Samsung Drives - Thumbs definately up!
Review of Samsung Super-WriteMaster SH-S202J by Invader_Zim

Advantages: Fast, Quiet, Affordable
Disadvantages: none

...past. But I bought a Samsung drive (Super-WriteMaster SH-S202J) from www.ishift.co.uk and I must say that not only is it just as fast (20x) and I have seen no real difference in performance between the IDE or SATA drives as the Liteon and Pioneer drives but it is much much quieter! To be honest the whole build quality of the Samsung seems a lot better as well plus it came with the software I needed, unlike many of the Pioneer OEM drives I have bought. ... Read review

Affordable quality drive
Review of Samsung SH-D162C by qsad

Advantages: Good quality; quiet operation; very affordable
Disadvantages: Rather high CPU usage

...the drive's cache size? The Samsung has only 256kB of cache (as opposed to the Plextor's 2MB). DAE quality was rated "10" (perfect) with the "Accurate Stream" feature present. CPU usage with CD-R dics was fairly good for a quality drive: 0% at 1x, 1% at 2x, 2% at 4x and 4% at 8x. CPU usage reading DVDs seemed staggeringly high at first glance: 6 % at 1x, 19 % at 2X, 47 % at 4X and 77 % at 8x reading a pressed DVD-ROM, and even higher with a burned ...
...% at 4x and "n/a" (out of range? ;-)) at 8X. Then I measured CPU usage with the (generally acclaimed) Plextor drive: it was just as high. Not being an expert in this field I can only speculate that during normal operation CPU usage won't be a problem; DVD film playback occurs at 1x; audio file playback off DVDs also doesn't require higher read speeds. Aside from file copying, the only circumstance I can think of where thed drive would have to provide ... Read review

Cheap and Efiicent
Review of Samsung SH-S183A by will1992

Advantages: Cheap. SATA.
Disadvantages: None

I bought this as a budget DVD writer and that's what it is. I bought it white boxed with no cables and just the unit and the software CD. The user manual was on the CD and also it cam with; Nero Express 6 - Wizard for writing to the disk, in CD 4, Nero BackItUp - Utility to back up files onto DVDs/CDs, Nero Recode- DVD Recoding, Nero Vision Express - Making slide shows and DVD movies, DVD Lightscribe and Nero Showtime - A DVD player to watch DVDs ...
...value for money and is a fast useful DVD/CD drive which support nearly all widely used formats including DVD-RAM. It requires a spare SATA slot and uses a SATA power connector not the 4 Pin Molex connector. The SATA connector is useful as it requires much less space than a IDE cable which is usefull if you need good airflow through your computer. ... Read review

Got a Floppy Disk?
Review of Freecom Floppy disk drive 1.44 MB by burns2007

Advantages: Quick, Easy, Reliable, Small, Fits into any pocket or bag
Disadvantages: Faded out use lately

I originally bought this external floppy drive a few years ago after the standard for laptops was not to have an inbuilt floppy drive already in them however at the time floppy disks were still in use from time to time. It doesn't mean that this can't be used for desktop computers that don't have internal floppy drives. Power ********* Usually when having an external device like an external hard drive or optical drive you would usually need more ...
...the power into a power socket in the wall and a separate cable to send and receive data between the device and the computer however with this external floppy drive it has completely changed. Now all that is need with this floppy drive is simply just one USB cable with a mini USB connected to the drive making it quick and easy to use when your on the move as well as easy to fit and store on the move with no extra cabling which could possibly get tangled ...
