Advantages Advantages cashback... if the card ever works that is!

Disadvantages Disadvantages poor customer service, strange security measures, annual fee

I only used my platinum amex twice before it stopped working. I rang Amex and they said my account was "under review" and wouldnt say why, but that their credit dept would contact me "in a few days" A week later I was sent a letter in a messy handwritten envelope, addressed to another customer telling them to ring the Brighton office I was suspicious of the letter and rang Amex ... but they confirmed they sent the letter and it must have been a backroom error. Now its two weeks later and the credit department still haven't rang me, I've not had a corrected letter, and they've just charged me ... more

Advantages Advantages Customer services, cashback bonus

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not acceped everywhere, high APR if you carry a balance

There seem to be a lot of American Express Products under this category so I'll clarify which one I am reviewing: The Platinum Credit Card with Cashback. It's a very nice-looking card with a kind of hologram type effect over the whole of the front. There's not really an image as such, just a rainbow effect if the light catches it at the right angle. For any physicist-types out there, I'd say it's probably just a diffraction grating :) Pluses: Customer Services refunded a double payment overnight when my bank messed up the direct debit and wouldn't help - meant I could still afford the finer ... more

    1 Star Centurion Card 21/10/2008
    User doesn't recommend the product

Advantages Advantages Travel insurance, Priority Pass

Disadvantages Disadvantages The above for a lot less money and lack of acceptance

As an American Express card holder since '91 it was with heavy heart that I cancelled my membership. The Centurion card (a £650 per year, by invitation only, charge card) must represent the worst value for money amongst all the different cards on the market, black or otherwise. Even the staff at Amex agree that Platinum, in reality, is every bit as good as the Centurion but less than half the price. When I explained my various disappointments with the whole Centurion experience the response I got frankly begged belief. Little or no interest in retaining my membership. I politely told them what ... more

    Advantages Advantages nothing

    Disadvantages Disadvantages everything

I got my card stolen 2 month ago and report the missing card as soon as I notice the lost card. When I called amex to report the card I ask them what was my last transaction everything was fine no fraud was on the card. One month after this event I receive my bill and found over 2000$ of fraud on the card. Amex open an investigation and collect all fraud receipt from stores involve. Since the signature on the receipt are close to mine they wont pay. I thought I had a protection against fraud with this card I try to speak to a supervisor sent letters no answer from them. Its bean month and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Incredible Customer Service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not one as yet!!

I'd recommend American Express as a brand fully and completely. I recently had a problem where I was a virus protection company incorrect billed my AmEx. I could not get hold of the company and was fuming, I fell overdue on payment and was called by the over due Team. I spoke with a manager 'Emma' THERE AND THEN!!! and she was brilliant - tirelessly chasing contact numbers for the anti-virus, e-mailing me the details, disputing the charges her end and calling me bi-daily to keep me updated. When 'Emma' went on holiday she arranged for another manager 'Patrick' (also brilliant) to update me ... more

Advantages Advantages must be paid in full each month, free insurance policies, global recognition, American Express Selects

Disadvantages Disadvantages limited acceptance, annual fee, additional annual fee for rewards program

Since 1960s, the American Express card has been the preferred methods of payment for travel and entertainment expenses. The card is regarded as a status symbol by many as it indicates the cardmembers' purchasing power (and ability to pay back their bills in full + on time). Card acceptance varies from place to place, most high street retailers, supermarkets, chain hotels, car rental agencies, airlines and gourmet restaurants will honour the card. Smaller establishments are unlikely to take the card as it incurs them higher fee.One of the traditional feature the card still retains is that its ... more

Advantages Advantages Upgrades & welcome all over the world

Disadvantages Disadvantages Costs some money upfront

There is another review on this site that seems to give most of the pertinent details about the Amex black card (Centurion). I'll just add to that. The point is that you must be invited, rather than apply. How do you get invited? Well, get a Platinum Charge card (not the Platinum Credit card). Use it a lot, and I mean spend lots & lots of money. Never, ever, ever fail to pay the balance. Maybe (but I don't know this for sure) have a really spectacular job title. Would you want the card if offered? This is worth thinking about. If you travel a lot, yes. If you don't, maybe no. The best of stuff ... more

Advantages Advantages Free Worldwide Family Travel Insurance

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unjustifiably Expensive Annual Fee

The American Express Platinum charge card is no longer "invitation only", but is it worth the £275 a year annual fee? When i was first upgraded from a gold card, the platinum fee was just under £200 a year. If you travel a few times a year and take at least one family holiday, then this fee was worth the cards unique travel benefits. Along with the usual consumer protection benefits the cardholder receives: 1. Free worldwide travel insurance for their spouse, dependant children and themselves. This benefit is worth around £100 on its own, particularily if you holiday more than once a year. 2 ... more

    Advantages Advantages Nice soothing colour

Disadvantages Disadvantages You risk ending up in debt

First of all, I admit I'm totally against credit cards, as I suffer from over-spending at the best of times. So the reason I briefly owned an Amex is that I got a job with a corporation for a few months; they were closing most of their call centres in Europe, so I had to travel to them to learn more about the job. By the way, believe me, business travel is REALLY boring...All it involved was overtime, stays in anonymous hotels in the periphery of cities, with no where to go out at night. The one good thing was the paid expenses, meaning lots of good food..That's where the Amex comes in: I was ... more

    Advantages Advantages er, prestige?

Disadvantages Disadvantages High annual fee, not accepted in lots of places

About two years ago I received a letter from American Express inviting me to apply for their Green Card. If I did, they wouldn't charge the annual fee for the first year. I already had a Blue card (don't often use it, though) and was quite happy with it, so I applied for the Green and was accepted. First, the good points. The application was accepted quickly and the card arrived. It's a nice looking card! A kind of transparant green. I will be honest and say that I felt quite privileged to carry it. I made my first purchase without any problems, a DVD Player from Richer Sounds. They accepted ... more
