4 Stars Quick review of Philips WACS 700 by Level 0 jambermush 12/05/2008
Fantastic Idea & wonderful gadget, allowing you to store your entire music colelction on its hard drive and to be accessed throughout the house with extra stations. Very easy to use, however Philips' support didn't sort out my problem when the CD drive stopped working. I'm now left with a system that plays everything stored on it, but I can't add more music to it!

5 Stars Quick review of Philips WACS 700 by avezard 17/07/2007
Whilst this system is not perfection itself, it's a very creditable attempt and for the price range is bringing sophisticated features to the masses that you'd normally have had to spend a fortune to buy. I love: wireless streaming-easy to set up and use with robust network, looks-cool and stylish, mounting options for speakers, sound quality-I'm no hi fi buff but it sounds good to me, MP3 player like options. Overall being able to have multiple music options with just base unit and wireless outstation-has given me many happy moments! I don't love-software is a bit clunky and unforgiving, radio could ... more

Advantages Advantages great value and all your music in one pretty box

Disadvantages Disadvantages like a true filmstar, not as slim as in the publicity shots!

Where to start? A truly marvelous and novel piece of kit! Have a mountain of CDs taking up shelf space? Buy one of these and stick them all in the loft! These are sooo easy to use at first you think you must be missing something. Drop the CD in, press record, and the device converts the CD to mp3 and stores it on the inbuilt 40GB hard drive (note there's an even newer model available with an 80GB drive, called the WACS 7000). And that's it. The machine will then play the mp3, accessed from an ipod-style menu, filled in from a built-in version of Gracenote which completes (most) ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy set up and ability to stream music to any room

Disadvantages Disadvantages Limited features, poor display and backlight

Philips have jumped ahead of the game with a B&O look-alike device that brings HiFi up to today's standard. The major features of this device are: 1 - 40GB hard drive to store hundreds of albums. 2 - Built in CD to play or RIP CDs (Main unit) 3 - Built in tuner (all units) 4 - Wireless transmission of music from main unit to satellites either a: in broadcast mode so all stations play the same music b: in follow me mode so you transfer the music to the room you are about to enter c: in 'multi' mode so you can listen to different music in each room 5 - Software to manage albums from a PC via ... more

Advantages Advantages fantastic Sound quality, Looks Groovy,

Disadvantages Disadvantages Major Fault C.Ds gets jammed and will not come out, cannot be taken out manual.

This looks great, sound great, but lacks some very important pionts. 1) Quality 2) after care Had 2 of wacs700 units gone back faulty.both had the discs stuck in and would not eject.i think there is either a design fault or a batch of fautly units, i have based this on 2 out of 2 having the same problems within 2 weeks . Bear in mind it takes 1 hour of burning for every hour of music, during this period you cannot put the unit into echo mode, standby or turn of, so if you do 8 discs you cannot turn of for 8 hours. My first disc got stuck after the 8th disc and the second after 40 discs, so a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Wireless Streaming

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Small hard drive

I've read about it and I'm still not so sure about the audio quality of this device, it looks like it will do the job for most people, but it does not seem to be made for audiophiles, now I'm looking at 2 other options, the musica (www.olive.us) and the sonos (www.sonos.com), just wondering if either of these would offer better sound quality. One of my concerns is due to the fact that the Philips WACS700, has built in speakers, which in one hand sounds very convenient, but in the other hand it does not let me take advantage of my high end speakers. Unless it has the option to allow use either ... more

Advantages Advantages Wireless Client/Server Hifi. Hard drive to store CD's, no messy speaker cables

Disadvantages Disadvantages Noticable lack of bass on the clients, no alarm function

This is a revolutionary Multi-Room HiFi that allows you to stream music from the server to up to 5 additional clients placed anywhere within your home. In terms of specifcation, you can read up on it by simply searching for this on google. I'll quickly go though the main points. 40gig hard drive allowing for up to 750 CD's to be stored (assuming 10 tracks per CD each of 4 minutes duration). Wifi capability allows music to be streamed from the server to the clients. Updatable Gracenote database that recognises a CD as soon as you put it in. Track info displayed on both clients and server. 2 way ... more

Advantages Advantages Store your CDs on the system

Disadvantages Disadvantages No DAB, No internet radio

The system consists of the WAC700 - this is the centre containing the CD player and 40GB hard disk, and the WAS700 - the station (up to five WAS700 can be linked to one centre) - no CD player or hard disk. Both parts contain FM radio (with RDS) but not AM. CDs are ripped using the centre onto the hard disk and from here they can be played via the centre or wireless streamed to station for playing. I have encountered copy protection problems with 1CD out of 130 ripped so far. So for this you have to rip the CD on a PC and transfer it to the centre (using ethernet link or wirelessly) CDs are so ... more
