Advantages Advantages Plenty of internationals in current squad

Disadvantages Disadvantages County form disrupted by test calls

The Surrey side of the 1950s was perhaps one of the finest county sides ever. The team won seven consecutive county championships. The team consisted of great players such as Ken Barrington, Peter May, Alec + Eric Bedser, Jim Laker, Tony Lock, Peter Loader etc. Ken Barrington - was a hard-hitting batsman. He even managed the England touring team to the West Indies in 1980-81. On that tour there was the infamous Robin Jackman affair, which needed all of Ken’s diplomatic skills. The strain proved too much for him and he passed away on that tour with a heart attack. Peter May - was England ... more

Advantages Advantages Good strength in depth, excellent bowler in Saqlain

Disadvantages Disadvantages England call-ups can weaken the team on paper

Having been deserved county champions for the last 2 years it looks like Surrey will be close again this year. Although they are not top (yet) and certainly not running away with it the return of Saqlain Mushtaq now the Pakistan tour has finished will give a timely boost to the side. Surrey are now captained by Adam Hollioake and he still looks to fulfil his early promise and secure a place in the England team. He is possibly the next England captain in waiting if Nasser Hussain either starts to falter or injures his fingers or thumb (again). Hollioake is a good all-round cricketer but as yet ... more

    Advantages Advantages tenacity

    Disadvantages Disadvantages loss of form

The news of the arrival of mark ramprakash came as a surprise to me, as I have alwyas been a follower of his career. Having assumed a position of authority following the retirement of Mike Gatting at Middlesex, one could have safely presumed that this was going to be another one-county man. however, his prolonged and tormented failures at the crease led him to lose his england place and so I think the move, as a consequence, is a good one for the sake of the man's career. Cricket must now wake up and introduce a proper transfer system. ... more

Advantages Advantages great feat, well done

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Well done to bowler Gary Butcher for his magnificent four timer for Surrey against Derbyshire today. It's brought cricket back into the forefront of the media, just before the Test Match starts. It was very interesting listening to Radio 5 live this afternoon when they ran the story of his four wickets in four balls. They were trying to figure out a descriptive word for the feat. Obviously three wickets on the trot is a 'HAT TRICK' So what's four on the trot. Listeners rang in, emailed and thee was plenty oif banter - but they saved the best one till last... ...four wickets in four ball - 'an ... more

Advantages Advantages A team full of internationals and entertainers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can very occasionally lose as spectacularly as they usually win!!

If you are, then I wholeheartedly recommend that you go NOW - this current squad is arguably the most talented ever seen in English domestic cricket and you are almost guaranteed to see a good day's entertainment. In years to come virtually EVERY member of the current team will be remembered as one of the county's all-time greats and, believe me, sides like this one only come along once in a generation. I think I'm as qualified as anyone to give this opinion since I have witnessed almost every day's play involving Surrey since the beginning of the 1998 season - and written two books, 'Pursuing ... more

Advantages Advantages Good main squad of 16 players

Disadvantages Disadvantages Might be stuck without a spinner soon, still playing division 2 1dayers

Current county champions Surrey, who would bet against them winning it again. They have a team that excites with Ali Brown and Ian Ward providing the fireworks then batsmen like Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Mark Butcher and the Hollioake brothers behind them. Martin Bicknell (how has he only managed a few appearances for England) and Alex Tudor lead the bowling attack backed up by Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury. Plus there is youth comming through like Tim Murtagh and Kevin Barrett. When you go and watch the Surrye Lions there is a little something else though, there are plenty of ... more
