So I decided to take the plunge and give home shopping a go - my partner is the only driver and away for two weeks so I thought home shopping would be cheaper than a bus there and taxi back.
I originally chose tesco's but had real trouble registering and it wouldn't delivery to my home address - kept saying it was business premises???
So I gave up on them and choose sainsburys instead.
THE WEBSITE: It was very easy to register and link my nectarcard and debit card, and the whole process of registering took less than 5 minutes.
Once on the grocerys online part of the site it is all very clear and nicely split into categories: Fresh food, Bakery, Food Cupboard, Frozen, Off Licence, Drinks, Health and Beauty, Baby, Household, Petshop, Newsagent and Summer. (Compared to Asda - there is much more of a selection available. Compared to Tesco - much easier to navigate and sign up to.)
You are prompted immediately to pick a delivery slot - and that slot is then held back and reserved for up to 2 hours whilst you shop. You can choose to pick your delivery slot later but I thought it was a good idea. The delivery prices varied from £3.50 to £6. With free delivery on orders over £100 if delivered on Tues, Weds or Thurs. The delivery slots are easy to choose all set out on a big grid with days of the week across the top, times coming down and each slot showing the price.
So after the shopping which took about 30-40 minutes with me popping to the cupboard or freezer just to check if I needed something, I entered my card details and awaited delivery.
THE DELIVERY: My delivery turned up on time, I even had a phone call to see if I wanted it early - which I didn't this time as I was out - but thats a nice extra bit of customer service. The delivery man carried it all into my kitchen for me and even wiped his feet on the door mat without being asked - my partner can't even manage that.
SUBSTITUTIONS: He clearly explained the substitutions that had been made on my order, which for convenience are put into different colour bags from the rest of the order. The substitutions were quite adequate - Chat magazine for thats Life and Cherry tomatoes for Salad tomatoes. I had heard horror stories about weird substitutions being made like babies nappys for wet wipes etc...If I had been unhappy with the substitutes the driver would take them away again and I would get refunded within 7 days. I then signed for it and off he went.
OVERALL OPINION: Well their prices weren't too much different to tesco's and taking into account the petrol and little extra's I would have popped into the trolley I probably saved money even with the delivery charge.
It was nice shopping with a cup of tea and a comfy chair and being able to go and check to see if I actually needed something was good and probably saved me from doubling up on things.
It was packed just the way I pack it myself - fridge in one, freezer in another, soft stuff and tins etc.. so nothing was damaged and it was easy to put away.
Since my first shop online I have had e-mails with money off vouchers to be used for online shops such as £7.50 off a £50 shop before a certain date etc.. at a rate of about 2 a month, which is great.
My nectar points have racked up really quickly and I have had enough over the last couple shops for FREE rentals at blockbusters.
I have shopped online with sainsburys about 12 times now and have had no problems at all - the deliveries are always on time and the substitutions are fine, the drivers are polite and the quality of the stock is as good as picking from the shelves yourself, I have had no problems with getting shorter life items such as bread going off after a day or cucumber within a day of it's sell by date etc...
Really very impressed and am an online shopping convert - no negatives from me at all - very pleasant and easy experience.
