Advantages Advantages Enchanting mix of cultures, historic streets, Alhambra Palace

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots of hills!

Many Brits heading for Spain go straight for the well-established tourist spots of Barcelona and further south, the resorts of the Costa Del Sol. But just an hour's drive from the popular resorts of Malaga and Torremolinos, there is a unique city which offers thousands of years of history and a laid-back atmosphere. Granada is a million miles away from the Brit-infested karaoke bars and heaving beaches Spain is often associated with. I visited in October 2006 with few expectations, as I was just passing through for a few days, but found myself falling in love with its unique ambience and fresh ... more

Advantages Advantages Great value for money

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only direct flights are Ryan Air from Stanstead

Where to go on a last minute weekend trip to celebrate a special birthday in January? After a couple of hours surfing, Granda shone out like the jewell it undoubtedly is. We bought a a last minute, weekend flight and accomodation package. Flying from Sanstead at 5pm and returning three nights later on the 9pm flight. So we had two nights and two whole days to enjoy the City. We stayed at a 4* hotel close to "Via Colon" which is the main city centre street. The total cost was a fabulous £166 for the two of us! Before we left, we also booked online tickets for entrance to the Alhambra this cost ... more

Granada ! where is that I hear you ask. Well go onto Ryan Air website and now book a return ticket direct !. One of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This huge compound of buildings - including the Generalife - summer palace, with its fountains and gardens - stands at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada. The Sacromonte hill, used to be home to a large Gypsy community and their influence can ... more

Advantages Advantages The Alhambra, the Albaicin and the setting

Disadvantages Disadvantages The crowds and the inaccessability of the city centre

GRANADA must have one of the most spectacular settings of any city in Spain, perhaps Europe, maybe even beyond. It lies on a wide, fertile plan with the permanently snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada forming an impressive backdrop. It's these snow-capped peaks which have guaranteed the city's success - ensuring a constant water supply long before humans had even learned how to conjugate irrigation, never mind put it into practice. Combined with it's relative proxamity (sic) to the sea which ensured a milder climate than some of the cities further inland, and you can see why this was an ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful city, good transport links.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not much English spoken by locals

To get to Granada in Andalucia, the cheapest thing to do is score a cheap flight off the internet to traditional loud-mouthed Brit destination, Malaga ;-) and then hop on a cheap as cheap can be coach down to Granada for just eight euros. To do this, simply get on the number 19 bus at Malaga airport, which will take you to the bus station, then ask at the ticket office for Granada. Very easy. Once in Granada, a number of options are open to you. Sta travel (evil swines) will tell you there are no hostels in Granada, and will sell you one for Madrid (thanks guys). Run a mile, and when you get ... more

I have already written several opinions on my experiences in Spain so far, but the time has come to write about my favourite place here, Granada. For those unfamiliar with Spanish Geography, Granada is in Southern Spain, about 70 miles north-east of the Costa del Sol and very close to Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada. It is an ancient city and was for many years the capital of Moorish Spain - the Moors being an old Musilm people related to modern Arabs. In fact, until the Christian "reconquest" in 1562, Granada was the last bastion of Islam in the West . Nowadays, Granada is ... more

Think Southern Spain and the chances are you think of the Costa del Sol, but move an hour or so inland and you come to one of the wonders of the modern world - The Alhambra. Built by the Moors in the last Moorish stronghold before Christianity took over in Spain, this building dominates the City and rightly so. Standing on a hill overlooking the old town, the Albaicin, is one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in the world. The intricacy of the nooks and crannies of all the rooms just have to be seen to be believed. But there is more to Granada than just the Alhambra. The Albaicin ... more

Advantages Advantages Beautiful, friendly population, the best cty in Spain

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None!

Granada is not the usual first choice of a place to visit in Spain - but it should be! Granada is situated in Andalucia in the South of Spain, just an hour's drive from Malaga Airport and the coast. Most people will visit Granada for the Alhambra, a beautiful castle built by the Moors, situated at the top of a hill with exquisite views over the beautiful city. However, there is much more to Granada - the Cathedral, the Albaicin - the old Muslim neighbourhood, the Alcaiceria - the old Muslim market, the Cartuja, restaurants, cinemas. Just experience this wonderful city. Sit next to one of its ... more

Advantages Advantages Historical buildings, scenery and atmosphere

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Crowds

Most visitors to Granada arrive and depart on the same day, specifically to see the Alhambra. As a consequence the convergence of coaches and tour groups causes congestion, queues, and dissatisfaction when people cannot obtain tickets. Stunning though it is, the Alhambra does lose some of its magic engulfed in teeming crowds. There is more to Granada than the Alhambra, however, and we travelled by car from our coastal holiday base to spend two days in the city. We stayed at the Hotel Alhambra Palace, which is set in the cliff face only a few minutes walk downhill from the Alhambra car park and ... more

    Advantages Advantages The Alhambra

Disadvantages Disadvantages This isn't the place for a really cheap holiday

I visited Granada on a tour around Andalucia - it was probably my favourite bit of the tour because of the Alhambra. This is a magnificent building - the craftsmanship in the carvings and decorations is amazing. The gardens are wonderful too. There are remanants of the Moorish conquest of this part of Spain are in most of the big cities in Andalucia but this is probably the greatest of all the buildings. However, there is more to Granda than this one building as spectacular as it is - the food is wonderful and we attended a flamenco show at the Neptune Gardens which was excellent. If you are ... more
