Advantages Advantages You are helped all along the way

Disadvantages Disadvantages Probably cost now but this is course dependent

To start studying at the Open University you may need to have already attained certain qualifications dependent on the course that you choose. In the Humanities, the subjects I chose, you can start by taking a foundation course which teaches several disciplines but within the context of a particular time. Mine by chance was the Victorian era and I studied Poetry, Literature, philosophy, history and art history within that time. I found this a fantastic approach to learning having never studied in this way before. The first course was a level 1 course which only came with a pass or fail. Each ... more

Advantages Advantages Study at home, OU is highly recognised and respected, good tutor support.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can feel lonely sometimes

I've been an undergraduate with the Open University since October 2010. I'm studying towards a BA (Hons) History. I am just coming towards the end of my first module of study AA100 The Arts Past and Present, AA100 is a level one general arts course and a required module in many arts course. It has many elements you might not find interesting if they're not part of what you are doing, but on the whole it's very good. I'm also about half way through my second module A200 Exploring History 1400-1900. A200 is a level 2 module and a required element for a history degree. Being a level 2 course it ... more

Advantages Advantages Very well taught with the option to pay in monthly installments

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

The Open University is a really excellent place to further your qualifications from in the comfort of your own home. Ideal for people who need to work full time or people with children or people who would like to study at their own pace. I opted to go down the OU path due to having left school a few years ago and going straight into the working world which has served me well but hasnt fulfilled me in any way at all other than in the financial sense. As I had been out of study for a while I decided to do one of the OU's short courses which basically get you back into the way of studying and ... more

Advantages Advantages you organize the study around your life

Disadvantages Disadvantages none. there can be no disadvantage to getting more knowlegeable!

I joined Open University last February after being out of education for the last 10 years. I started with a short 10 credits course on 'writing essays skills'; that was extremely helpful and gave me a boost of confidence to carry on. I'm currently studying a course called 'Intoduction to Social Science', which is my first one towards a degree in Psychology. Open University has a very progressive way to get you back into education, starting with easier tasks, helping you getting the writting and studying skills you are going to need in further stages. Introductory courses and Level one courses ... more

Advantages Advantages Superb teaching, study at your own pace and come out with a degree you will treasure

Disadvantages Disadvantages You will have to be self-motivated

When I left school I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do. I watched my friends go to University and come out 3 years later to do a job that had nothing to do with their degrees, and this always seemed to be a total waste of education to me. I'm so glad I waited. Joining the OU couldn't be easier. Their website open.ac.uk is simple and easy to navigate with a good online prospectus that clearly explains what courses you need to take to make up the relevant degree of your choosing. If you still are unsure they have plenty of advisors on hand who can guide you in the right direction. The cost ... more

Advantages Advantages can get your degree from africa to iceland

Disadvantages Disadvantages OU is not what academia is about

As a child the influences that shaped my value for education came from my Father. Having been raised in an orphanage by wicked German nuns who cracked him across the face and back for not cleaning the toilet perfectly with his toothbrush, my father learned from an early age that this life was a DIY experience, and there would be no free handouts, and everything you wanted would have to be earned the hard way. He went on to serve the Air Force, make his own way through law school, became a solicitor, barrister, and was about to be appointed Judge when sadly he suddenly passed away at the age of ... more

Advantages Advantages Well structured and good support network

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to keep yourself motivated

Finding myself at home due to long term health issues, and unable to do much, I decided to investigate doing an Open University course. I had first received literature from the Open University many years ago, but my circumsances changed and I didn't pursue it. So, now was the time! I have an interest in photography and thought that doing the Open University digital photography course would help me use my camera to its full potential. At the time I had a 10MP 35mm camera, which was more than enough for my requirement at the time. Having enroled on the course, I was duly sent all the literature ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages the apparent difference in tutors marking

I started my first course, AA100, in October 2008. From the off I was thoroughly impressed, the staff are really friendly and helpful. The work material came about month before the course started so you can get yourself in order, and i might have cheekily started going through the material a bit early too. The course materials are brilliant, good quality and bright, vivid pictures. I also got my assignment booklet before the course started, so I could prepare and work at my own pace instead of sticking with the course map. The forums are friendly and helpful.
