The black shadow of Crow will haunt you.
Review of Crow (From the Life and Songs of the Crow) - Ted Hughes by
drewish
Advantages: Intensely profound and thought provoking poetry.
Disadvantages: Dark and gloomy.
...From Crow's Theology:
Crow realized God loved him-
Otherwise, he would have dropped dead. So that was proved. Crow reclined, marvelling, on his heart-beat. . . . And what loved the shot-pellets
That dribbled from those strung-up mummifying crows? What spoke the silence of lead? Crow realized there were two Gods-
One of them much bigger than the other
Loving his enemies
And having all the weapons. Here the central contradiction in the poems ... ...mercy of the world.
Crow is unforgiving and selfish, a creature who delights in what he can do, without regard for others:
Crow and Mama
When Crow cried his mother's ear Scorched to a stump. When he laughed she wept Blood her breasts her palms her brow all wept blood. He tried a step, then a step, and again a step - Every one scarred her face for ever. When he burst out in rage She fell back with an awful gash and a fearful cry. When Crow cried ...

Travellers' Tales
Review of Canterbury Tales - Geoffrey Chaucer by
frkurt
Advantages: A true classic of the English language
Disadvantages: In Middle English without translation, it can be difficult to read
In Chaucer's work, 'The Canterbury Tales', perhaps the greatest of English literary works from the period of the language known as Middle English, there is one particular piece that have always stood out for me.
'A Clerk ther was of Oxenford also,'
This is perhaps my favourite character, as when I first read it, it seemed to epitomise what I hoped for in my own life.
'That unto logik hadde longe y-go.
....
For him was lever have at his beddes ... ...to his magnus opus, 'The Canterbury Tales', a collection of stories with prologue told by pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury (car radios and in-flight movies were rare in those days), Chaucer wrote minor poems to suit various occasions (his first record as poet comes from having written a poem as elegy on the death of John of Gaunt's first wife, Blanche, in 1369), and the major work for which he was noted for 'Troilus and Criseyde', which showed ...

Yeats - The Early Irish Voice
Review of Collected Poems - W.B. Yeats by
baggyman
Advantages: Accessibilty
Disadvantages: Who's heard of him?
In Collected Poems Augustine Martin has compiled an extensive piece of Irish Literary history. Not only does this capture the young romantic poet, before his more political voice matures, in the collection from Crossways(1889) and The Rose(1893) but also his finest piece of works in The Wild Swans at Coole(1919)and Michael Robarts and the Dancer(1921). The latter two collections are worth the £8.99 alone in terms of quality and social history.
I ... ...but unfortunately they capture the period in which he borrowed heavily from the mysticism and verbal intrigue of William Blake's work, as well as from Doone. His earlier pieces have highlights, such as the Isle of Innisfree but in no way classify Yeats as a writer of his time. Each of his works are in comparison with later writers such as Betjeman, in as much that they both are immensely skilled in using the most simplest forms of poetics, rhyme ...

We all have our off-days
Review of Can I Come Down Now, Dad? - John Hegley by
theediscerning
Advantages: The world's best poet?
Disadvantages: Not up to his regular form
...enjoyable poets on the database, Can I Come Down Now, Dad? is probably the worst one he’s written. (Although, note ~ theediscerning hasn’t caught up with the last one or two yet.)
That isn't to say it isn't a very decent read, for it is. It's just that here the brilliant wordplay and forceful rhythms take a back-seat, for what the back cover calls "pathos".
Well, perhaps suppose it was a sign of Mr Hegley maturing a bit, or certainly branching ... ...Hegley recite his work you can immediately pick up any of his pieces and hear him say it in his unique style in your head. Here, though, the way he commonly forces the rhymes and metre together in constantly humorous clashes, is much reduced.
Theediscerning is always loathe to give quotes as examples, for two reasons ~ most poems are so short he would have to copy the whole poem, and Mr Hegley might not be too happy, and two, the original op didn’t ...
