I have heard it said that the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, written by Roald Dahl was meant to be a horror story for children. I am not sure about that although I have always thought Dahl's books to be a bit dark. The other word to describe his books is creepy.

The other location was sets based in Bavaria Filmstudios, Geiselgasteig, Grünwald, Bavaria, Germany. Charlie and the chocolate factory staring Johnny Depp has many locations, but chiefly Pinewood studios UK and Gengenbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
There are two version of this film. The 1971 version, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (starring Gene Wilder) was filmed in various parts of Bavaria, in Germany. The 2005 version, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (starring Johnny Depp) was mostly filmed in the UK, but locations in the US and Germany were also used.
According to IMDB.com the following locations were used: 007 stage at Pinewood studios, Compair factory, High Wycombe, York,Hatfield House, Herts; London, Pinewood studios all in England. Buford, Georgia - USA, and
Gengenbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. So I would assume that it was one of those, no mention of Moscow I'm afraid :)
