Advantages Advantages Good value over time

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive

I joined the mystery and thriller club about 6 months ago. The club offers a selection of horror and murder mystery books at reduced prices. The books are hardback versions of the publications and cost about half the retail price or the same as what you would pay for paperbacks. I have got 2 harback books that do not seem to be available as paperbacks (yet at least). The aims of the club are to bring to the reader the best on offer of horror and mystery thriller (murder) books available at discounted retail prices. The reader benefits from getting hardback books at knockdown prices. Some of ... more

1 Star Quick review of The Mystery & Thriller Club by Theresa9 20/06/2007
My experience with The Mystery and Thriller Club has and is continuing to be an unpleasant and stressful one sadly. I recieved books and contacted them immediately to arrange to return them, nobody arrived to pick them up so I called again and once again nobody arrived. I have now recieved a letter from dept collectors for books that are still in the box and have not been read that I have attempted to send back twice with nobody arriving. It causes me great concern that a company can make demands and cause great upset with seemingly no regard for customers.

Advantages Advantages cheap books, exciting reading

Disadvantages Disadvantages bombarded with leaflets dreadful customer service no-one ever gets back to you

I became a member quite out of the blue! i.e I had never signed up and just received the introductory book through the post! I immediatly phoned the customer services and said I didn't want to join and told them to take my name from their records! They told me to keep the book! I received other letters from them but just shredded them thinking everything was cancelled! OH HOW WRONG I WAS! I then received a letter from a debt company saying I owed them £62.99! the book was only worth £17.99! I wrote back saying I was paying nothing as I hadn't enetered into a membership! They wrote back with ... more

Advantages Advantages Not sure (I didn't hang around long enough to find out)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Get books and statements even when you didn't join

I received a phone call from the 'Mystery and Thriller Club' telling me that as I'd just joined I was entitled to their latest offer. I swiftly explained that I didn't join as I don't even like that kind of book (I'm a chick lit girl at heart) and could I be removed from their lists. The person on the phone said that wouldn't be a problem and I was left thinking I would never hear from them again. However, the very next day I had another phone call from the company and I ended up having the same conversation. I finally thought that was the last of them until this morning when I received a ... more

Advantages Advantages Can get some sheap books

Disadvantages Disadvantages They send you books you dont want

Well, I thought they were ok to start with. Then I received some books that I hadn't asked for. I complained, they said well you didnt return the form to say you didn't want them, so if you dont want them then you'll have to pay for them to be sent back. I have since found the form that they said I should have sent back, and the part I should have filled in was blacked out. So I couldn't have. I have to say though that the books that they sent were mostly hardback, and I found some of the books extremely good value for money, but not always. The website isn't all that good to use either. DO ... more

    Advantages Advantages Initial Offer Great.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You can buy the books cheaper elsewhere.

I joined Mystery and Thriller Club, 2004. I ordered my introductory 5 books for £5.00. Ordered a further 4 boks form them, and then cancelled membership. Book number 4 did not arrive. had to fill out a form for this. Moved house a little later, and 1 year on i am getting letters threatenin to take me to court for an unpaid £140.00. They also claim they never received my non receipt form and I have had to fill out another one of those too. Contacted trading standards, and have sent them a 3rd letter. Trading Standards have told me to give them 21 days to respond or they will take it up. They ... more

Advantages Advantages cheap books (or so you think)

Disadvantages Disadvantages rubbish customer services, do not know how to handle queries

Im really not one to complain but I have just got off the phone with this club for the hundredth time and I am fuming. I used this club initially to help with a course at college which was approximately a year ago. I received the books fine, no problems, 5 for 5p each, paid off. I moved house and told the club of my change of address. I still received post from them etc. One day I received a letter from a debt collection agency saying that I owed approx. £70 to this company. Apparently I had received THREE editors choice books none of this information was printed on my statements. I had not ... more

Advantages Advantages great introductory offers, available online or post

Disadvantages Disadvantages need to remember to choose a book or reject editors choice

Been a member on and off for around two years. The introductory offers are great and once you've fulfilled your committment you can cancel your membership and rejoin usually 6 months later (and choose introductory offer again!!) The committment is usually to choose at least one book from the next 4 club magazines which for an avid book reader of this genre will surely not be a problem. The book prices range from around five pounds to 20 pounds for a set. They have a very good range of offers on leaflets sent with your main club magazine, but you do have to watch as some of these DON'T count ... more

Advantages Advantages fast, cheap, great money saving offers and a good section of books.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I have to confess that I have not had good experiences with bookclubs in the past. However being an avid reader, I still needed to buy my books from somewhere and I did not always have the time or energy to go down the town into all the various bookstores and search. Then six months ago I came across the mystery and thriller bookclub and couldn't believe my luck! As my favourite reads are old crime and mystery classics, it was great to have them all in one place and such a variety as well. As a bonus they were all very cheap with lots of money off compared to highstreet prices. They also have ... more
