DLT backup drive
Review of Compaq DLT Drive 3570 35 GB 70 GB by
stelladrinker
Advantages: easy to use, very robust, major storage capabilities
Disadvantages: tape headers tend to break off, pricey to buy new
the tape drive is a pleasure to use, it gives good reliable backups at tremendous speeds and is excellent for restores. Usually only ever used in major company servers I have found you can pick up a second hand one very cheap indeed. I use it on my home system because cd\dvd backups still dont have major capacity like a tape unit.
Tapes are cheap to buy also and you can reuse them about 30 times before needing to replace them. What I have found ...

Back me right up!
Review of HP StorageWorks DLT VS 80 40 GB 80 GB by
andycharger
Advantages: Reliable, efficient data storage. Good compatibility
Disadvantages: Noisy, capacity not the greatest, speed.
...have here at work. The HP DLT VS80 tape drives.
Where does it fit in your network Andy?
Well, the VS80 is what is known as an internal SCSI device. Basically it is bolted into a server and appears in the same format and size as your typical CD/DVD Rom drives in your PCs. So it fits nicely into the 5.25 Inch Drive bays of most servers or PCs. The front of the Tape Drive is detachable and comes with both a beige and black front so you can "colour ... ...software Andy?
Again, faultless. While HP do their own flavours of backup software, we use a product by Symantec called Backup exec. We originally had version 8.0 and are now running Version 10.0 The upgrade caused no issues with compatibility and the drives worked equally as well with both versions. Backup exec allows you to use the drive to its full potential so you can schedule backup jobs, perform data restores, etc.
A great accompanying product ...

Spectra Logic T50-Move along, save some money.
Review of Spectra Logic Spectra T50 400 GB 800 GB by
J0stens_WS
Advantages: Large Capacity, blazing fast.
Disadvantages: Poor quality, breaks at the blink of an eye, fragile, sloppy manufacture
We transitioned to Spectra Logic drives in March of 2006. It is January of 2007, and we have had to have both units replaced 3 times, the longest one lasted was 6 months, the shortest one lasted was 6 hours. They will overnite you a new unit, but that does not solve the quality issue. 6 of sh*t is sh*t. Woe unto you if your tape drive "white screen" dies.. You have to disassemble the top of the unit, attach a 3/16 socket to a motor plate, and manually ...

Up and Running in under a minute !!!
Review of HP StorageWorks DAT 72 USB Internal Tape Drive 36 GB 72 GB by
richrobuk
Advantages: Up and running in under a minute
Disadvantages: Not the fastest, (but then what do you expect)
...could not be easier.
The HP family of DAT (DDS) drives is now in to it's 5th generation, and the reliability and performance has grown with each new model.
The big disadvantage of the previous offerings was the need to invest in costly SCSI cards and cables, but this fabulous product very cleverly brings an industry standard product in to the reach of the serious home user and small business user.
If you have ever suffered a system crash and lost ... ...feeling of realising you've lost everything, and that sense of "Why didn't I back it up?"...... Well no more excuses, not only does this drive provide a simple to use backup solution, but it also features HPs unique "One Button Disaster Recovery" or OBDR. As the name suggests, if you loose you system (disk crash etc) you can recover the whole thing from tape by pressing just one button. How does it work? You simply load the back up tape in to the ...

Between DLT and SDLT - 80 - 160GB Backup
Review of Quantum DLT VS160 80 GB 160 GB by
davidbarnes82
Advantages: Fast, reliable, Good Price
Disadvantages: No SCSI cable included, Not Great instructions
...It was delivered direct from Quantum within a week.
The one problem I had was - no SCSI cable which really annoys me when it's a SCSI device. If i didn't have a mass collection of the damn things, I would have had to go out and buy one. The instructions were not great, although anybody installing such a device would probably have enough knowledge.
It's been in use a while now - no problems, no hardware conflicts, nothing. Everything is running ...
