When your child develops a rash, its every parents natural instinct to worry. So when my 6 month old daughter developed a patchy red rash all over her body, i took her straight to the doctors. Luckily it turned out to be eczema, but even this can cause serious discomfort to an adult, let alone a young child.
This was when the doctor recommended Oilatum Juniorbath formula. I was already familiar with the Oilatum range, as i had used the adult version myself a few years earlier. So, after the appointment, i went straight to Boots and bought a 300ml bottle for £8.99 (take note that it does come in a variety of sizes). Yes, this is a little expensive, but hey,
wouldnt we all pay the earth for our childrens well being?
PRODUCT INFORMATION:
The key ingredient in this forumla is liquid parrafin, which acts as an barrier to prevent moisture loss from the skin, as well as to protect and soothe any irritation. It also has the ability to re-hydrate the skin whilst stopping it from drying out any further. And at this, it most definitely succeeds.
There are two ways in which you can use this product. Firstly by adding it directly to your childs bath water. For an infant bath, it is recommended that you use one half to two capfuls of product in a small bath, depending on the severity of the dry skin. This should turn the bath water a light milky colour! Once the water has been swilled to make sure it is mixed in sufficiently, it can then be patted on to the skin using a soft cloth. However, if you are making up the solution in a standard sized bath, the instructions stae to use between one and three capfuls to an eight inch bath. I dont know about you, but i dont tend to measure the deepness of the bath water, so dont worry about being exact - its only a guideline! It is the recommended to let the child soak for between 10 and 20 minutes. I did attempt to do this, but keeping a baby still for that amount of time is very hard work - you may need a long soak afterwards to to chill out! Alternatively, you can use this product as a skin cleanser, applying it directly to the affected area and then rinsing thoroughly. However you apply it, there is no need to use soap, as this will dry the skin anyway. Oilatum cleases the skin and hair so no other products are needed - it even works wonders for cradle cap!!!
DOES IT WORK?
In my opinion, yes. It even gave me extremely soft hands (which was amazing as months of sterilising solution had toughend and dried my hands something chronic! Even after the first use, i noticed my lil girls skin was so much softer, and after a few uses the eczema disappeared completely. However, with children where the condition is quite severe, this may not work sufficiently by itself. In this circumstances, a cream or lotion may be needed. One problem i did have was that, when i stopped using the bath formula for a few days, the dry skin began to appear again - for this reason, i use this religiously every night in my childs bath.
DISADVANTAGES:
Firstly, the liquid parrafin casues the bath to become very slippery, so it is very important to use a bath mat and support your child at all times. Als make sure that you rinse out the bath afterwards, especially if you plan to use it later - i have onmany occasions nearly cracked my head open slipping becasue i didnt wash it out properly - let that be a warning to you all!!! The bottle itself can also become very slippery, and can leave parrafin residue all over the shelf - for this reason i've started standing it in an old tupperware box!
The main disadvantage is the price. Especially when - if like me you are using three capfuls a day - you are spending £9 a week! Ok, yes it may be worth it so your child doesnt suffer, but this can be hard if you are trying to save money. For this reason, i asked my doctor to give it to me on a repeat prescription, and as its for a child, you dont have to pay a penny. This is definitely better if you need to use is frequently.
In conclusion, Oilatum Junior bath solution is a must for any child with eczema or dry skin - or any parent for that matter!!!
