phpBB: Build and run your own messageboard

Advantages: Easy to use, well supported, free
Disadvantages: Spammers, some minor quirks

...then the support forums at phpBB.com will surely yield a response. Once you have the basic system up and running (which should take only a few minutes barring any problems) then you're ready to create the actual message board, complete with administrators, moderators and forums.

Setting up the message board is something that is a lot easier if you've done a little preparation beforehand. I certainly found that the initial setup work ...
...it's advisable to check on phpBB.com first to see those that are used by other board owners. Styles (or templates) offer you the chance to personalise your own board further with new colour schemes and minor changes to the layout and can sometimes be an attractive alternative to the default style, subSilver. Your own art skills can be put to good use and there's functionality there to allow you to use your own logo, if you have one or know someone ... more

phpBB For Me

Advantages: Very clear and easy to use - It's free!
Disadvantages: None that I can see!

I first began writing this review as a review of the product and not the actual website. I’ve since thought about it and realised that the product (on Ciao) is the website and not what the site is “selling” if that makes sense? Anyway, enough of my twittering; what is this site all about? It’s a front for advertising and supporting a product called phpBB. What’s that I hear you ask? Well the site can explain that one better than I ever can so here ...
...customizable Open Source bulletin board package. phpBB has a user-friendly interface, simple and straightforward administration panel, and helpful FAQ. Based on the powerful PHP server language and your choice of MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC database servers, phpBB is the ideal free community solution for all web sites.” I know that it probably doesn’t make a huge amount of sense to a huge number of people so I will try to relay that ...

Easy building of Online communities

Advantages: Powerful forum has automated set up for Mysql 3 & 4
Disadvantages: None as yet

Recently I downloaded PhpBB from www.phpbb.com. This is a selection of php scripts that allow you to run a forum on your web site. To install it you need a decent server that allows you access to either a Mysql, Mssql PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC database. All the files are contained in a fairly small zip file (circa 1/2 meg in zip format, also available in gz, or bz2 format). Once unzipped it took all of about ½ minutes to read the “readme” file which ...
...the files on your server, and ran the installation script, filling out the blanks where necessary (not too many difficult questions here). Maybe I did something wrong, but on my first try I the database tables did not set up, although this was easily rectified by locating the necessary sql and running it through Phpadmin. However I re-installed it from fresh and it worked without hiccup. Once installed there is a decent control panel to allow you ...

Not as unsecure as people say...

Advantages: Big userbase, free, easy to manage and secure
Disadvantages: Bad reputation and a target by hackers and spammers because of the huge userbase phpBB has

phpBB is a very popular widely used forum software that has millions of installation all over the internet. phpBB has had a bad reputation for quite a few years as many people always think of phpBB being un-secure and not safe to use. Because of that people tend to not use it and go on to use other forum software solution like SMF, Invision Power Board (IPB) and vBulletin. The reason why phpBB has this bad reputation is because of a massive security ...
...hundreds of phpBB2 forums were exploited. Because of this people always assume phpBB is unsafe. phpBB was built and made in the days were security wasn't as much of a problem and hacking were rare. The internet and the way people use it has changed rapidly since the time phpBB2 was made which was back in April 2002. Nowadays people set out to hack and cause damage and even code bots to crawl the internet to hack and find exploits. phpBB's newest ...
