5 Stars The Philosophers Stone Review with images 18/08/2012

Advantages Advantages Written by J K Rowling - she knows how to tell a story

Disadvantages Disadvantages Why did it take me so long to get around to reading it?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Why read this one?... What tempted me to read this book? Until recently I had not considered reading this book, I had seen all of the movies because my daughter had insisted that they were so good I had to do. I have to admit to finding them enjoyable but liked the later ones better as the characters were older. I made the decision to read the series, by J K Rowling, after it was highly recommended by a favourite author of mine - Mr Stephen King. I know what he likes in a book and felt inspired to read this after his endorsement. I was almost put off ... more

    Advantages Advantages Attention to detail

Disadvantages Disadvantages More of a children's book than the rest of the series.

Harry Potter and Me* I jumped on the Harry Potter bandwagon in 2000 when the 4th book "Goblet of Fire" was due out. I started the series from 1, quickly read 2 and 3 then bought book 4 on the release day. I was instantly hooked and couldn't put the books down. I absolutely adore all of the books and films and am dying to get to the theme park when it opens in America! *Harry Potter Series* Harry Potter is a series of 7 books by author J.K.Rowling. These are the first books that she has had published, and if she never got out of bed again, she would have enough money to last several lifetimes ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good Story

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be a bit boring

Harry Potter After 10 years of the films there's no need - in some individuals opinions - to read the book although I'd argue that sometimes the book is a lot better than the film and in this case it is. Harry Potter is an orphan child with parents who he'd incidentally been told died in a car crash but actually hadn't and that he was a Wizard and not just some scrawny boy for Dudley (Harry's cousin) to bully him. In Harry Potter you watch/imagine Harry growing through seven years at Hogwarts (well five really) and how his love churns for Ginny and how he always seems to save the day. What ... more

Advantages Advantages It forms part of a collection so the story is continued and more characters a introduced.

Disadvantages Disadvantages the books are just a little long in length, but still very enjoyable

Harry Potter and the Philsopher's Stone is a book about a young boy called Harry who discovers he is not an ordinary boy and is in fact a Wizard. Whilst living with his horrible Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon and Cousin Dudley in a cupboard underneath the stairs he is introduced to a man called Hagrid who lives on the castle grounds who helps Harry embark on a magical journey to Hogwarts - a school for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry then becomes friends with Hermione Granger and Ronald Wesley who overcome many obstacles and mysteries that lie within the castle grounds of Hogwarts. In my opinion J ... more

Advantages Advantages wonderful beginning to a classic series

Disadvantages Disadvantages Beginning, introduction so characters not as well developed

A wonderful beginning to a series of novels that everyone should read! For children and adults alike, both my kids and I love these novels. Not the best written in terms of quality but the series definitely gets better and better! I have read this 3 times now, most recently just before the 7th film was released, looking forward to seeing the next one! This is the first book in the Harry Potter series, with the reader being introduced to Harry, Ron and Hermione, the lead protagonists, and their wonderful world of witchcraft and wizardry. Some of the descriptions of this fantastical world ... more

Advantages Advantages Readable, great characters, great storyline

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesn't describe places and what people look like enough

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is a wonderful story about 'the boy who lived'. I would recommend this story to anyone who can read it because of the fantasy and the way it is worded so everything flows perfectly in time. I think that anyone could read this story and find only the good parts, but for the purpose of the review, the story does not describe scenes very much, and it leaves out what many characters look like as well. But apart from that the storyline is great, enticing the reader on-wards to the end of the fantastic novel. The book is in an easy to read format and gives the ... more

Advantages Advantages Both children and adults can enjoy it, gripping, memorable characters.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None!

From The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe to Lord of the Rings, fantasy has been a popular subject in writing for years. But when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone came out in 1997, the genre gained an even bigger audience than before. Read by both children and adults, it went on to become one of the most successful book franchises ever. There are now seven books in the series, but the first is one of the most memorable. Is this because it was such a breakthrough in fantasy reading, or just because it’s better than the rest? It’s a tough question to answer, but either way, Harry Potter ... more

    Advantages Advantages creative, unique, enchanting

Disadvantages Disadvantages limited depth and vocabulary

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first in the series. I first read this book when I was aged 8 - 9 and at that age, it really did open up a whole new magical world for me. I instantly got hooked and couldn't wait for the next books in he series. However, after reading the book again, I don't think that it is as enchanting as it was when read as a child. If you are buying this for a mature reader, do not get fooled by the quality of the latest books, in my opinion this is not a book for adults. J.K. Rowling has said to have matured the books as the original readers got older and ... more

In My Opinion i thought this book was truly amazing, i fell the Rowling has done an inspired job in introducing the characters and setting up the other books. i was gripped and excited as i ran through this world of wizards, magic and spells. over all i think and amazing job has been done and anyone who has not read this book and is into fantasy it is a must!
