"...and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt"
Review of The Book, the Film, the T-shirt - Matt Beaumont by Soho_Black

Advantages: Very funny in places
Disadvantages: The title takes ages to say

Having thoroughly enjoyed “E”, the debut novel from Matt Beaumont and been quite amused by the horribly obvious cash-in follow-up that was “The E Before Christmas”, I was delighted to see a new novel from the author. As much as anything, I’d been impressed by the way “E” and its companion were completely written in E-Mails, with date headers and everything. That originality, combined with the fact that it was also a pretty funny book, made Matt ...
...with his debut novel “e”, the story is set around life at an advertising agency. This time, though, rather than the setting being in the office, they’re at a film studio in Hounslow, in the middle of shooting an advertisement. In an effort to make it as good as they can and increase the agency’s profile, they’ve hired two of the biggest stars of American TV to play a couple. Unfortunately, in between signing to film the advert and coming to film ... Read review

Lock, Stock and One Smoking Barrel
Review of Barrel Fever - David Sedaris by BoyWonder7

Advantages: The Santaland Diaires, gives 'freaks' a voice
Disadvantages: Some stories are too dark and disturbing to be funny

Barrel Fever is a collection of short stories that have come from the twisted mind of David Sedaris and some essays that have come from the equally twisted life of David Sedaris. His humour is bleak, dark, disturbing and also laugh-out-loud funny. In his stories Sedaris writes as a horny teenager, a waster, an unloved suicidal woman, a father who's doesn't bother with hospitals because he believes he can treat everything himself - each one an American ...
...the wonderful Santaland Diaries, detailing Sedaris' time working in Macy's as an elf - you'll never think of the department store Santa in the same way again! His humour is very near the bone and sometimes Sedaris goes too far and repulses his readers. But in the end the writer's unusual way of looking at things and clever obsevations save the day making this a must-read book. ... Read review

Happy Birthday Garfield!!!
Review of Garfield at 25: In Dog Years I'd be dead - Jim Davis by eve6kicksass

Advantages: funny, partcularly for fans
Disadvantages: not many, except that it doesn't even MENTION the live action movie

...wonderful collection of everything that Garfield is and what he has become. The book is entitled "In Dog Years I'd Be Dead," which should give those who have never heard of Garfield an idea of the kind of wit and humor he generates on the page. The book features 20 whopping chapters, each detailing a specfic level of the phenomonon we know as Garfield. Naturally, the book explains how Garfield was born, in the mind of Jim Davis, who was a struggling ...
...feline. As most Garfield fans know, his look and appearance have changed throughout the years. In 1978, he was this fat lardball, though he slowly changed, getting bigger eyes, better features.....though retaining the whole time, which he has always been proud of. For those that do not know the additional characters, I'll refresh for you. There is Jon Arbuckle, Garfield's owner, a cartoonist and lovable idiot who has been trying for years to impress ... When the Government is totally Barking....
Review of Queen Camilla - Sue Townsend by carcraig

Advantages: Hilarious, witty, a rollicking good read
Disadvantages: Offensive to union jack waving royalists - or is that an advantage??

...local scaffolding company. The Queen lives alone with her dogs as Philip resides in appalling conditions in Frank Bruno House, a nursing home. In the outside world the Prime Minister and Leader of the Cromwell party, Jack Barker, has had it with politics and devises an ingenious plan to lose the next General Election. The leader of the Opposition, Boy English, a "toff-lite" has vowed to restore the monarchy if elected. Unfortunately for him, the ...
...the unpopular Camilla is his Queen and then their secret love child emerges from the woodwork and threatens to throw the election strategy of BOTH parties into jeopardy…..Fortunately the nation's dogs have a plan B.... This is a very funny book which actually had me laughing out loud in parts (very annoying for my husband!) Particularly amusing are the conversations and witty riposte of the numerous dogs in the book, Townsend seems to bring them ... Read review

Classic Clarkson: Hilarious
Review of Born to Be Riled - Jeremy Clarkson by jonwebb5

Advantages: Very funny, huge variety of subject matter, lots of book for your money, informative, passionate
Disadvantages: Doesn't suit being read in one go, topics recycled and stale towards end

Born To Be Riled is good. It's probably not Jeremy Clarkson's best book, but it certainly makes for great reading, either as a bedtime book, where the short columns are ideal for a quick spell, on the commute or on holiday. It will certainly make you laugh, and the variety is great. It's just missing that little something. The best, and in some cases worst, thing about Born To Be Riled is the fantastic scope of subject matter. Clarkson writes about ...
...connects you to the book. Born To Be Riled is humorous and interesting to read, and is very easy to pick up and get into, perhaps making it best read in short spells, allowing more attention to each individual column. Born To Be Riled certainly has the wit and charm of Clarkson's other books, and the only thing that really lets it down is perhaps it is so long, that by the end, you've read about everything two or three times. However, it is definitely ... Read review
