    When me and my boyfriend moved into our first home together earlier in the year we decided to take out the British Gas homecare - thank God! We decided on the homecare 400 bundle which covers the heating, boiler, plumbing and home electrics and this is £17.00 per month - we pay by direct debit. Last month the heating started acting quite weird. It would go really hot and wouldn't turn off and then it wouldn't turn on at all.     Just had the engineer in today to do the annual boiler check. Boiler was absolutely fine before today, but whatever the guy has done, there's now water leaking from underneath the machine. Phoned them to complaint and expected them to send someone out straight away (i.e. tonight!) to fix it. No chance - earliest appointment tomorrow afternoon, so I'll have to take more time off work... I'm telling you, if my local plumber had checked the boiler and this had happened, he would be on our doorstep again within no time. Not impressed scottish gas!     I recently signed up for the British Gas Homecare. I arranged what I thought was the first service but then kept getting reminders to ring them to sort out a date. After receiving a further reminder I decided to give them a call as they were now saying that if there was a fault and the first service had not been done they would make a charge! Anyway, they point blank refuse to accept that an engineer has done the first service even though they can see someone attended. We've rearranged but are watching them closely.     Paid over £33 per month for Homecare 400 ( i.e. the full service for central Heating, plumbing etc. ) Boiler packed up. 6 visits and a total over over 16 hours waiting in for Engineers over 6 day period and still the problem not fixed. I had to take so much time off work I nearly lost my job. In my opinion the Engineers were incompetent and not trained sufficiently to understand what to do to solve the problem. They contradicted and blamed each other, and on every occasion left ensuring us that the problem had been fixed, when it hadn't been. Had to employ local Firm at great expense to ... more

    I had the most comprehensive service they offer (Homecare 400 - covers boiler, radiators, all electrical wiring, fuseboxes etc, all plumbing including drains - £29/mo for minimum 12 months). Despite this, I called them 3 times in they year and all 3 times they refused to do the necessary work and I had to pay someone else to repair it. Here are the times I called them: 1. Hot water stopped working. Engineer came same day. Said that because hot water came from a separate boiler not covered by British Gas unless I had taken out separate cover for an extra boiler.     Advantages Advantages The concept I was sold and subsequently bought made sense.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Unable to trust British Gas. Now appears to be the most expensive option. 2,500 plus 700, plus!

    Advice Please - I can be reached at packart(at)me.com I have had British Gas landlord cover for the boiler in my rental property since 2005. The boiler was replaced in 2000, so still relatively new when I began paying the monthly service fee to British Gas. I estimate my payments in total for peace of mind are in excess of 2,500 GBP. The boiler has required very little maintenance until recently. This is a high price to pay, but due to renting the property I considered this an important service to ensure successful lettings.     Disadvantages Disadvantages During peak times you have to fight your case to be seen quicker (e.g. heating failing in winter)

    I have only praise this service having used homecare at least once a year (often more) since we started paying for it three years ago. British Gas have been in every instance extremely quick, and very helpful, sometimes unbelievably so - when we spotted soggy carpet near airing cupboard i.e. water tank leaking, the BG engineer was here within 10 MINUTES of the electrician telling me. They drained the tank to stop the mess, and replaced it within 2 working days. Other examples are dynarod being here within the hour, both times we needed them.     BG HomeCare - What a joke! My mother (78) took out HomeCare so she didn't have to bother me if anything went wrong. Nice theory except that BG could NOT organise a pppparty in brewery. It was simple problem. Immersion heater had gone. With a local plumber it would have gone like this: Plumber turns up starts tank draining, checks immersion heater and if one on his van then has a cup tea while tank drains, otherwise trip to local builder's merchant to pick up part. Fits part. Turns water back on. Job done, about 1/2 a day a most because it's a big tank (Econ 7) on ground floor so bottom is 2 ... more

    I have a british gas home care cover at £25 a month, but when it comes to emergency they take 3-4 days to repair. I was left with 3 days without hot water and central heating. Their engineers are very rude and so is their customer service staff. I would never ever recommend them to any one. Its a waste of money and worse service ever. The engineers are never on time for the appt and when come they find ways to leave as soon as they dont have parts to repair. I am not sure why they call it a emergency service as they dont really care whatever your poblem is. I will not recommentd them to anyone ... more

    Advantages Advantages The yearly sevice, buts thats if they don't cause more problems when carrying it out.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Totally useless in an emergency, don't expect a quick resolution to the problem.

    I live in a rented property and unfortunatly my landlord is with British Gas home care, what ever you do don't rely on them in an emergency. If you really need them they are definitely no help, this is our sixth day without heating or hot water. On one occasion they called to fix the boiler, turned off our water and didn't retun till 4 days later, mean while we freeze to death and have no water. Even before this occasion the work Men have failed to fix quite simple jobs, it usuall takes two engineers for one job.
