Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
Review of The Nation's Favourite Poems - Griff Rhys Jones by Thehonesttruth

Advantages: Something for every poetical taste
Disadvantages: You wont like every poem.

...two types of books. There's the kind you make time for - a pot of strong hot tea, a blanket, and a prime spot on the sofa with your feet curled under you. And then there's the other kind - books that are so meaningful that you can't just read through them, but rather have to read a little at a time, and then sit back and digest the words, sounding them out in your head and putting your own meaning to them. Poetry books fall into the second category, ...
...are the books that cover my bathroom windowsill, the books I grab for when I'm sitting in the bath and don't have much time to read, or (rather disgustingly, I know) read when I'm sitting on the toilet! I think probably most people have a favourite poem of some kind, be it something inspirational, such as Rudyard Kipling's 'If', something that helps you through hard times, or even just a silly limerick that makes you giggle. So, as both a writer ... Read review

WARNING
Review of Selected Poems - Jenny Joseph by caneal

Advantages: A heartwarming look at old age
Disadvantages: Absolutely none!

Oh, how I love this poem! When I am old I am going to aspire to its' every detail! Jenny Joseph wrote this poem in 1961 and it was voted Britain's favourite poem in 1996. It is written from the point of view of a middle-aged woman who yearns to throw off the cloak of respectability in her old age. For now, she must live the life of expected sobriety but, when she reaches old age she is determined to let respectability fly to the wind! There is ...
...everybody can relate to, some more than others maybe, but the connection will be there all the same. To quote just a couple of lines to give you the feeling of the theme: ....and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings.... The good thing about old age is that nobody cares so much about what you look like or what you do. You can get away with most things and all people will do is call you eccentric! ... Read review

Elizabeth Jennings
Review of Collected Poems - Elizabeth Jennings by fizzingwhizbee0

Advantages: A fine poet who ... manages to build the richest of poems from the barest of methods
Disadvantages: May be boring for younger readers.

All of her poems definately have an emotional attachment in some way to something whthin both the readed and probably Jennings herself. I have studied some of her poems and i find them very interesting to read, they convey something of a deeper meaning. My Grandmother She kept an antique shop – or it kept her.... And I remember how I once refused To go out with her, since I was afraid. It was perhaps a wish not to be used Like antique objects. ...
...I felt no grief at all, ...guilt of what I once refused. ...walked into her room things she never used But needed... This poem in particular makes you reflect on how you treat others, also that every day should be made the most of - nothing lasts for ever. From reading this poem in particular i have tried to pay more attention to other people, in particular, my Gran, old people can often seem "in the way" their old fashioned ways can become ... The first Mrs Rochester
Review of Wide Sargasso Sea (Penguin Modern Classics) - Jean Rhys by ring_of_roses

Advantages: Excellent, engaging story
Disadvantages: Sometimes challenging, hard to understand if you haven't read Jane Eyre

...read previously and loved), and Wide Sargasso Sea. I felt uneasy about "add ons" to books. For one thing, it was not written by Charlotte Bronte, so I felt this was just ripping off her idea to make money. How wrong I was. Despite being billed as a prequel to Jane Eyre, I would read Bronte's novel first as otherwise the events and characters in WSS may seem irrelevant and confusing. This book costs £5.99 - £8.99 depending on edition. PLOT The novel ...
...Creole girl - meaning that she is born in the Caribbean but is white. The first part describes Antoinette childhood and pre-Rochester years.
