Review of Beginning Javascript - Paul Wilton by TheDuke

Advantages: Easy to use and read.
Disadvantages: A hefty book.

...get a helping hand in beginning their quest for JavaScript knowledge. The book is laid out in a straightforward and logical manner, and divided into 16 main chapters and 10 appendices. There are no huge prerequisites as regards previous programming experience, but an understanding of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) in the creation of static (i.e. non-changing) web pages is a must as JavaScript is a language used primarily for adding features to ...
...even a small personal one, with a working knowledge of HTML, and want to move on to something more advanced, then this book is for you. I'll briefly describe each chapter, giving you an outline of what the book is going to teach you. The first chapter is used to introduce you to the concept of JavaScript, along with a description of the format of the lessons, and layout of the book. This is pretty standard fare for a book of this type, but there ... Read review

Review of Java - Walter Savitch by yhwman

Advantages: Covers lots
Disadvantages: Uses a custom class as a short hand

...can use to create your Java programs. I do have to criticisms though. The author has created his own class (A set of instructions) to perform routine tasks such as reading from a file. These may programs easier to write but make the language harder to learn and without a lecturer to point this out to me I may have struggled with it for a bit. You may be wondering why this is a problem. Suppose I wrote a program at home that used his class and then ...
...don’t have his extension so my program wouldn’t work. The other criticism is that the AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit, it creates windows, buttons for you to interact with) isn’t covered in as much detail as it could. I’d still recommend this book however, as I doubt you could find one book for a language that covered everything satisfactorily. ... Read review

Urg Whoops Maybe
Review of JavaScript for the World Wide Web - Tom Negrino, Dori Smith by Manx

Advantages: Internet page. An easy start.
Disadvantages: No real reference value.

There is every reason to believe that the Visual Quickstart Guide “JavaScript for the World Wide Web” is, in its way, a good book. I suppose. I bought the book as someone who can program, well, let me clarify that further, I’m a Computing Science student who tends to sleep during his programming lectures and therefore, to date, I’ve never written any hugely successful C (++) giant programs but I I’m not a novice either. The idea of juggling the ...
...balk at. This book is not written for me. This book is written for the new type of computer “programmer” that the Web has created. The authors have carefully highlighted those people who wouldn’t be programming their own “Goto 10” loop if they didn’t have a web page to design. So, the pages of this book set out to clearly explain from the ground up the premises behind JavaScript, the net and Object Orientated programming. I bought this book (after ... Read review

A great intro to JAVA if you need one
Review of Understanding Object-Oriented Programming with JAVA - Timothy Budd by djhendra

Advantages: clear, easy to read, informative
Disadvantages: only of interest if you're into this sorta stuff

Understanding Object Oriented Programming with JAVA by Timothy Budd is a very approachable book and quite easy to read. It might help if you have a basic understanding of computers, but other than that you can dive straight into this book and it will give a good, consistent, gentle but informative introduction to the world of JAVA programming. I was supplied this bok as part of the Open University's M301 course - Software Systems and Engineering ... Read review

Fortran 90
Review of Fortran 90 Programming - T.M.R. Ellis, Ivor R. Philips by blueonred

Advantages: Good Beginner Book
Disadvantages: Expensive

Fortran is one the oldest programming language around, and one of the most popular in computationally intensive numerical algorithms. Unfortunately, it lacks many features regarded as essential in High-level programming language, although this has been addressed in subsequent revision, from Fortran77 to Fortran90/95 to Fortran 2003. The most popular and widely used version is still Fortran 90/95. Fortran 90 programming by T.M.R. Ellis, Ivor R. Philips ...
...which covers most subjects on Fortran programming. Another book to consider is Fortran 90 / 95 for Scientists and Engineers (which covers Fortran 95 in more detail) With small number of Fortran books available, this also means that they are very difficult for find and expensive to buy compare to C or Java books, I would recommend to borrow this book or using online tutorial papers before deciding to buy. ...
