Pointless yet funny, useless yet addictive
Review of The Book of Useless Information - Keith Waterhouse, Richard Littlejohn by eslffkjp123

Advantages: Fantasically useless!
Disadvantages: Uselessly useless!

++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Basically, its a gigantic bullet-pointed list of the most useless facts you will ever encounter. However, saying this, i did actually find myself learning a few of them to bring up in future conversations (yes, i'm sad). If you have a random, silly, or mad sense of humour, (or just an inquisitve nature), this may well be the book for you. I personally fall into the category ...

Call Of The Weird Indeed!
Review of The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures - Louis Theroux by ThanksChris

Advantages: Different, interesting read
Disadvantages: See the TV shows first?

...Louis Theroux's TV documentaries (and the man himself) or reading about strange people. Or both! The reason I bought this book was the former but the odd characters are rather interesting in themselves. I always found Louis's interaction with his 'subjects' rather fascinating as he skilfully befriended and questioned people with often, frankly, disturbing views on lifestyle and politics. If you have seen him on TV you will have seen that sometimes ...
...is about Louis's return to the USA to meet some of his 'most intriguing ex-interviewees', as he puts it. The most famous characters featured are Ike Turner (Ex-Mr Tina Turner of course) and April, Lamb and Lynx. The latter stuck in the mind of many when they saw the almost infamous documentary Louis made about the young twin fascists (Lamb and Lynx) brought up by their mother (April) to sing Nazi-themed songs to ultra right-wing rallies. I think ... Read review

Get Your Nose In Someone Else's Business
Review of The Story of the Little Mole Who Knew It Was None of His Business - Werner Holzwarth by melee

Advantages: funny, clever, original
Disadvantages: none

...giggling little audience. The Little Mole came to my attention thanks to my dearly beloved, who for some reason thought it might tickle me. And he was right: even just the title and the concept tickled me, so the next time I found myself in a bookshop with a fiver to spare I ventured into the kiddie section (which was like a journey back in time for me - I used to spend so much time in there begging my Mum to buy me all manner of books - shame the ...
...to locate a copy of the oversized book. I had been imagining something Mr.Men sized, but this is a landscape-A4. Curiosity could not be contained, and I whipped it out as soon as I was on the tube and proceeded to read - complete with giggles, snorts at snuffles at the delightful story, which goes something like this: Our little Hero - The Mole - pokes his head out one morning only to have something or someone deposit a sausage on his head. Horns and Military Dilemmas
Review of The Men Who Stare At Goats - Jon Ronson by JoePoirot

Advantages: Entertaining
Disadvantages: Too quirky

...is a journalist who wrote the brilliantly funny “Them”, subtitled “Adventures With Extremists”, a hilarious account of meetings with various cranks and extremists such as the Ku Klux Klan, David Icke and more. Not forgetting the “Bilderberg” conspiracy postulating that a group of powerful men are running the world (Peter Mandelson apparently attends their meetings!). With this pedigree and such an attention-grabbing name it was impossible to resist ...
...I saw it. The title comes from a secret experiment where military guys tried to stare goats to death. Apparently one goat was taken ill but the chap who succeeded in doing this also ended up with a heart problem. Make of that what you will. Was the goat also trying to harm the guy or did the “energy” rebound from him??? The book is concerned with a manual known as the “First Earth Battalion Manual” written by an ex-Vietnam vet who decided that ... Read review
