at one hell of a damn price. My mate brought it for close to £900 pounds and i almost hurled. I could have brought two PS3's or four XBOX 360's for that amount. Still though ...
...of the two is limited in practise. The blu ray works great and looks great as does the hd-dvd, yet the hd only works on the full movie parts. you cant watch the special features which was a bummer as i brought over one of my best movies - Dumb and Dumber :) Great picture and sound quality for both platforms and you can never fault the images that you see. Vivid, good contrast, very very sharp with very little picture noise. In terms of output its ... Read review

Samsung DVD-HD860
Review of Samsung DVD-HD860 by pieman1970

Advantages: Near HD upscaling at a very cheap price
Disadvantages: No virtual surround sound, not all DVD upscale well

...players I discovered the Samsung HD860 was one of the latest models (2006). As I had purchased an HD compatible plasma it needed to have the best available source I could afford for the money and at £65 this slim and modern looking player was a bargain. The player will output a normal scart signal (composite or RGB) and via the HDMI lead upscale the signal to either 576p, 720p or 1080i respectively (only with an HD TV). What this means if that the ...
...pixels of the DVD and increase them to near full hd resolution. The results can be simply stunning on a clean or new DVD, older DVD titles do not benefit as much as they contain more noise which does'nt help with the upscaling process. The DVD comes with a simple remote to access the various menus which includes the audio setup which will output dolby 5.1 if required to a compatible surround amp. Unfortunately there is no option of a virtual surround ... Read review

Excellent all round DVD player
Review of LG Electronics DNX-190 UH by Arboy1971

Advantages: USB, DivX, multi-region
Disadvantages: Periodically loses multi-region, no USB access from remote

Had this player for over a year now and has been brilliant all round. Used remote hack to make multi-region and changed video system from PAL to NTSC (hold Pause until display on player flashes) to stop judder on playback. Has played everything I've thrown at it. It did lose it's multi region setting recently but used remote hack to re-set factory settings and then Zoran file burnt to CD to access region setting menu and now fine again. One drawback ...
...have to press a button on the DVD player to access the USB stick and this can't be done on the remote. Not a major problem though. Has HDMI out which provides better picture quality. Coaxial out for digital sound. Decodes Dolby 5.1 and DTS. As a bonus, it looks pretty sleek too. ... Read review

Worth it!
Review of Samsung DVD-1080 P 7 by lordo69

Advantages: Great quality
Disadvantages: Not very advanced interface

This DVD player is the one that i have in my lounge and is a great one in my eyes and i think i will have it for years to come. It goes very well with my sony LCD HDready television and was very easy to set up and also very quick. It plays pretty much anything and has great quality and is very easy to use, i.e. the remote is very simple layout but with most features available. Plus this dvd player is also a great buy because it is under £100 and ... Read review

Samsung TV perfect companion
Review of Samsung DVD-F1080 by tubster011

Advantages: Size, Upscaling and Sound Quality
Disadvantages: Remote control, menu system keeps forgetting settings...

This Samsung 1080p DVD player is the perfect companion for any of the latest Samsung LCD and Plasma TV's. We currently own the Q96 Plasma model and the F1080 fits just under the TV, it is smaller than the stand on the TV. But it has all of the features of the chunkier 1080p dvd players. Another plus to Samsung customers is that it has the Anynet+ function, meaning you can use the tv remote to control the DVD player. This is suggested as the remote ...
...small and useless in my view. There are a few firmware faults with this model, for example it sometimes won't play a DVD on initial startup and you have to restart the player as it just blue screens. The upscaling quality is good, however I have only my xbox on vga connection to compare it to. Upscaling quality: 8/10 Connections: 9/10 Remote: 2/10 Menu System: 5/10 (can be annoying at times) Sound Quality: 10/10 (on 5.1 setup) Anything else ... Read review
