Advantages Advantages good for 1st time buyers

Disadvantages Disadvantages did not offer a good rate after fixed term ended, overcharge customers

*This is the second review I posted on Ciao and have edited it as it needed more information and an update* For the purpose of this review I am writing about my experience of having a mortgage with Halifax and am not reviewing Halifax and it’s services as a whole. I am very much aware that for some they have had a great experience with them, but for me after being a loyal customer for such a long time. I felt that they had let me down and recently I realised that I had overpaid when my mortgage came to an end and successfully received a refund from them. Halifax is a leading building society ... more

Advantages Advantages Make you feel better about the way you do your own job.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Difficult to contact, inept when you finally manage it, unable to answer straight questions. Underhand

To start at the beginning, I took out my first mortgage in 1984. I used the Halifax B.S. for reasons that escape me after all these years. In fairness to them, everything was generally quite painless. However, I did have cause to raise a couple of queries with them and remember that it was awfully hard work and when I moved after three years vowed that I would not use the Halifax again. In 2003 we moved to our present address and our broker recommended a Halifax mortgage, fixed for three years, and with the facility to make overpayments. I voiced my reluctance and he assured me that although ... more

Advantages Advantages Great service from the biggest lender

Disadvantages Disadvantages There are still one or two better deals out there

Here's a little story from last Summer. Having held a mortgage with the Abbey National (Scabby Abbey) for a few years, I was at best disappointed to discover I was paying 6.1% (their classic rate! Ha! Read classic as RIP OFF) when their new customers where getting a 5% deal (after discount expires). Given that they were reluctant to arrange the same deal for me, I decided to shop round and see what else was in the market place. After doing a little research, I booked an appointment with my local Halifax branch for 7pm the following night (yes! 7pm - they open until 8pm in the Trafford Centre!) ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very helpful Service

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots of documentation

We decided to buuy our first house over 6 months ago, so I set about treking around the high street to find out what was on offer. Although most banks were very helpful and advice was given within a short period of time I liked the overall service of the Halifax. We managed to buy the house through their Estate Agents and process the mortgage all in one go. Which helps when both of you work nine till five, monday to friday. They worked out the money we could borrow and our upper limit and then adviced us about all the different products available to us. It was all done in a very relaxed manner ... more

    Advantages Advantages bending rules

    Disadvantages Disadvantages false promises

My fiance is currently with the halifax for his mortgage and I have never seen sneakier tactics by people you are trusting. To put you in the picture, he went to his solicitors who advised the halifax would be the best option in his cicumstances. The first meeting took place between himself and the halifax who informed him they would be able to help no problem. The problem arrived when he was told he would have to pay a £700.00 deposit at this point he told them he did not have access to this sort of money and again was told no problem we'll sort you out with a homeowners loan for this amount ... more

Advantages Advantages Seem Good At The Time

Disadvantages Disadvantages Beware Small Print And New Deals

Mortgages are like party political broadcasts. Tell me about a mortgage and I’ll listen, I’ll even think I’ve understood you, but when I try to tell someone later what was so brilliant about your particular brand it’s gone. It went into my brain I’m sure, but somewhere along the way I lost it, or that’s what it seems like. It's not that I'm slow, but with variable rates, capped rates, trackers and so on, I trust the building society will listen to my story and find the mortgage that is best for me. That's mistake number one. I should as an adult, be able to ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

Disadvantages Disadvantages Existing customers are charged interest more than new ones.

I have a discounted Hailfax mortgage and as the Bank of England have been dropping the base rates, so my mortgage has reduced. However, Halifax advertise their base rate as 6.25% but my mortgage is discounted off another base rate of 7% Having queried this and spoken to several staff at their call centre, I have been given various reasons as to why this is but none seem to really make much sense. Querying it in the branch has shown that the staff there are less informed than those in the call centre. It seems the 6.25% is for new customers only. Existing customers are stuck with the higher ... more

Advantages Advantages seem to be pretty cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Interest Rates can go up as well as down

I am currently looking in to getting a mortgage. I have done quite a bit of research, i.e. shopping around, and the Halifax has offered me the best deal. I am aware they are the market leader for lenders, so this was my first choice, and I was even surprised myself to find how cheap they were. The mortgage I’m going to go for is a Fixed Variable Mortgage (contradiction I know). The mortgage is discounted a lot for 3 or five years then, it goes up to just below the rate of interest. This may be risky if the Bank of England raises the interest rates a lot in three years time, but with the ... more

I took my first ever mortgage out just over 2yrs ago with the Halifax whom I found to be very helpful. It was suggested that I take out at the same time building insurance, which I obviously had to have, with them as it would make life so much easier. This I elected to pay alongside my mortgage repayments monthly. When it came up to the yearly renewal I received the quote from the Halifax and decided to ring round other insurance brokers to see if I could obtain abetter rate. After afew days I decided to change over to a different company for the insurance. I contacted the Halifax to inform ... more

Advantages Advantages very friendly helpful staff, can offer services to the likes of me (!) whereas otherlenders wrote me off as a liability

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none really

As my profile says, I am a student counting my pennies, and it wasn’t until the beginning of last year I realised how much of my precious student loan I was using on rent. I live in a very popular, bustling area of Sheffield called Crookes, very popular with students as well as professionals such as teachers and doctors, where we all live peacefully. This area is about as close as you are going to get to the university, but the privilege of living within a 15 minute walk costs you dearly. My basic rent is £200 a month without bills. Last year I changed my course and met an ... more
