44 Scotland Street
Review of 44 Scotland Street - Alexander McCall Smith by
grannyjan
Advantages: Fun, easy to read chapters
Disadvantages: Cant put it down,
...another of his books. 44 Scotland street had humour, poignancy and deep philosophical issues.
My poor husband kept getting woken up as I shook with laughter at the various adventures - what else can you do when you read lines such as 'what did it matter if you had no underpants'?
The format, having been adapted from a newspaper serialisation meant that each chapter was complete in itself, and yet still had you eager to find out what happened next.
... ...and Matthew. What had happened to Pat in her gap year - sorry, in her first gap year? Thsi book starts in her 2bd Gap year. As for Matthew, he seems to be the original useless rich boy - he has had several failed businesses funded by his father. Will the gallery be a success? ...

Is This Love or Just Oxytocin?
Review of A Certain Chemistry - Mil Millington by
kerryking
Advantages: Long Awaited Second Novel from Mil
Disadvantages: I'm not sure about the narration by the "God" character
Tom Cartwright is a ghost writer, ever prepared to "become" the person his agent, the utterly bonkers and maddeningly frank, Amy, asks him to be. So when Tom is offered the fiscally advantageous task of ghosting the autobiography of the sensational young actress, Georgina Nye, gorgeous starlet from the hit soap The Firth, Tom and Sara, his girlfriend of five years, can hardly believe their luck - Tom is about to make ten years' salary in one fell ... ...be "just another book, albeit a lucrative one", and that Georgina Nye is going to be "some tedious "C" lister", he quickly finds himself confronted with the reality that Georgina Nye is a force of nature and he is attracted to her beyond all reason and any of his wildest dreams, ever!
How could this have happened, he asks himself as he stands in the face of an overwhelming explosion of chemistry. He loves Sara; a woman with whom he has five years ...

A riveting read.
Review of A Lesser Evil - Lesley Pearse by
shellannjo
Advantages: Hard to put down and great value for money.
Disadvantages: You don't want it to end!
...back to the 1960's, with a tale about two young people who fall in love (Fifi and Dan). There is tension in the family as they think that Dan is no good. The couple get married in secret and go to London where Dan can find work. They move into a street called Dale Street, which is a far cry from the world that Fifi is familiar with. Deciding to make the best of it, Fifi sets about trying to work out who her neighbours are, and spends many hours watching ... ...a widower with a secret he's being blackmailed with; Nora, a woman who generally keeps herself to herself, but develops a soft spot for the newly married couple. She is not as she appears though. There is also Yvette, a dress maker from France, who has a very sad background and dark secret. She lives next door to the Muckle famly, who are dirty, noisy and dangerous. They neglect their children, have drunken fights and are hated and feared by all ...

Suicide or cake?
Review of A Long Way Down - Nick Hornby by
ryanando
Advantages: Very funny, Very observant book.
Disadvantages: The narrative can get a tad grating at points.
Nothing like a good old taboo to get the juices flowing.
Mr Hornby (first name Nick) is one of the more observant writers I know of. Yeah ok, so I'm not the most well read person in the world so there are probably others who make him seem like he goes around with blinkers on, but he always manages to hit the nail on the head with the people he creates. Another talent of his is not really having a point to his stories and all at the same time having ... ...Martin, who is well educated, a tad famous and a bit of an arsehole (his words, not mine). His narration is possibly the easiest to stomach as it tends to be written more as a writer would narrate a story. Real words, proper punctuation, intellectual comments.
Maureen is next to arrive on the scene. She is a lot quieter, far too easily impressed by anything and tends to be a little bit of a prude. She's also rather god-fearing to boot. I found her ...

A Spot of Bother
Review of A Spot of Bother - Mark Haddon by
stephie_b
Advantages: short chapters, addictive storyline
Disadvantages: can be jumpy at times, not the best book to put down
...good as eachother! It's a story about a family that has it's ups and downs like any other....
This book can be read by anyone! The characters maybe ordinary but isn't that what we all are? It makes you understand that we really don't know what goes on behind closed doors! There are lots of little secrets in this family and Haddon has managed to turn what could be a very plain story into a comedy.
The basis of the story is on the whole family which ... ...deal with a marriage that the dad George isn't happy about, a homosexual son, difficult relationships, illness and coming to terms with getting old. The chapters are very small and changes from character to character frequently building up the thoughts and feelings off all family members.
I really felt sorry for George in the novel, you can understand that he is worried about getting old and the thought of death which must cross everyones mind at ...
