    5 Stars LIKE A VIRGIN 27/04/2007

Advantages Advantages The music is quality and it keeps coming

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Commercials

I discovered Virgin about 6 years ago when it was the only station I could get while decorating my newly acquired first home. Eversince it has been the only satation I listen to by choice. Virgin play the music I like, namely guiter based rock by bands new and old. The only downside to some might be that if you listen long enough during the day you will get a sense that some parts of the playlist are repeated. This doesn't bother me as the playlist is excellant with music from the likes of The Stones, Bowie, The Beatles through to contemporary bands and singer songwriters. The station has a ... more

    Advantages Advantages VirginRadio rocks

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cant receive it in the US on broadcast radio

I have been listening to VirginRadio ever since I discovered internet radio, sometime in 1997. We have nothing like it in Los Angeles--radio here is so strictly controlled when it comes to playlists. While Virgin does have a playlist (that ocassionally suffers from heavy rotation), there is room for cool old songs, indie bands and the biggest bands in Britain. Which, by the way, get little play in the US. VirginRadio has introduced me to bands like Travis, Manic Street Preachers, Embrace, Keane and Snow Patrol. Of this list, only Snow Patrol has ever been heard over here. US stations are all ... more

Advantages Advantages Better than Radio 1 for us oldies

Disadvantages Disadvantages They only seem to have 20 songs

I have been listening to Virgin Radio for about 5 years. I'm getting quite cheesed off with it these days. It started out as a refreshing change from the local stations that had far too cheerful presenters and bling, bling music (the sort of music you can imagine Wayne & Colleen enjoying...God help us! The sort of music they used to play at the tacky nightclubs in and around Northampton, where you'de only get up and dance after six or seven bottles of Becks) It was also better than Radio 1, which seems to want to be trendier rather than listenable. It also had Pete & Geoff, and for a while ... more

Advantages Advantages Great songs, all the ones you like

Disadvantages Disadvantages Same songs over and over, Bad reception on analogue radio

This radio station is for people who don't want RnB, Dance, Hiphop and cheesy pop tunes. I listen to Virgin regularly after a friend recommended it to me. I don't know too much about who presents what, but its the first radio station I can listen to without thinking a particular song is rubbish. Virgin is broadcast on 1215AM, which (in my area anyway) is pretty bad quality. In fact if it was just a so-so radio station I would never bother listening on AM. However, they also broadcast nationwide on the internet, sky and digital radio; all of which I make use of. A disadvantage is the songs they ... more

Advantages Advantages No dance or "pop" music

Disadvantages Disadvantages Same songs all the time

I note that it's been a while since a review of this station, so I thought I'd weigh in with an update. THE MUSIC ---------------- Generally Virgin shun "black" music like soul and rap (which is OK because Kiss and 1Xtra shun "white" music like punk and indie) and pop chart fodder. Their philosophy is to play high quality rock and indie and to my mind they are unique in that outlook. Even indie champions XFM play hip hop and underground dance. THE DJs ------------ Current station darlings, Pete and Geoff, carry off the Breakfast Show satisfactorily but you can't help feel it is scripted and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great Music!

Disadvantages Disadvantages In car reception can fade at times

I started listening to Virgin about 6 months ago after getting fed up with the continual chart tripe that Radio 1 kept playing (there’s only so much Steps and Backstreet Boys I can take). A quick flick landed me on 1215 where they were playing Duran Duran’s Reflex, followed by one of my favourite U2 tracks, not a bad start I feel. Since that moment my car radio has been permanently locked into 1215, they play a good mix of new music and classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The DJ’s are great, I couldn’t name any except for Steve Penk who has taken over from Chris Evans on the breakfast slot ... more

Advantages Advantages Indie on the radio!!!!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Reception

Virgin radio is 'virgin' on becoming the greatest radio station ever. Simply because it is the one station in Britain that concentrates on a certain genre of music - indie rock. None of the poppy rubbish or dance trash, get a good listen every night on Virgin 1215AM. I generally listen to Pete anf Jeff in the evenings. They give you classic rock songs, The Jam, The Who, Nirvana, Queen, as well as more up to date indie, like JJ72, Coldplay (ewwww), Stereophonics (liberally), Starsailor, Ocean Colour Scene and so on. This music is backed up by good comedy from P and J, like their celebrity ... more

Advantages Advantages Plays "Real Music", good presenters.

Disadvantages Disadvantages poor reception and adverts

I listen to virgin because... It plays only rock music, "Real music" During the week day it plays "Ten Great Songs in a Row" which is almost an hour with no adverts. The range of music within the station is good, varying from "70's classics" (one per hour)to more modern chart rock. The station does seem to like the Stereophonics slightly too much, but that is only my personal opinion. But if you want a station that will play "Hotel California" by the Eagles and follow it with "Imitation of Life" by R.E.M this is the station. The presenters range from the great; Chris Evans and the team are ... more

Advantages Advantages Good music policy and DJs

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Medium-wave frequency

I don't know where I'd be without the medium wave switch on my stereo. This button is a lifesaver. Switching to 1215 AM offers an easy escape route from the mainstream (some might even say bland) pop music churned out by just about every other station. My musical tastes, I suppose, would fall largely into the 'indie' or 'alternative' categories. In reality, though, I categorise songs into one of two basic lists, 'good' or 'bad', and Virgin Radio's music policy seems to bear a closer relationship to my 'good' list than any other station on the dial. A substantial chunk of its airtime is taken ... more

Advantages Advantages Great music, humourous presenters

Disadvantages Disadvantages Mediumwave so you can't get it on phones and stuff

Virgin Radio may not be for everyone, especially not those of my age(15), but I think it is the best of all the national radio stations, because it plays the best music. Virgin generally plays a lot of indie and light rock tracks, alongside many groovy older tunes, and steers clear of most pop, dance and hip hop stuff, a sort of alternative to Radio One. It also has some really funny and interesting DJs (I really recommend listening to Pete & Geoff's evening show). If you are looking for music radio with good music which is fun to listen to, I definitely recommend this. ... more
