Advantages Advantages Very Active, Good resource for newstudents

Disadvantages Disadvantages Seems very primitive in some areas

This site as of today is 432 days old, and counting. (they have a counter to tell you this!) To be honest, this site is how i came to Ciao in the first place. I like this site very much, i've been using it since the early days of when this site started up. Since then, it has always been busy. This site has been under constant development ever since its started. The shop area, where they intend to provied students with deals for laptops, mobiles, holidays, insurance and internet access, doesn't really work very well. I just tried all the links now, and only the laptops link works. It takes you ... more

Advantages Advantages well designed, easy to navigate, great way of meeting people going to the same uni, doing the same course etc, free

Disadvantages Disadvantages lack of auto login, some areas still under development, colour scheme may present problems for some

~ WHATS IS IT? ~ Newstudent.org is a free website aimed at students who will be starting undergraduate courses at University in the coming September (although there are a few members who are in their second year at university and they are great for comforting terrified new students!) It is a way for students to find people who will be going to the same university as them, find people who will be on their course and chat to other new students about general topics and things like thoughts and feelings on going to university. I read a review about the site and seeing as I am going to university ... more

Advantages Advantages Great support mechanism! Very popular, very friendly people on there.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages TOO popular?

I was linked to this site from www.ucas.com, and I went on, due to my building excitement about going to Uni (University of Sussex, should I get my grades) and my thirst for any knowledge that would fuel this excitement. Registration was simple and free, you were given the option of adding up to 6 Universities that you were applying to, and this allowed you to view their forums. Each University has it's own section, with 5 forums. These are: Accommodation Courses Everything Else Fear and Excitement Social Life Within these forums, any other student looking at the University can make topics ... more

    Advantages Advantages good time waster!!!!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages can become addictive!

Well who would have thought it, me, appliying for University, and even more shocking....me, getting an offer at University (wayhay!!!). Im sure, like most people i have found this whole process petrifying and completely alien, it is unlike anything i have ever had to do before. I think it is those dreaded 4 letters UCAS which send a shiver down the spine of any university aplicant! Luckily for us students there is a free website, newstudent.org, which provides us withinvaluable information about the university aplication process, but from a student point of view. Im sure im not the only one ... more

Advantages Advantages Helpful, meet people in similar situation

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes slow running

I have been a member of Newstudent.org from October 2004 after seeing it advertised on the UCAS website after I had received my track number. I found the idea of the website good as it allowed you to discuss issues that other people were having as well as yourself. It was also a place where any doubts could be cleared up. I found it useful in how people who are currently at Uni still post messages on the site and PM people with advice. I liked this aspect because they could give you the low down on the Uni itself and what you wouldn't get to see on interviews or open days whether it be good or ... more

Advantages Advantages an abundance of friends

Disadvantages Disadvantages not that much to do with university

Thanks to NewStudent.org i've managed to make friends with people i'll be going to university with whilst also socialising with many people from my age group which has kept me up to date with the happenings of 17-19 years olds. The range in forums allows users to find discussions on exactly the topics they want and the general topic forum covers every subject you could ever want to talk about. the one downfall is that it seems to be a large group of teenagers chatting and little is said on the topic of university. If the target group applies to you i highly recommend it. like revenge of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Meet future friends! plenty of useful info

Disadvantages Disadvantages Addictive, can be a little slow during peak hours

Newstudent.org is the place to be for students both already at uni and students who are applying. I discovered the website when i was checking ucastrack and saw it as an advertisement. From my own experience, it has helped me not only to decide what university is best for me but also has allowed me to meet new friends. This all helps to lessen the fear of beginning uni as you realise that you won’t be on your own! Newstudent helps you to do this. It has plenty of features and is improving as time progresses: Profiles: This allows you to make your own personal profile telling the rest of the ... more

Advantages Advantages A brilliant place for new students to meet (hence the name newstudent)

Disadvantages Disadvantages The odd idiot here and there

I'm a little bias because I've been on newstudent since around July 2004. However, it's a great little community on the net and it's much the same as you would find at university - everyone meeting for the first time (even if it is monitor to monitor) and starting conversations, being friendly and helping each other out. The general forum is there to get to know everyone properly and there are other forums for the individual universities, which I think is fantastic. You get to meet people going to the same university and to others across the country, people doing the same course as you and ... more

Advantages Advantages Good communiction link to other uni students

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow at bust times

Newstudent. org addictive yes but also very useful for people like me, prospective students! When you join you get to choose up to 6 universities of your choice. Then within these you can write about things like accomodation, applying, excitment etc. it really can be very useful at times! Like i want to go to Cardiff (if i ever get the grades) and its told me so real good insights into the uni, that i just couldnt get from anywhere else. Aswell as uni stuff you also get some of the most randomist thread (thats what posts are called ever, including a thread which actaully told me bout this ... more

Advantages Advantages Great place to meet people

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slow

Since October when my friend first told me about this website i have been addicted. As soon as i go online i have to log on to see whether there is anything interesting about my firm choice uni (Loughborough) or just in general what people have to say. The website is aimed mainly at people who have applied to uni and deciding on their choices, although mainy students who are now at uni still visit the website regularly. It is easy to register, just takes a few minutes of your time, which is nothing compared to the amount of time you will actually spend on the website once you are registered ... more
