Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost, restricted choice of doctors, fee shortfalls

BUPA have hardly increased their allowances towards surgery and anaesthetic fees over 20 years. To make matters worse is that they have recently (April 2012) cut their benefits for a huge range of surgical procedures This means that the patient must be prepared for huge cost shortfalls in order to see their consultant of choice (and that of their GP) The alternative is to be directed to see specialists of BUPA's choice who have accepted low fees in order to be sent the patients (they could be generalists rather than sub specialists, new consultants rather than experienced doctors, semi-retired ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not value for money

We have held a family BUPA health insurance for the last 10 years, but in light of recent developments, I am about to make a move away from this insurer for the following reasons: 1. Our health insurance premiums rise each year by an amount that massively outstrips inflation. Okay, I realise that as we age, we become a greater health risk to insure, but I feel that the increases go beyond this. 2. BUPA have recently claimed that the cost of providing cover is increasing. They claim that they need to curb costs. They are doing this in the following way: Introducing an "open referral" system ... more

Advantages Advantages There is nothing good to say about BUPA

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Very Poor company

I want to let people know how BUPA did treat us. My family and me live in Thailand and were going on holiday to Norway and bought a worldwide travel health insurance with BUPA Thailand as we have done before. The times we have used them before we did not need to claim anything so we thought we were going to be safe using them again. What happened this time when we were on holiday was that my wife got a strong toothache and severe pain after one week on our holiday. And we had to go to the to the dentist, the dentists said that this was not a hole in the tooth or that there was a question about ... more

    Advantages Advantages Speed of treatment

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost I guess

Many years ago when I lived in London a friend suffered a nasty double fracture of their leg, not exactly life threatening but not exactly pain free and as a result then ended up in a London hospital, when I went to visit I was shocked to find that they had spent the first eight hours of their stay on a trolley in a corridor, now it was a Saturday night and very busy but the care they got over the next couple of days was not exactly great either, that Monday I returned to work and signed up for the companies BUPA policy which was at a 50% reduced rate and I have been a customer off and on ever ... more

Advantages Advantages Super Quick Service, Great Facilities

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive

I have always been very skeptical of private health care policies and Bupa is probably about as big as they come in the sense of customers and facilities available for their customers. Everyone who works in this country pays their stamp and therefore pays for NHS treatment should you need it but the reality of it in the real world is that although if you are in urgent and life threatening need of treatment you will get it but otherwise you could be waiting years. I have always thought right up until 3 years ago that the good old NHS will look after me I pay my taxes for it and I sure as hell ... more

Advantages Advantages Generally friendly and quite efficient

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shortfalls, based in a call centre

I work for a private practice in London and it is my job to liaise with insurance companies to determine whether our patients are covered for various procedures, consultations and operations. I also deal with the undesirable phenomenon known as "shortfalling" which I will explain later. Having spoken to BUPA and other insurance companies on a daily basis for the last six months, I would like to share my knowledge and experience of BUPA. GETTING THROUGH ----------------------------- I am not a policyholder of BUPA's and only call the claims helpline. This is LO-CALL number: 0845-7553333 based ... more

Advantages Advantages Quick Private Medical Treatment

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost can be onerous

I have been a member of BUPAfor many years and, unfortunately, have had to use them a few times. Now I am well awarethat many of you willwax lyrical about ethics. You know the stuff - the NHS should be good enough to provide for all and it is unfair that the rich get preferential treatment etc... all good stuff until your company gives it to you for free. Then 90% + of people's ethics are quickly forgotten. At this point all such dreamers will have given up reading this op and will be moving back to the new Harry Potter book. Price wise bupa are certainly not the cheapest. Whilst I don't pay ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive and limited

In a very few industries you get one organisation which becomes to all intents and purposes synonymous with the product involved such that the name of that organisation comes to mean the same thing as the product, entrenched in people's minds as the product. Hoover is the most obvious example, being shorthand for the vacuum cleaner. Another example is BUPA, where for many people the word means private medical insurance (PMI) and there is nobody else involved. Usually, the organisation gets to be that way because of high product quality, exceptional customer service or simply being the best at ... more

    Advantages Advantages private health care

    Disadvantages Disadvantages premiums too high

As firm supporters of private health care and BUPA members for many years, my husband and I cancelled our subscription in protest at huge premium increases. Although we were lucky enough to not make a claim, our premiums continued to rise steadily each year. We now invest the monthly amount we used to pay BUPA in ISAs and Tessas. Our money is earning interest, and we know it is there if we need to pay for private health treatment. Most private hospitals offer fixed-price treatment, so there are no hidden extras or nasty surprises when the bill arrives. Many also can arrange interest free/low ... more

Advantages Advantages peace of mind. treatment when you need it.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I joined a Bupa scheme several months ago with a special package that was attatched to my salary. As with all insurance I did not expect to have to use it. However my husband became ill and had to visit our GP. The GP advised he would have to go back to hospital as he had a re-occurrance of an old illness. He was advised that the necessary forms would be sent to our local NHS hospital and he would hear in due course. Not happy at having to wait I contacted my insurance who advised me that my husband was covered by my insurance and that he should telephone the consultant at our local BUPA ... more
