R.H.S. Encylopedia of Gardening
Review of RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening - RHS by
Gill_J
Advantages: Everything you need in one book.
Disadvantages: Very Heavy.
If you are looking for a Reference Book that covers every aspect of Gardening even for the beginner, this is the one for you.
The book is published by Dorling Kindersley ISBN 0 7513 08625, and written by members of the The Royal Horticultural Society. I love gardening, I always have and having moved into a new home 2 years ago gave me a whole new garden to create. I think of a garden as an extention of your home and there is nothing I like to do ... ...a garden can offer. What we had was a lot of Yorkshire stone walling, a poor lawn and lots of crazy paving, I hate crazy paving, where there should have been flower beds. We did have a tree, problem was though it had not been planted deep enough and it had to come down as it was leaning dangerously, That was the back garden.
The front was a hedge a small lawn and the ramp for my chair which wound its way down to the front door. Not a lot to work ...

A Wealth of Garden Knowledge in One Book
Review of RHS Gardeners Encyclopaedia - RHS by
petehall
Advantages: A mine of gardening information.
Disadvantages: Expensive at full price.
...of gardening information. The RHS are famous for their outstanding books and this one justifies their reputation. I found it to be highly readable and includes good advice on any gardening related topic you could think of. Although the cover price is a hefty £29.95, the book can be obtained for as little as £10 if you know where to look. (I bought it from a "Books by Weight" shop in Llandudno and have used it almost endlessly). The ISBN is 1-85833-579-5.

Good things come in small packages
Review of RHS Plant Guide - RHS by
blondmaiden
Advantages: Loads of information in an easily digested form
Disadvantages: Not all species listed
The RHS are well known for their great books and these are no exception. They are published by Dorling Kindersley whose books are usually full of beautiful coloured pictures so they form a great team.
These little books include one on; Roses, Perennials, Garden Trees, Shrubs and Climbers and Bulbs. They give information on care as well as propagation and planting.
What I like best about the books is the way they are laid out. They go through each ... ...in some of the other RHS books and works a treat.
All the plants have coloured pictures as well as details of height and spread, cultivation, native habitat, habit and propogation. They also have common names listed in case the Latin one escapes you. The books are reasonably priced and not so large that your arm breaks when you read them like many other gardening books. ...

Much More Than A Month by Month Guide to Gardening
Review of The Garden Year: Practical Gardening Month by Month - Richard Bird by
petehall
Advantages: Month-by-month layout.
Disadvantages: Unlikely to be discounted.
The Gardening Year from Readers' Digest is refreshing in its month by month layout. The book takes you through the year, each month spelling out what you should be planting, which plants are in flower and which have coloured foliage at that time. There is information about what steps you should be undertaking to get the best from your garden at that time, as well as lots and lots of useful charts and tables about annuals, perennials, herbs, trees, ...
