Advantages: Interesting concept behind the plot
Disadvantages: Slow paced

Author: George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright born in 1856, and who died in 1950. Although he write music as well, he most enjoying writng plays, with the prupose of putting across a social message, and making it more memorable with the use of comedy, whilst doing so. Some of his plays addressed the issue of education, religion and government, however one topic he often considered was the exploitation of the working class. As a socialist, ...
...a British socialist movement, writing brochures and leaflets for them. He even married a fellow member of the Society, called Charlotte Payne-Townshend. Lord of the Ring Road
Review of London Orbital - Iain Sinclair by Silverback

Advantages: Breathtakingly virtuosic and knowledgeable writing
Disadvantages: Can become rather obscure at times

Towards the end of London Orbital, Iain Sinclair concludes “The M25 goes nowhere; it’s self-referential, postmodern, ironic. Modestly corrupt, it won’t make sense until it’s been abandoned, grown over.” And there was I thinking it was just a road. That quote, though, hints at the layer upon layer of symbolism, history, politics and art that Iain Sinclair creates and discovers in this furious, fascinating, multifaceted book. What starts as a walk ...
...poet, novelist, chronicler of unseen London – embarked on a series of one-day walks. Starting in September 1998, and ending up on Millennium Eve 1999, he worked his way up the Lea Valley and then methodically anticlockwise round the orbital motorway from Waltham Abbey in Essex. This book is his account of that vast circuit. Does it sound boring? It’s anything but. Because Sinclair brings to the walk a wealth of knowledge, research and just a little ... Read review

Review of The Poetry of Michaelangelo: An Annotated Translation - James M. Saslow by frkurt

Advantages: Artful, a good dual-language edition
Disadvantages: -

...Michelangelo's poetry was one of the books we used, as it gave us the opportunity to explore different aspects at the same time. How would someone whose creative genius in some media (painting, sculpture, architecture) made him an immortal in history translate onto the written page? Would Michelangelo's sexual orientation, always a topic of debate based upon various images in paint and stone, as well as personal stories and correspondence, be more ...
...to falsehoods, for in truth, the liar's the one who doesn't believe. James Saslow presents a truly excellent volume of Michelangelo's poetry - 302 completed poems, and an appendix of 41 fragments (some as brief as one line), formatted in dual language, Italian and English. The translations are verse translations, rather than literal, word-for-word renderings, but the annotations are very detailed, so as to explore the nuances and meanings perhaps ... Read review

The first Mrs Rochester
Review of Wide Sargasso Sea (Penguin Modern Classics) - Jean Rhys by ring_of_roses

Advantages: Excellent, engaging story
Disadvantages: Sometimes challenging, hard to understand if you haven't read Jane Eyre

...read previously and loved), and Wide Sargasso Sea. I felt uneasy about "add ons" to books. For one thing, it was not written by Charlotte Bronte, so I felt this was just ripping off her idea to make money. How wrong I was. Despite being billed as a prequel to Jane Eyre, I would read Bronte's novel first as otherwise the events and characters in WSS may seem irrelevant and confusing. This book costs £5.99 - £8.99 depending on edition. PLOT The novel ...

Her mother, Annette, remarries Mr Mason (thus changing Antoinette's name) but sadly is driven to madness when her ill son dies and her house is burned down. In the second part, reader, she marries ... Read review
