I recently married, as my wife and I had lived together for many years prior, a lot of our guests were kind enough to give us cash or cheque as a gift. I've been a Clydesdale Bank Customer for 25 years. I visited my local branch to deposit the gifts we had received. I queued for about 10 minutes and when I finally reached the teller she asked what service I required. I asked to make a deposit and handed over all cash and cheques along with my current account bank card. She pointed out that one on the cheques had no name on it and would I like to write my name on. OK. She then asked if my wife ... more

Been with this bank for 7 years. As well as large fixed interest rate loan our business has an overdraft in excess of £150k. One day before the overdraft was due for renewal the bank manager came to our house and says that unless we agree to sign a new fixed rate agreement for our loan (a higher rate of course) he won't renew the overdraft and all of it will be repayable the next day - incurring large daily penalties if we fail to do so. We have no option but to sign the new agreement which costs us another £10k per year in interest. As soon as we can move to another bank I will be reporting ... more

    Advantages Advantages Internet/ banking

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to communicate with bank by phone directly.

Good internet options keeps you on track of your finances. But the inability to contact your own branch directly is very poor. Especially when the call centre cannot get direct contact with your branch due to it being engaged. Customer service is poor. With usual questions, do you want a credit card/loan?? I have found that customer assistants appear to have less knowledge than in the past. There is a difficulty in parking in certain branches. There appears to a lack of a personal touch in the bank as well. On one occasion I was to open another account and they did not contact me to finalize ... more

Advantages Advantages They don't charge for their ATMs

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rubbish rates, rubbish service, closed branches & ATMs

I have been with the Clydesdale bank since I was at school in the early 1970s, the word 'loyal customer' obviously doesn't mean anything whatsoever to a bank. My current account last year earned me a huge 12p of interest after tax!! That is after paying my wages into this account every month & keeping about £1000 of emergency cash in the account all the time. I recently moved to the Bank of Scotland who is paying over 6% gross for the same type of account & the Clydesdale contacted me wondering why I left!!!! The Clydesdale bank have closed so many branches in recent years, closed their ATMs & ... more

Advantages Advantages can't think of any

Disadvantages Disadvantages poor service, low interest

I have had a current account and buy-to-let mortgage with the Clydesdale for 15 years. The interest rates on both have always been miserable, but this was made up for by having access to the bank manager for more personalised decisions and service. It now seems to be very difficult to get any level of personalised service from the Clydesdale. Letters are sent out without a contact phone number or address, and I have to go onto the internet to get the phone number. Contact is via a call centre, often with long waiting times - 15 minutes seems to be about average. They usually can't help, and ... more

I was with the Clydesdale Bank for 24yrs. For 22 of these years I had a good inome and they were very helpful. However, when I became a student again and my income dramatically fell, the banking charges associated with this drop in income became prohibitively expensive, I even got charged £5 if my balance was less than £50 at any time over the month, which meant I didn't have access to £50 of my money without penalty. My new bank doesn't do this and meet with me once a year for an annual review to ensure my account meets my requirements When I graduate I will stay with them as I get a much ... more

Advantages Advantages Their basic account takes you no matter what and comes with an online card

Disadvantages Disadvantages The interest rates are not the best, but not the worst either.

Many people make a big hoo hah about changing banks these days. Personally, I don't bother. You see, Clydesdale doesnt offer me gimmicks or 0% on transfers but we sting you elsewhere. Instead they offer you a steady service, everything carries a low charge (but nothing is passed) and I am not unfairly penalised for doing something wrong. I also get excellent service and things explained to me in English (not Indian!). Interested? Read on... HISTORY LESSON: I know we all like history, so let's get right into the nitty gritty of the history behind the rise of Clydesdale Bank. Clydesdale Bank was ... more

For 30 years I, and then we, have had our bank account with the Clydesdale Bank. I would advise anyone thinking of using this bank to think very carefully before they do. I started banking with them as a student nurse, opened a joint account when we got married, got our first and second mortgage from them then we went into business for ourselves. Everything was great, we lived on an island and the local bank manager was really helpful, business did well and then we got the neighbour from hell next door! Eventually we decided to sell up,it took 2 years to sell, but we had tenants in it till then ... more

I have been a customer of Clydesdale bank for about 13 years, and for the first 10 or so, I was very happy with the service. However, they have been slow(!) - actually done nothing - to keep pace with internet services. They do have a reasonable telephone banking service and I make full use of that and find it mostly to be very good but given the money I have had with them over the years, they are very stingy with their interest and extremely quick to cahrge you at punitive rates as soon as you even marginally cross one of their lines! I simply have got fed up with always having to phone up ... more

The Pay-In Point Service is basically a paying in slip on which you record the amount in cash and cheques you are paying in along with your name and account number, then you post the completed slip, cash and or cheques inside an envelope into a slot in a safe inside the branch thus you don't have to que to get served. Okay I used it a few times until one Monday I paid £175 cash £20 cheque making £195, phoned the telephone banking service later in the day and my account had been credited £ 195.00 okay I thought. Ten days later I get a phone call from the preson who had written me the cheque ... more
