Catherine Cookson - A Dinner of Herbs
Review of A Dinner of Herbs - Catherine Cookson by
yummy.mummy
Advantages: Another great Cookson Novel
Disadvantages: none
...creates when pen meets paper.
A tale of hardship, poverty and children that are thrust into adulthood without a thought in the world. Cookson introduces us to new characters: Roddy Greenbank, a boy whose family is torn apart and he is suddenly an orphan in the world with amnesia following appalling circumstances, Mary Ellen, a spirited girl who is enraptured by Roddy and follows him like a long shadow on a summers day. Finally we meet Hal, the quiet ... ...with a silent tongue but a heavy fist.
Following these three children growing up long before their time in an era where children are the providers for a home, you can help but being drawn in.
Its definitely a book I would recommend to any Catherine Cookson fans - it has characters that draw you in and puts in fine details the struggle of the lower and middle class families. It is also a longer book than some of her others - though it certainly ...

Catherine Cookson - A Ruthless Need
Review of A Ruthless Need - Catherine Cookson by
yummy.mummy
Advantages: A literary accreditation to Non Fiction
Disadvantages: The only disadvantage is if you havent yet read it
Catherine Cookson's Literary skills are a force to be reckoned with. This book encompasses everything you would expect from an author who speaks of lower class degredation as if she has tasted it herself time and time again. Lizzie Gillespie is a character that draws you in, making you feel her anguish and embrace her small successes. When Lizzie is rescued from a step mother who too is too eager to sacrifice her youth and innocence, it appears that ... ...family home and makes her a companion of his mother before leaving for war. Bill The perfect man
Review of Bill Bailey: An Omnibus - Catherine Cookson by
busy
Advantages: Light and entertaining
Disadvantages: A little unreal
...they are very unbelievable because Bill Bailey is every woman's dream man. He is handsome, strong, protective, gentlemanly etc. He is too good to be true. Do any of us know a man that perfect?
There were parts in these novels when I did find myself getting emotional and I would also say the books are hard to put down.
Before reading these series of books I would have considered Catherine Cookson's books to be a bit like Mills and Boon but I have ...

A riveting read....
Review of Colour Blind - Catherine Cookson by
babajane32
Advantages: Captivating
Disadvantages: Can not put it down
...Colour Blind was written in 1953,and as often her work does, tackles issues of unemployment and class at the time.It also tackles the sensative issue of colour, and in this makes this book somewhat more unusual than some of her later work.
The story -
