Advantages Advantages Style, passion, performance and it's Gran Turismo 4. Great value second hand

Disadvantages Disadvantages Build quality, fuel consumption, re-sale value

When it comes to cars, I am unashamedly shallow. I will always go for bhp over boot space, roar over reliability. My Alfa 156 2.5 V6 had bhp, and it certainly had roar. I have never driven a car so exciting. The story of my 156 is short, beautiful and tragic. I bought it second hand for £3,500 and it had 70,000 miles on the clock. This was back in 2006 and these wonderful cars still present great second hand investments (the depreciation with all Alfa Romeos is astonishing). Considering the 156 was the third car I had ever bought, and it was insurance group 15, it was the fastest, most ... more

Advantages Advantages Simply an awesome car and driving experience.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The running costs will put some people off owning one.

Over the years since first passing my driving test, I have had dozens of cars and since I turned 21 and could get insurance for them most of them have been sports cars of one type or another. I have owned two convertible BMW`s a VW Golf VR6 and several Alfa Romeo`s, with the Alfa Romeos being my favourite cars by a mile. The Alfa Romeo I am Writing about today is the 156, 2.5 V6 24 valve, I have just sold this particular car on in order to buy the newer model of Alfa Romeo but I am missing it badly. Even though the new Alfa is breathtakingly good it just does not seem to have the character and ... more

Girls sit back, guys boy are you in for a ride, Walking up to the car a silver Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 V6 24v, you look at the back site and the tail light stare at you, through a narrow gap and you wonder…… Those standard looking rims and tyres, hood with a little V-Shaped grill and the AFLA badge on the front of the hood, it looks like Alfa is bragging about something, and boy they can brag about this one. Personally the cars looks aren't the most attractive in the field, but that's just me, the sound of the car when it's idling sounds like a normal 2.0 it idles smooth and calm. Inside the ... more

    5 Stars Quick review of Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 by pag1ele 23/05/2008
Fast, reliable and fun. The Veloce model that I have is particularly grippy but also a little nervous particularly at speed through bumpy corners. Well recommended though.

5 Stars Quick review of Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 by soonvg 22/04/2008
The engine. The engine is a 2.5 Litre V6 and loves to rev. When it does rev, the sound it makes is so sexy, so smooth and so addictive, you just can't get enough of it. It is one of the great experiences of life and once you have heard it and driven it, you will forever be smitten. With nearly 200 bhp, it is very powerful and provides excellent flexibility all through the rev range. I have heard reports that the engine lacked low end torque but I can tell you that is simply not the case. There is a ... more

Advantages Advantages The engine will seduce you

Disadvantages Disadvantages The fuel consumption will kill your wallet but hey, who cares?

This is a car built for drivers who love their art. The driving experience is dominated by the engine and gearbox and also the ride which can be a little on the harsh side. Reliability, especially on the electrical systems is suspect and you simply must get the car serviced every 6000 miles and the cam belt changed every 35000 miles. If you don't, a new engine is the order of the day and at around £3500 fitted, it isn't cheap. The engine. The engine is a 2.5 Litre V6 and loves to rev. Own a red Alfa 156 2.5 V6. One of the best cars I have driven in a very long time. It feels very sharp and planted all round from the suspension to the gearbox. The 6 speed manual is fantsatic Great when you want to cruise on the motorway in sixth and plenty of grunt in the lower gears. Comfortable over long journeys. I ahve had to reliabilty problems except someone keying it in a car park! When they do go wrong though they can be very expensive. Many garages will refuse to work on them so need to make sure if you use a regular garage they will do any work for you. A new clutch is £173 before ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty of power, styling, sharp steering, great sounding engine

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor ride quality, big turning circle, hard to park because of high back

Ok just bought a second car. And thought that the Alfa 156 would be a good buy. Its a 2.5ltr version on a 99 reg paid just over £3k for it. The stylings cool as with the interior very retro and feels like your in a tie fighter from starwars ( mines tanned momo leather on black with wood trimming ). The engine sounds amazing lots of throaty sound. Makes you feel like Darth Vadar. I now like driving in tunnels with the windows down. The steering is precise but does feel very heavy at the front. The air con isn't that powerful and does use up alot of extra fuel. The biggest let down is the ride ... more

I love the Alfa V6 I've a few (GTV6 x2, 75 )and this is the best so far. I have to use awful roads in the North of Scotland and the V6 is great for overtaking. Mine is black and in standard form except for nice Alfa alloys. I think that this is the cars best form. It has passer bys admiring it and the noise instantly tells people that it is powerful. 6 speed manual box is very easy to use. Great fun coming up behind t-spark owners and flying past them smiling and thinking to myself "they should have paid the extra and got a real engine". Only problem I've had is the driver door hinge broke ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages depreciaiton, dealerships

I bought my Alfa 156 in 2001. This is the second one I have, my first being, a 156 1.8 TS, which I bought new back in 1999. I have nothing but praise for this car. Despite the preconceived opinion, I have never experienced bad reliability problems on either of them. If you are looking for Germanic build quality, then buy a 3 series, (like every one else). Sure the 156 has the typical squeaks and rattles, but hey its Italian! and they only add to the quirkiness. Anyway once you lift the bonnet, you see what sets an Alfa apart. As Jeremy Clarkson recently said “That’s not an engine that’s a ... more
