The new NHS Direct website at www.nhs.direct.uk has a simple blue and white user interface that is easy and quick to download. It's available 24/7 with telephone contact on 0845 4647.
***THE FRONT PAGE***
The frontpage has a NHS direct search engine, which can be used for most enquiries. The bottom tool bar has 4 categories these are as follows:

Advantages: Informative advice, good reference source. Disadvantages: Definately not for use in an emergency.

On one hand, there is the person who insists on being seen straight away with the slightest ailment. In contrast to this there are people who ignore potentially life threatening symptoms because they don’t want to be a nuisance or, quite commonly, are scared to take the time ... ...Online is designed to help people who have diagnosed conditions. It is packed full of useful information on how, where and when to get the best treatment on the NHS.
It has helpful advice for all minor ailments and will tell you when to see the doctor and how urgent the problem is without causing undue concern.
The home page has links to all the different sections and lists “Hot Topics” which are items discussed in the news at the moment. Topics ...

Advantages: Comprehensive, Nicely set out, Easy to access information Disadvantages: Supermarket for Hypochondriacs
I popped into my Doctor’s surgery last week to pick up a prescription and while I was waiting I browsed through the masses of literature they had on display. You know the sort of thing ‘How to give up smoking’, ‘How to reduce your blood pressure’, ‘How to stop worrying about all the ailments you’ll never get.’ Pretty morbid stuff really, I came out of there quite depressed, feeling I should have made ... ...I had some plague or other. In amongst the leaflets I’d picked up for more detailed scrutiny in the comfort of my own home, I came across a business card advertising the NHS Direct web site. Seeing as I was already in hypochondriac mode I decided to have a look and this is what I found. Thank God for the NHS direct line. Some people do approve of it, some don’t. I do! As many of you may know I have many health problems, some of which I have to take medication for, so now let me take you into my world for a minute as I tell you my tale…
I used to be quite a calm person, not brilliant I admit, but nonetheless, calm! The hospital where I worked decided to send me on a four-day intensive first aid course! That week consisted ... ...I’d have a bit to eat and maybe a few winks of sleep! My point? Simply to show that I have not always been so paranoid, so panicky! Now let me take you back to the year of 2001, One morning towards the latter part of the year I got up out of bed, and after my ablutions were complete, I raced down stairs (okay not raced). Last Friday, was my birthday and I had rather a different start to the day.
Just after Midnight Adam, our 4 year old, woke up after going to bed perfectly well, woke up sounding like he had croup. Now the only thing I really know about croup is that you can sometimes put them in a steamy room to ease their breathing, but in a bathroom our size, it would take a long while to steam it up. As Adam was trying to breath, he was making a noise like a ... ...but his chest was rising fast and his lungs were having to work extremely hard. The longer this was happening, the more he was panicking and the worse he was becoming. I gave him calpol in case of fever and tucked him in our bed with my husband who was calming him down and went downstairs to consult my Dorling Kindersley Children's Medical Book.
