...imation and Philips discs now) stop me from fully recommending this recorder. A good shot as always from Matsui - you definately are getting what you pay for.
Good for an entry level machine for DVD recording, but enthusiasts and more experienced and needy recorders might want to look elsewhere! ...

Philips DVDR 3300H
Review of Philips DVDR 3300 H by
LawrenceP
Advantages: Hard Disk recording, time shifting, 8hr recording on dvdr, firewire input
Disadvantages: can't record directly to dvdr, 5min chapters, can't adjust timeshift buffer
...the firmware first from the Philips website. You will have to play it from the beginning or select chapters. The chapters are automatically inserted at 5 min intervals, again a feature which cannot be adjusted but only turned off completely. From the same menu you can Name recordings, delete or protect them from deletion and transfer them to a dvdr/rw. The dvdr 3300h accepts the +/- r/rw formats and also +r DL.
You can select various recording qualities ... ...new firmware/software fixes from the Philips website. Support there looks quite good but don't expect a speedy reply to any email you send.
I am currently have my recorder hooked up to my security cameras. The timeshift buffer is very valuable here because if anything happens you can just rewind and save the bit you want while it continues to record.

Junking the VCR for a modern replacement
Review of Panasonic DMRES10 by
AlistairBirch
Advantages: Really good picture quality and ease of use
Disadvantages: DVD-RAM discs may not play on other DVD players in the home
...that drew me to the Panasonic was my hope of reliability. A couple of times I have bought the cheap and cheerful model only to find that it packs up 2 days after the warranty has expired. I know, I could have just bought a better warranty pack in the past but I hadn't.
I read articles in magazines like Which, that helped point me towards the Panasonic, and a few web searches later I had bought it online for about £130.
