Advantages Advantages So much to gain, while helping many others

Disadvantages Disadvantages "so called volunteers don't get paid" (Homer Simpson)

I have been volunteering for over four years. Which is not bad, considering I originally only intended to stay for a few weeks. I work with the Citizens Advice Bureau, which is a much overlooked volunteering opportunity. Yet it is perfect for anyone who can commit from half a day each week to, almost, a full-time job. Of course, everythings of CAB as having only advisers. This is not the case. Yes, advisers do make up most of the workforce. But there are many other opportunities available. You can also be a receptionist, administrative assistant, social policy campaigner, report writer, or a ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages don't get paid, may be unpleasant people or situations to deal with

ST JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE We are part of an organisation that teaches First Aid, among other things, to people aged 5 plus. Our Division is divided into 3 smaller units, and is called a Quadrilateral Division. {This is because it was originally split into 4 sections with separate sections for Care/Nursing and First Aid and each section was then further split in two according to gender. This no longer applies}.The current 3 sections are: 1. Badgers (for the 5 to 10 year olds who can stay on till 11, to complete Super Badger Award) 2. Cadets (for the 10 to 16 year olds, who can stay on till 18 ... more

Advantages Advantages Great work experience, giving something back to the community, rewarding

Disadvantages Disadvantages May be boring, co-workers may not be very pleasant!

When I was studying for my A-Levels I was thinking about careers and I looked at being a nurse or a midwife. So I applied to my local NHS hospital to do voluntary work hoping this would give me an insight into the role of a midwife. I also needed to pad out my UCAS form a bit! The application process: You need to start by writing/e-mailing/telephoning the Voluntary Services Department at the hospital. The department will usually consist of a manager and a co-ordinator who is there in an administrative support role. You then need to go in for an interview and discuss where you would like to ... more

Advantages Advantages Satisfaction of helping people, rewarding

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Stress, time consuming.

**** Introduction **** Looking for something rewarding (not necessarily paid) and that did not tie me down, I responded to a Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) advert in my local newspaper and arranged an interview. **** Joining CAB and training **** The interview explored mainly whether you could deal with people from all walks or society whatever their background. This was a sort of self examination to see if you could put aside any personal opinions whilst dealing with clients (as CAB calls its customers), There was to be a course of self learning instruction (supported by a training officer) and ... more

Advantages Advantages Get good things from doing it.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be very demanding in sertain areas

I am actually a volunteer at The Citizens Advice Bureau. I have been doing it for 9 months now. The bureau is a charity run centre and they get funding from sources such has the council. When you first join the bureau you go through alot of training as you need to have a fair idea of how the bureau runs and what happens in an interview. The training you go through is theory work such has training packs and question and answer packs. You get training on how to use a benefits calculator this is where you put in the clients income such as wages/benefits and what rent they pay and council tax they ... more

Advantages Advantages Has a long reputable history and you could save somebody’s life

Disadvantages Disadvantages You don't get paid

I am not going to preach to everybody who reads this that I am wonderful because I have been a volunteer for 20 years and most of you have never even volunteered for 20 minutes. I for one am not above criticism so I am usually the last person to dish it out, everybody is entitled to choose their own lifestyles but if you have ever considered volunteering for a charity but as yet have never really decided which one can I point you in the direction of St. John Ambulance. A friend at school started my career in St. John Ambulance and although that person has since left the organisation I continue ... more

Advantages Advantages rewarding, can be fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages long hours, no pay

------------------------- Updates ------------------------- I've neatened up the paragraphs a bit, made it easier to read. Added information about how me + the kids are getting on at the bottom. Added some pictures of kids, mentors and the centre. Also added bit of info on how to become a volunteer. --------------------------------------- Voluntary Work --------------------------------------- Ok, so voluntary work is a very wide area, you could be volunteering at your local sports club or helping build a house in africa. But there's one thing that every volunteer has in common, they go above ... more

Although, I am not a vegetarian, I absolutely love animals. If you share this passion - the thought of becoming a Vet will have crossed your mind at least once in your life. However, for most people this is just a phase, because the idea of helping a cow give birth and then having to eat your lunch afterwards, does not tend to appeal to the average individual. Anyway, as you have probably guessed already, I am one of the exceptions. I have wanted to become a veterinary surgeon, since I was seven years old. Fifteen years later, I am finally getting closer to achieving my life long goal. So ... more

Advantages Advantages The chance to give something back, gain new skills and meet people you might not otherwise

Disadvantages Disadvantages No pay, sometimes long hours, "problem" clients

Don’t worry – this op isn’t going to be a pile of piffle about what a fantastic person I am because I volunteer, or why you’re all a bunch of lazy lay-abouts because you don’t, so please, read on. A UCAS form started it all, or rather the dread of an impending one did. In order to have something impressive to write - along with the fabulous grades, dancing accolades and part time jobs since I was 13, naturally ;-) - I came up with the idea that I should be doing some voluntary work. A quick word in the ear of my mother, who was working for a local charity at the ... more

Advantages Advantages Increases Self-esteem; Benefits the community; A way to get into/back to work

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Unpaid (so what!)

I hate the word volunteer, when referring to volunteering per se. It gives me the impression that any other work is done through coercion and ultimatums. It’s also a very weak word. ‘Volunteer’. Kids volunteer to be monitors at school (no milk, Maggie, no milk!). I might volunteer to cook the meal tonight (If I don’t, I starve!). But ‘volunteering’, as in working for no pay for the benefit of others who could not normally afford your services, has much more impact than that I have already described. Question: Are Category Assistants on Ciao ... more
