    Advantages Advantages none

Disadvantages Disadvantages same charges as the banks .

this building society acts just like a greedy bank with charges of £20 and £15 (total £35) even if overdrawn by one pence for 1 day only. An interest rate of probably a Billion APR. I moved from the Halifax to escape from the greed and arrogance and as a reaction against them partly causing the economic crisis - yet feel Nationwide , with its charges , is just the same . I fact despite them refunding the original charges as a Goodwill Gesture, the account was overdrawn so Another Charge has been applied!! Double charged.... a vicious circle of charges leading to more charges on a dormant ... more

I recently approached Nationwide as we unfortunately took out a five year fixed rate mortgage with them in 2007 which will end in August 2012. The interest rate on our current mortgage is extortionate compared to the current standard rate and as I have just lost my job which was extremely well paid and have been forced to take a significantly lower salary I asked if they would consider allowing us out of the fixed rate mortgage 7 months early to help us manage our finances. Their answer was simply "no". They will not consider it and offered no assistance whatsoever. We have had a mortgage with ... more

Advantages Advantages All banks appear the same. As a building socienty they "should" be different.

Disadvantages Disadvantages In my opinion they can't be trusted (but can any bank)?

I've had a Nationwide account since they were Nationwide Anglia back in the 80s so have seen all sides of this organization. Until around 10 years ago they seemed to be very good, a little incompetent at times, but usually willing to make amends. In the last few years or so things have gone downhill in a big way. Seemingly random and un-predictable charges seem to be being added to transactions and I've even had charges applied to charges! This came to a head for me out of the blue last year, when I got letter dated Christmas day (!) which I received in January, telling me my overdraft was ... more

Advantages Advantages no problems with internet banking or phone banking

Disadvantages Disadvantages poorly-trained staff, wrong information, staff wasting customer's time, unresponsive to complaints

Consistently incorrect advice given to me by staff over the phone. In purchasing a new car, I was told there would be no problem in using my card. WHen I went in the next day to use it, it was declined. I traveled to the branch to withdraw the cash, only to find that 48 hours notice was required for a withdrawal of over £500. Despite the fact their staff had given me wrong information. So I wasted an afternoon and incurred expenses including insuring both my new and old car for an additional two days. I then arranged a CHAPS transfer, and again incorrect information was given about how long it ... more

Advantages Advantages I have not seen any

Disadvantages Disadvantages A BS that lives in th 70s

I have banked with them for ten years and have always had problems with them. I always seems so hard to process a simple transaction for eg, to change you address you have to fill out reals of forms... its 2010 have they relised that yet. It also seems the look after older customers rather than new customers get the feeling you have to be in the right click.. I put up with a nasty cash card for about 10years lol, Went to natwest and instantly got a visa debit card, a master card CC with £1000 limit and a £2100 overdraft. I could not understand this so I got a copy of my credit score and report ... more

Nationwide are the largest building society in the world. The only bank that is larger than them is HSBC. Nationwide offer a wide range of products such as loans, credit cards, current accounts, savings accounts, bonds etc. Whilst their interest rates on certain products are not brilliant at the moment, they are one of the most secure establishments to put your money into at the moment. They are part of the FSA guarantee, stating that if anything was to happen to the company, you will be guaranteed 50,000 of any investments that you have with the society. Their online website is quick ... more

Nationwide are very secretive about land line (or any fax numbers). Their customer Service is appalling. No one answers the telephone....Now that we have paid for all off-peak land line calls the local branch has gone over to 0845 tel nos - more expense

Advantages Advantages Friendly staff, wide range of products to suit all, competitive rates.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shuts at 12pm on a Saturday

I have had an account with Nationwide since I was around 5 years old. I suppose I feel a loyalty to them as I have never had any problems with them. The staff have always been helpful and friendly and I like the fact they are a building society, not a bank. They offer a wide range of products but here are ones I have used. Smart Account; I had a smart account when I was younger, the smart account is tax free and has competitive interest rates on every pound, so it doesn't matter how much you have in there like other accounts. You have o move to a normal current account at 16. I have now ... more

Advantages Advantages Good selection of financial products

Disadvantages Disadvantages If your requesting a transfer don't expect it to be easy

As a loyal Portman Building Society Customer I was a little sceptical as to what to expect when they were bought out by Nationwide Building Society. Nationwide claim they are "Proud to be different", and they certainly are. Although they supply a large number of high interest savings accounts, fixed rate ISA's at a whopping 6.15 percent and great value deals on mortgages I noticed a couple of downfalls as well. With specialised savings accounts customers are normally issued a passbook to track their investment records. Nationwide's Passbook is dark blue in complexion with the Nationwide logo ... more

Advantages Advantages Internet Banking and Branch Staff who help rather than hinder

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Telephone Access Hours

We now live abroad and have had experience with a number of UK banks and building societie. We transferred some of our bank accounts offshore and still retained our UK bank accounts for some transactions. Nationwide really outshines the rest in their helpful attitude and their honest advice. The branch staff are always helpful on the phone and they TRY to assist, not like some of the experiences we have had with others who have put up hurdles, made us change accounts and quite honestly asked for so much ID information that it is just unbelievable given that we have banked with some of them for ... more
