The True Truth
Review of 24th Day DVD by
sghawken
Advantages: Incredibly thought out
Disadvantages: Annoying flash back sequences
...or not at all. The 24th Day is certainly a movie to keep you on your toes. James Marsden stars as Dan, and he without a doubt owns the movie, his acting style is very real, very true. While not knocking Scott Speedman's performance as Tom, he just fails to stand in the same light as Marsden. If it were not for the bright light that shines from Marsden then you might have a very different movie. What you have as a result is a very powerful, very compelling ... ...your whole attention.
Where 24th Day fails is in the flashbacks, this method works well in some movies but fails dismally here. I often find myself looking forward to the flashbacks in movies to see the story progression; here we have a series of brightly lit images that only come together in the final few minutes. If this was a more tense, more horrifying thriller then I believe this would hold more power. However it just gives a feeling of weakness ...

3 IRON (2004) [FILM ONLY REVIEW]
Review of 3 Iron DVD by
Charles_Strickland
Advantages: Intensely romantic, atmospheric, a brief display of a future filmmaking genius
Disadvantages: Borrows ever so slightly from Wong Kar Wai's CHUNGKING EXPRESS
...his crumbling body with a 3 iron golf club. The bruised and battered wife, without saying a word to her husband as he gasps for breath in the garden, silently joins the young man on his scooter. They drive off into the night and suddenly home-inhabiting doesn't seem so lonely a life after all, as long as they're together.
A warm, astonishing film from an astonishing director, 3 IRON might just break your heart. Although the premise is taken in-part ... ...the young man and, moreso, the bubbling genius of a director who, with 3 IRON, in under an hour-and-a-half, is quite clearly on the verge of creating that rarest of artistic distinctions these days, of filling that vast cinematic chasm of late, with a cinematic masterpiece. May it happen soon. ...

a good film, with good acting
Review of In Her Shoes DVD by
nicnncha
Advantages: good story, good acting, believable
Disadvantages: dragged at the start
I went to see this in the cinema when it came out, and it i have to say i wasnt too sure i liked it when i came out of the cinema. It was quite a serious type of comedy, which i wasnt expecting. I rewatched it last night though, and have to say i prefered it second time round. It was about 2 sisters who are completely different, one is played by toni collette and shes sensible and hasnt alot of confidence in herself, shes not very successful with ... ...her ruin her sisters life in the beginning of the movie. She doesnt have alot of thought for others, especially her poor sister who does everything for her. After months apart, Cameron Diaz's character maggie, takes stock of her life and then goes on to sort herself out, and she becomes a much nicer indidivual. You see her become more sensible and alot more caring and her transformation is great and i really did like the new maggie. You acting is ...

Empire of the Sun!
Review of Empire Of The Sun (Special Edition) by
danmclovin
Advantages: Beautiful, Heartwarming!
Disadvantages: None!
Released in 1988, Empire of the Sun is a brilliant epic movie set during the second world war. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie introduced a very young Christian Bale to the silver screen, who we all know by now has gone on to become a household name.
The movie is set around the Japanese invasion of China, during the second world war. Jamie Graham (Christian Bale), a precocious and priviledged young boy, and his parents are forced to flee ... ...to the invasion. Amid the mayhem of the escape, Jamie is separated from his parents, and returns to his old house in hope that they will return there to be re-united. As the days and weeks go by, with no sign of his parents returning, and with every last scrap of food having been consumed, Jamie is forced onto the streets of Shanghai, where he is rescued and taken in by two Americans, Basie (John Malkovich) and Frank (Joe Pantoliano).
Basie and ...
