Fred's verse for a charity nurse.
Review of Tell It Ageern Fred - Fred Pass by plod591

Advantages: Funny and all for a worthwhile cause.
Disadvantages: Too short !!!!

I have pondered long and hard about this review and found it quite taxing and emotional, as will be seen in my final paragraph of this review, however, I have decided to take the plunge and my choice of title is to cover all aspects of the content of the review. For those who are aware of this author, I ask for your indulgence in order that those who do not may be enlightened. Thank you. THE AUTHOR. The late Fred Pass was an ordinary working man, ...
...hidden for what, in my opinion, was far too many years. Born in the 1940's, he left school at 15 and spent the 40 years as a scrap yard worker. He would often compose poems which he would relate to people and somehow approached and persuaded to publish them in aid of St. Luke's Hospice charity in his home city of Sheffield. Thus began his short literary 'career '. Two booklets of the poems he wrote were subsequently published and both sold out. ... Read review

I believe in fairies!

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

Where are the fairies? Where can we find them? We've seen the fairy rings, They leave behind them! When they have danced all night, Where do they go? Lark, in the sky above, Sat, do you know? Is it a secret No one is telling? Why, in your garden Surely they're dwelling! No need for journeying, Seeking afar: Where there are flowers, There fairies are. However, if looking around your garden seems like too much trouble, you can find a wonderful selection ...
...seven books in the flower fairy series, but in 1982 the publishers decided to publish an eighth, Flower fairies of the winter, so that there would be one for each season. As well as being available in this compilation edition, they are all still available as separate books. The seven books included in this wonderful and captivating book are: flower fairies of the Spring, Flower fairies of the summer, Flower fairies of the Autumn, Flower fairies of ... Read review

No-one ever reads it - sound familiar?
Review of The Complete Stories of Dorothy Parker - Dorothy Parker by Caro_R

Advantages: Concise, honest style of writing, modern themes
Disadvantages: Difficult to get hold of the book because not many people are familiar with the author

...Dictionary of Quotations flinging around the kind of acidic, perfectly timed and devastatingly clever insults that everyone else wishes they could think of. The sum total of her writings is not great considering that in spite of suicide attempts she lived for over 70 years, but it is neverthless surprising that they are not better known and admired. Her poems show the same concise wit and originality as the epigrams for which she is famous, while ...
...sometimes duologues and sometimes omnisciently narrated, the stories use an honest simplicity of language to reflect the poignancy, isolation and brutality of life. In my opinion, Dorothy Parker is one of the best writers of the 20th century and it is a shame that she is not more widely read. ... Read review

Wild about Wilde
Review of The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde - Oscar Wilde by Telute

Advantages: Everything Oscar Wilde has written
Disadvantages: Cheap and tacky book won't last long

...has its flaws. Firstly the book is bulky and probably won't last long if your an avid reader. The print is small and the paper cheap. A true fan of wilde would probably be better off spending money on a decent edition of his works or buying their favourite pieces seperatly. That said the content of this collection is superb. It includes all the well-known pieces adn much that is less well-known but no less readable. Some of the early poetry is not ...
...know little about wilde. The intor is servicable but nothing special and is worth reading as an overview. Wildes works thought are welll worth reading. His plays are funny and perceptive commidies about victorian manners and society. His childrens stories are evocative fairy tales. The classic Dorian Grey is probably one of the best works of fiction produced in this era. To accompany all this there are the poems. The ballad of Reading Gaol stands ... Read review

The Less Deceived
Review of The Less Deceived - Philip Larkin by mommagee

Advantages: Wonderful thought provoling, bleak yet humorous
Disadvantages: A little too melancholic perhaps?

...Larkin's style, wit and even the bleak nature of much of this work. As an angst ridden teenager the poems seemed to speak directly to me. The title poem made me want to scream at the realisation that in Victorian society a woman 'defiled' by a man would be deemed damaged goods and unlikely to mary; oh the unfairness! And yet the perpetrator was himself 'more deceived' by his act. I was inspired to write to Larkin and received a lovely reply to my ... Read review
