In my opinion Postalgold.com appear to be of the latter genre. Mrs. F-B saw the television advertisement, and duly contacted the freephone number to order a "Gold Kit". The kit arrived on our doorstep a day or so later. Mrs. F-B then began rummaging through cupboards and jewellery boxes. Eventually she had found gold weighing approximately 70 - 80 grams of varying carats, some 9 and some 18 all mixed in. Now Mrs. F-B is in no way ... ...both said we`d see what Postalgold.com come back with.
Mrs. F-B then sent this off in the post..........and waited............and waited.............and waited. Eventually after more than 10 days, I decided to check whether or not they had received our consignment. They Hadn`t, it was at a P.O Box address awaiting collection. We decided to contact Postalgold.com and find out what the delay was. On ringing the freephone number, we were ... more
I`m fully aware that in this time of recession the purse strings can potentially be stretched to their limits. Not everyone has an endless supply of wonga at their disposal. This gives rise to certain unscrupulous charlatans that like to capitalise on the financial misfortunes of others. Sometimes they manifest themselves as just common or garden conmen or as loan sharks, and in other instances even set up companies and have convincing if not slightly tacky television adverts with which to purvey their own brand of schadenfreude.
Now Mrs. F-B is in no way naive, and in most cases is a far sharper cookie then I could ever aspire to be. However I did say to her I thought she would be better off selling to a local company rather than doing it this way, but after a brief discussion we both said we`d see what Postalgold.com come back with.
On ringing the freephone number, we were told that it was "currently unavailable" on several occasions. After much perseverence we eventually got through and were told that due to action by postal workers in London, it had effectively delayed their process, however we were assured that the cheque would be received within the next 24 - 48 hours.
Checking the gold prices online, I fully expected to get somewhere in the region of £6.00 - £6.20 per gram for 9 carat and £13.00 - £13.25 for 18 carat. Even in the worst case scenario, we expected for our 70 odd grams a total in excess of £400.00 So 48 hours later the cheque landed on our mat. A cheque for............................................................£159 and some odd pence. This was just over one third of the price we would have been offered by a local scrap metal merchant. Mrs. F-B went ballistic ! She telephoned Postalgold.com, spoke to the same lady again and asked her what was the meaning of this paltry sum ? She was then told that the price of gold constantly fluctuates, and that this was the price at the time her scrap bits were assessed. So the price of gold had dropped by £4.00 per gram in the space of 24 hours ?...............yeah right ! Mrs. F-B then asked why was there no receipt stating exactly what carats and weights were contained within her "Gold Kit". Any bona-fide scrap merchant will give you a receipt showing the details / true weights and price etc. The reply was that they don`t issue receipts. I don`t think it even warrants a comment. Hoist by their own petard methinks.
Mrs. F-B had them on the rack. The lady at Postalgold.com then asked us to hold the line whilst she had a word with the manager. Well clearly a minor miracle had occurred, as after roughly 30 seconds we were instantly offered an extra £80.00. I wonder how that became possible all of a sudden ? Needless to say Mrs. F-B refused, as it was still roughly half of it`s true worth. Postalgold.com have said that as we are returning their cheque, it will take them up to 30 days to return our gold.
The bottom line in all this is if you want top dollar for any scrap gold, then go to a specialist scrap metal merchant, a jeweller that buys scrap gold (there`s always one on your local high street), or if push really does come to shove, a pawnbroker.
After reading a review on this website about Postal Gold I decided to take a look, I had lots of jewelry that was either broken or I just didn't wear it any more so I thought this site sounded like a good way of getting a bit of extra cash. The website is www.postalgold.com, it's very straight forward to navigate around and it pretty much tells you all you need to know. Basically they are a company who pay you for unwanted gold (they do not payout ... ...silver. All you need to do is request the postal kit by filling in the short form on the right hand side of the web page and then wait for you kit to arrive (mine came the next day). In the kit you get two envelopes, one is padded for the jewelry to go into and the other is a pre paid Royal Mail envelope, you put whatever jewelry you want to cash in (does not matter if its broken) into the padded envelope, you need to make sure the details are correct, ...
