    Advantages Advantages some sound advice

    Disadvantages Disadvantages ridiculously rigid routines

Well firstly I have no idea why this book is in the health and beauty section and not the parental books section – it’s a book about coping with babies from 0 to 1 year especially with regard to getting the little darlings to sleep through the night. Perhaps it’s the health of the parents/mother who the categorisers at Ciao had in mind? Anyway, as it says in the intro, Gina Ford is a very experienced maternity nurse (a nurse who goes to live with mothers to help them look after babies – wish I could afford one of those!). Her philosophy is essentially that babies need ... more

WHAT THE BACK COVER SAYS.... The prospect of bringing a tiny baby home for the first time is daunting. Horror stories of sleep-starved nights, inconsolable crying and feeding on demand can make any proud parent fearful of what the future may hold. If you can afford it, you hire a maternity nurse to help the baby settle but for most parents this isn't an option. The Contented Little Baby Book is the perfect alternative. Based on twelve years of research and studying the natural sleep rhythms and feeding patterns of young babies, top maternity nurse Gina Ford has devised a strategy that is easy ... more

    Advantages Advantages some useful advice

    Disadvantages Disadvantages detached from reality

Before I bought this book, I had heard many people talk about it, some were very against Gina Ford’s parenting methods, some the very opposite. After the first read, I absolutely hated the Little Contented Baby Book, not so much because of the sleep training stuff etc. but because it was like reading a maths book; devoid of all emotion involved with bringing up children. I’m not talking about pampering (although I do feel you cannot pamper an infant anyway, as they do not know what it means) or anything like that, rather than the actual feeling of LOVING your child. However, I ... more

Advantages Advantages great as a guide, some very useful tips

Disadvantages Disadvantages makes you feel like a failure if all does not go to plan!

The New Contented Little Baby Book was recommended to me when I was just three months pregnant. Being very innocent and believing that I would have the perfect baby anyway I decided to give the book a read to help me along. Gina Ford - author, claims that by following her very strict routines for feeding, sleeping and everything else in between you could have a baby that "feeds well and regularly from breast or bottle, is less likely to suffer colic and sleeps through the night from an early age." - With claims like that which soon to be parents would not give it a read? Two weeks later and ... more

Advantages Advantages You will get your baby sleeping through the night and it does what it says.

Disadvantages Disadvantages If you are not into routines then this won't be for you.

** This was one of my first ops and I have decided to rewrite it. The rewrite is very long. Be warned** As I used to be a nanny I am aware of how important routines are for children. If they have a routine they feel safe and secure. I have used the routine in this book in some of my past jobs and it worked very well then. I was very keen to try it when I had my first baby, but also a little dubious about whether it would work for us when we were the ones doing the night as well as the day. What can I expect. Gina Ford has been a maternity nurse for more than 300 babies. For those that don't ... more

Advantages Advantages Good advice, easy to follow

Disadvantages Disadvantages May be too regimented for some people

I was bought this book, and the weaning book that accompanies it by a friend whilst I was pregnant with my first baby. They had recently had thier first, and to hear them talk you would think that the book changed his nappies by itself! In fact this book tends to provoke strong feelings where ever you mention it (well on baby related websites mostly!). People either seem to love it or think it is the source of all evil in this world! So what's all the fuss about? The author, Gina Ford, is according to her book jacket, 'a top maternity nurse', who has devised a series of routines that claim to ... more

What is it? *********** A(nother) parenting advice book. It is written by Gina Ford, a nanny with many years experience in looking after other people's children. However, she doesn't have any sprogs of her own and there are times in the book that it shows. This book is essentially a timetable to follow in order to achieve the end result of your young baby napping (at the same time every day in the same circumstances) and sleeping 12 hours a night..... As anyone who is doing a bit of internet research prior to buying this book knows, there is no half-way house on opinions about Gina Ford's book ... more

Advantages Advantages tried and tested routines, helpful examples/case studies

Disadvantages Disadvantages difficult to find what you want initally

If like me you can't tell the difference between overtired screaming, hungry screaming, in terrible pain screaming etc. etc. etc. then this book is for you. It gave me a routine to follow which made my life and my baby's so much easier. Unlike a lot of other people I really really needed to be told to go and eat a piece of toast at 9.05am every morning. When I got used to the routines and didn't have to keep referring to the book I always forgot to get that piece of toast. What really sold me on the routines was that my baby went to bed at 7pm and slept for a few hours. Previously he had ... more

Advantages Advantages Not partronising and straight forward advice

Disadvantages Disadvantages Aimed slightly more at breastfeeding

Having read The Contented Little Baby Book when I was pregnant with my first child I found it invaluable. It was full of useful hints as well as practical advice on how to get your child into a routine from day one. Simple hints, like make sure you have dark curtains or black out blinds in your nursery so that you baby will not be disturbed by the early morning light and more complex advice like full routines for your baby at each stage of their first year. I did feel that some of the routines were slightly more geared up for the breastfeeding mother but on the whole it was informative and I ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages makes you feel stressed that you're not following the 'right way'

Gina Ford is a very well known baby guru... she has many successful books documenting her baby-rearing techniques. She is renouned for her 'routine' and 'structure' with these being the main focus of her advice. Gina Ford promotes the use of a structured routine to help bringing your children up and making them feel settled and secure. She believes that children need structure and have a routine from week one. Her tips include control crying, where you learn to leave your baby crying until it eventually sleeps. She also tries to emphasise no eye contact during the night so teach the baby not ... more
