From an A level study experience
Review of Alias Grace - Margaret Atwood by
cowgirl_claire
Advantages: the ideas it brings up are very interesting
Disadvantages: can be slow to read
After studying this book for English Literature A level, i felt i could add a few points that haven't been mentioned. We were told to read the book before the start of our course through the summer and i did find it quite slow and the ending somewhat dissapointing. However, if you are willing to go into more depth to discover Atwoods messages through 'Alias Grace', the book becomes something very interesting and different. Atwood writes a story about ... ...murdering her master and his mistress. Throughout the story, readers encounter many different versions of events, including newspaper exerpts from the time of the murders and experts from books. Varying points of view are also presented to show different opinions. This contributes to a fragmented and confused feel. However, this is Atwoods aim in an attempt to recreate the feeling surrounding events at the time, where it seemed getting at the truth ...

Captivating!
Review of Sepulchre - Kate Mosse by
gail666
Advantages: Captivating mix of historical and modern events
Disadvantages: None
A wonderful read with lots of interesting facts and enthralling fiction combined. The atmosphere Kate Mosse captures is magical and takes you into the book and the lives of the main characters. The story is one of sadness, mystery, love, fear and superstition. I love the mix of old and new and how everything integrates the further on you read. Mosse has provided a fictional novel with some wonderful truths regarding Debussy and Parisian life in the ... ...lapses the whole piece is simple and straightforward to read. The history behind the tarot is most captivating, both facts and fiction regarding the cards helps to hold the novel together in many ways. All in all an exciting read that draws your mind and imagination.
A joy to read at anytime. ...

The Post Birthday World
Review of The Post-birthday World - Lionel Shriver by
chcouper
Advantages: Very gripping
Disadvantages: Too much sex and slightly repetitive
...it so when I saw The Post Birthday World in an airport newsagent I decided to buy it. This book has been nominated for quite a few literary awards. The book opens with a quite a typical opening for your typical chick lit novel. We are introduced to the dreary domestic life of our protagonist Irina McGovern, a thirty-something children's book illustrator. Irina is in a long-term (10 year) relationship with Lawrence Trainer which has gone a bit staid. ... ...Every year on Ramsey's birthday the two couples go out for dinner. Over the years Jude and Ramsey's relationship breaks down but Irina and Lawrence continue the tradition of the annual dinner with Ramsey. Then one year on Ramsey's birthday, Lawrence is away with work and Irina and Ramsey end up going out for dinner just the two of them. After dinner Ramsey asks Irina back to his place and after smoking some cannabis and drinking a lot of alcohol ...

Funny and Entertaining a fantastic story
Review of The Old-girl Network - Catherine Alliott by
Mistyang
Advantages: Brilliant storyline so funny you wonder what Polly will do next
Disadvantages: None for me at all
This was the first ever Catherine Alliott book I ever read when it first came out. I have read all her others but none have entertained me as much as the antics of Polly. She is such a scatterbrain and will have you in stitches with her antics. When I first read this I bought it as bedtime reading however with Polly sending me into hyseterics sleep was impossible as I could not get her antics out of my head and was giggling for hours. I have also ... ...those who have not read the book before. And if you are looking for something to read then go for this - its worth it. You cannot put the book down or stop listening if its the audio version, you can hardly wait to see whatever Polly is going to do next....she is just so hilariously loveable. ...

Simply Wicked.
Review of The Wicked Sex - Lance Porter by
VickyVickster
Advantages: Well written, great characters, clever stories,
Disadvantages: only for Femdom fans as quite extreme in parts.
...baptism of fire. One of the branches of my published erotic romance writing is reviewing. I review erotic romance and erotica for the Erotic Readers and Writers Association under my pen name 'Victoria Blisse' and on occasion other books for other sites and reasons. This is one of those classified as 'other'. This is an Erotica book, so if that's not your thing I won't be heart broken if you back click now. When you read about BDSM and especially ... ...submissive. It seems to be the 'norm' in this section of kinky behaviour, it's as if it is much more expected and tolerated. 'The Wicked Sex' shows the other side of the coin. But not just that, it gives an interesting literate twist to each of its six short Femdom stories. Femdom, for those not in the know is a blend two words 'female' and 'domination' and is, as you might guess, instances where the lady is in charge. This is a growing genre and ...
