I first came across sonic .net at the website of another ciao member, so anyone wishing to try it out can access it from www.the-slipstream.co.uk. I was so impressed with the radio station this inspired me to have a bash at it myself.
It is easy enough to do, although to get it anything like as you want it, will take a little time and effort, the database of artists is vast and you need to pick through them all and select only the ones you want, there is no facility to choose just certain songs by an artist so the tracks you get will vary. You can however sway the artists play list slightly by rating them on a scale of 1-5,this means that the higher you go the more this favourite artist will play in comparison to others.
The radio station itself can be called whatever you want, again ideal for your website, and runs in its very own pop up box quite happily in the background as you work.
You get the Artist and track shown as it plays, plus the actual picture of the CD it comes from. Not like a track, well then that’s not a problem, just skip to the next one with ease! The controls also offer play, pause and skip as well as its own volume control.
Other stations are accessible too from your station so you can check out others, plus celebrity broadcasts and stations too, plus news of upcoming events. You can also follow through on each artist playing, this allows you to purchase CD’s or get a profile and information of each artist playing.
Sounds too good to be true? Well there are a couple of drawbacks but these are only minor, one is that in-between every few tracks you will get a voice advert, usually for American interest more than ours, but they don’t last long.
Then if you hit peak time there is the possibility of buffering problems that will slow or halt your radio station. However as I said these are minor and As for the quality I have found it to be pretty good at most times of the day and the adverts are not too much of a distraction.
Anyone who spends a lot of time on the internet or likes these radio stations will find sonic net a great toy to play with, there is something inspiring about seeing the station with your personal name or site at the top of it and knowing you created it. Anyone who has a little spare time will find this easy and fun to do, so I recommend you have a bash.
