Great hardware, until it goes wrong
Review of Acer Aspire 1705SMi - P4 3.06 GHz - 17" TFT by
salsacolin
Advantages: Full size comonents, Large Screen, Large HDD
Disadvantages: Acer after sales service
...replacement than a laptop.
Acer has now discontinued this model of laptop so you will only be able to purchase this second hand, now this is where the big problem occurs.
My laptop started to have issues with overheating when Hyper threading was enabled and then the DVD-RW stopped working when burning CD's. The laptop was purchased from new and was about 9 months old. I logged a call with Acer support and to start with was pleasantly surprised ... ...5 day turn around on the repair. 5 days came and went, so did a week, 2 weeks, 3weeks. I chased and got no feedback. I escalated and chased, escalated and chased. After 4 weeks the laptop was returned, it still over heated, the DVD-RW would not even read a disc, the USB ports did not work and there was a crack in the case. Eventually after a total of almost 3 months I received a replacement laptop, as they no longer made this model I received a different ...

Review of Acer Aspire 1714SMi - P4 3.4 GHz - 17" TFT by
davsfavs
Advantages: Powerful, good graphics, large screen, removable battery
Disadvantages: Short battery life, heavy, not really portable
...bits and built it myself. Its more of a moveable desktop than a portable laptop though, and the software it comes with was just Windows XP Home. Acer really spent all the money on hardware.
So if you have software and want an excellent laptop - buy this one! ...

The standard others must now Aspire to
Review of Acer Aspire 3692WLMi - Celeron M 420 1.6 GHz - 15.4" TFT by
Nobby1974
Advantages: Great price, great features and great looks
Disadvantages: It doesn't make coffee
...know, I plumped for an Acer Aspire 3692WLMi Laptop, purchased online through ebuyer (see my review of that website too).
LOOKS
When it arrived the next day, I gleefully unpacked it and began setting it up. It's a good looking little laptop (it looks as good as the Sony Vaio I'd sometimes borrowed from work) and has a decent screen size (it's widescreen). SCREEN
The screen is perhaps a little too reflective - I've tried using outside on a sunny ... ...indoors in normal light it is very good indeed.
EASE OF SET-UP AND USE
The keyboard is also nice to use as it is far enough back to be able to get your wrists flat on the front, rather than perching them on the front edge.
The machine's Wifi connected to our BT homehub in seconds, giving a very strong signal. Which comes to my only gripe: I then had to sit about for over an hour while it downloaded and installed the miriad microsoft updates (it ...

Review of Dell XPS m1330 by
stonecoldkevster
Advantages: Speed
Disadvantages: Crashes sometimes
How do Dell keep doing this, another amazing laptop for people like me to enjoy.
This laptop can have an immensive amount of RAM and Hard Drive put in to it and you can also change colour and pattern to severel differant ones.
Has a security fingerprint check to get in the laptop or/and in laptop files. Now that is technology so if any one steals it they wont be able to get on it!
Also is designed for storing pictures and movies and games and ...

Not a great traveller, but a good mate...
Review of Acer TravelMate 7520-402G16Mi - Turion 64 X2 TL-58 1.9 GHz - 17" TFT by
readie25
Advantages: Well-presented, feature-packed laptop
Disadvantages: A touch slow for modern gaming
The Acer Travelmate series come generally very well-equipped to be competent laptop computers for the modern age, and the 7520 is no exception. Using the same Turion 64x2 that is quite standard in its Travelmate range, the 7520 is quick to boot; the 2GB of RAM is quite sufficient for multimedia applications such as watching DVDs - well provided for by a very able DVD drive and a very nicely presented, clear screen. As well as this, the product is ... ...for long periods, with a great touchpad.
However, the screen is quite easily scratched and the battery life is really rather poor - typically you can expect approximately 80 mins on 'high performance', or longer on the more frugal but less useful 'balanced' and 'power saver' options.
A great value laptop, and a very good buy ...
