Power and principles
Review of Absolute Power (RESCHEDULED) (DVD) (Wide Screen) by
JVL
Advantages: Interesting plot, good acting, makes you think
Disadvantages: No special features on DVD (but this was the German version...)
I remember being disappointed with this film when it went on cinema release, I’m still not entirely sure why. Maybe I was expecting another gun-slinging performance by Clint Eastwood, but ‘Absolute Power’ is a very different proposition to Eastwood films such as ‘Hang ‘Em High’ and ‘Dirty Harry’. The pace is quite slow, although this does not necessarily have to be a bad thing, and the subject matter ... ...good versus bad plots of his earlier movies. The plot, which has been criticised in many quarters for stretching the bounds of audience belief, is basically as follows: Eastwood plays the role of Luther Whitney, a professional thief of the highest calibre who has apparently retired from top-level crime. He is seen attending an art class in a Washington museum, but the scene then changes to him breaking into a mansion somewhere in the countryside. ...

Blood Work - Starring Clint Eastwood
Review of Blood Work DVD by
jenhen87
Advantages: Well written story by Michael Connelly
Disadvantages: The film is disapointing as they have changed the story slightly. The investigation isn't as intense as the book described it.
I know that you can't get as much information into a 90 minute film as you can in a 400 page book, however this film disapointed me.
Lets move away from the book because the film is quite a good watch.
Clint Eastwood stars as Terry McCaleb, an ex police investigator.
After leaving the force in need of a heart transplant, McCaleb finds himself on the case of a shooting in a corner shop. With the help of his trusted friend Noone he investigates ... ...linked. The film sways into the usual police investigation movie, far-fetched clues begin to appear as to why the murder had taken place.
At this point I am actually realising that I have forgotten the main body of the plot. Most of the details I am thinking of are actually from the book. The plot changed dramatically and the killer ended up to be a completely different person. The film is well staged though, the characters are intoduced well and ...

Basic Instinct rip-off
Review of Body Of Evidence (Wide Screen) by
bigmike33
Advantages: If you enjoy courtroom dramas
Disadvantages: Acting, cardboard characters, dull.
...because I'm cruel like that. Body of Evidence isn't as bad as Swept Away, but then again it isn't much better, with the acting and direction mediocre at best. This film caused a high amount of controversy when it was released in 1993; not just because we see Madonna rolling around naked for a lot of it, but because of a certain scene involving hot candle wax. This film tries to imitate the much more successful and well known 'Basic Instinct' but ... ...throughout this review if you're looking for a bit of cheap mindless entertainment then this is it, although it will probably leave you laughing more then anything. In my opinion Basic Instinct is the best of these types of films, with Body of Evidence an inferior and badly acted copycat. ...

Forget Trainspotting!
Review of Christiane F (Wide Screen) by
andie2005
Advantages: Very realistic.
Disadvantages: Dubbed English
Christiane F or ‘Wir kinder von Bahnhof Zoo’ Widescreen Version
Plot line: “This movie portrays the drug scene in Berlin in the 70s, following tape recordings of Christiane F. 14 years old Christiane lives with her mother and little sister in a typical multi-storey apartment building in Berlin. She's fascinated by the 'Sound', a new disco with most modern equipment. Although she's legally too young, she asks a friend to take her. There she meets ... ...Detlev
Jens Kuphal - Axel
Christiane Reichelt - Babsi
Daniela Jaeger - Kessi
David Bowie - Himself
A friend of mine let me borrow the book of this a few years ago, the book is brilliant. I avoid watching a lot of films that are based on books that i have read but just had to see this one, was interested to see how the story would be portrayed on screen, I just hoped that this film wasn't going to disappoint.
Christiane F or ‘Wir kinder von ...

Not As Shocking As It Was
Review of Last Exit To Brooklyn DVD by
sghawken
Advantages: Turbulant tale of life in 50's brooklyn
Disadvantages: Very dark
...in 1991 the year after Last Exit To Brooklyn was released I remember watching the movie and thinking it was the most grim and disturbing movie I had ever seen. While 17 years later it certainly falls into the same categories, the passage of time means that the impact here is far less fierce. Last Exit To Brooklyn is set rather unsurprisingly in Brooklyn during the 1950's in a time where money was harsh and striking was the order of the day. Following ... ...bottom.
I can't say Last Exit provides any joy, in fact it's one incredibly harsh journey, that only seems to witness the darkest parts of human nature. It's imagery so intense that the movies tales are literally burned into your brain.
Harry Black (Stephen Lang) is the manager of a strike office; a man who has profited through every else's misery, using strike expense money like it was his own he has parties, drinks excessively, and shops in the ...
