Hilton Dahab - good 5* hotel with nice beach and lagoon
Advantages: Luxurious, watersports, great lagoon, good food
Disadvantages: Extra food and drinks expensive, no snorkelling in lagoon
...The Hilton Dahab is a fairly green hotel spread across the Dahab coastline. There is a nice golden sand beach, although it is too hot to walk on without shoes in summer, so I would recommend buying some beach/swimming shoes from the hotel shop. The lagoon in lovely for swimming and very walm, although there is little in terms of marine life. There is a dive centre (sinai divers) which can arrange diving and snorkelling trips and courses.
We were on Half board, which was a good deal as you could have a pizza or snack for lunch on the beach (expensive)! The breakfasts are hilton standards (fantastic) and the buffet dinners are also good.
There is a games room with billiards and table tennis which you can hire.
The rooms are in blocks, and are very comfortable, as you would expect from a 5* hotel. There may be an amount of walking to...

Windsurfing and diving in the Red Sea at Dahab
Advantages: Touch of luxury
Disadvantages: Busy hotel with lots of guests
...I wish I had stayed here!
I stayed next door at the Ganet Saini, that was a very basic hotel. My friends were here and I liked it much better. It has a touch of luxury.
The rooms are spacious, and the beds a big and quite comfortable. It is clean and tidy and has everything you need. On arrival there was a bowl of fruit waiting. The room was cleaned daily, usually in the afternoon (unlike next door where they wake you up to come in!)
The food was excellent, good variety and prepared with care. I ate there several nights with my friends. There is a huge buffet and considering you are in the dessert, supplies seemed plentiful.
The location is good too, you are on the beach, there are a few shops in the hotels locally and a short taxi ride (costing 10LE or £1) takes you to Dahab its self.
Dahab is famous...

Egypts Gold Coast
Advantages: a beautiful coastal region and great diving
Disadvantages: none
...The Blue Hole at Dahab is a name that is probably better known to divers than it is to the casual tourist, but the waters here and the whole coastal region has a lot to offer to diver and non-diver alike. Geographically Dahab is found about half way down the east coast of Egypt's Sinai peninsular its waters being part of the Gulf of Aqaba that forms the top of the Red Sea. Dahab is a town that evolved from a mixture of Bedouin groups, Israeli settlers and western travellers, many drawn here to experience the beauty and fun of the water activities that are so suited to this calm stretch of water. There is more here than just the hole here so I will provide a breakdown of what's on offer.
The Town
The town itself is not much to look at as you approach from the desert highway that runs the length of the coast from Taba and Eilat in...

Blue Hole
Advantages: Amazing sea life, beautiful sunshine, variety of activities
Disadvantages: Jagged rocks, quite busy
...I've travelled to Dahab several times in the last year, but it was not until my last visit that I ventured to Blue Hole. This is for a combination of reasons, firstly because it has a bit of a reputation, quite a few divers have died here, as apparently it is quite a dangerous place to dive. I think however if you go with the right dive company and don't take any real risks you'll be perfectly safe.
If you book when you are in Dahab (rather than Sharm as they tend to rip you off here) you will find that you can get a trip for around 5 English pounds that will take you from Dahab to the site, a short journey of around 20 mins. It's definitely worth a visit, but I would say not particularly child friendly as getting in and out of the water is challenging as there are some jagged rocks!...

Sharm el Sheikh, different, cheap
Advantages: sun, coral, hotels, value
Disadvantages: none
...There are now several charters a week to Sharm costing about £230.Try Explorers Tours for 7, 10, 11, 14 night deals. If you take a taxi from the airport to Sharm el Maya, which would cost about £5 you can find good, clean hotels with a/c, fridge, TV, en suite, pool etc for about £20 a night. It's an amazing building site but head for the beach and sea and you cannot go wrong! Best beach for peace, snorkelling etc is near the airport Ras Nsrani. You can pay to use facilities and the reef here is the best I've found in Egypt. Catch a bus or hire a car through the spectacular mountains to Dahab - for camel trecks, diving, beach parties and then head for the spectacular beaches and scenery at Nuweiba. Go to the Egypt Tourist site on the web, find a travel agent in Cairo to book hotel rooms - much cheaper and more fun to tailor-make your...

Backpacking in Egypt
Advantages: Cheap, amazing things to see
Disadvantages: Hassle factor
...I spent 5 weeks in Egypt a couple of years ago. We did more or less the standard route, getting off the beaten track a little. Cairo - Alexandria - Siwa - Farafra - Luxor - Aswan - Abu Simbel - Hurghurda - Dahab.
Egypt is not just all about the pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, although these are obviously not to be missed.
I highly recommend going east. From Alexandria on the Med, you can go south to Siwa, which is an oasis town in the middle of the desert near the Libyan border, where donkeys remain the main form of transportation. The people here still live a traditional lifestyle. Women are fully covered from head to toe, and apparently do not speak to any man other than family until they are married (including the husband to be!)
It is becoming quite touristy now but you do have to be reasonably dedicated to...

Taba Heights in September
Advantages: Sun, sand and snorkelling
Disadvantages: Not the place for lovers of shopping & entertainment
...we did do a day trip to Dahab, which was really interesting. Seeing the developing coastline and the desert was a treat in itself, the stop at a Bedouin 'motorway cafe' was surreal, and Dahab itself was a mad hippy surfer enclave where kite surfing Aussies were to be found next to Egyptian women beating carpets in the sea. I even saw a cat eating a courgette with some gusto! Dahab's also a bit of 'real Egypt' set in a militarised tourist ghetto, and great for shopping.
A final note. I was really proud of the Brits on holiday. The middle easterners there, both middle class Arabs and Israelis, were pretty rude to the hotel staff where they could be bothered to notice them at all. The Italians weren't much better. The Brits, on the other hand, were polite, friendly, charming and cultured, and in a volatile part of the world, that...

Hilton Sharm Dreams, Sharm el Sheik
Advantages: Location - short stroll into Na'ama Bay. Good swimming pools
Disadvantages: Poor service, expensive food and drink
...We stayed at the Hilton Sharm Dreams in Sharm el Sheik in September 07 for 7 nights. Overall the stay was pleasant, but I think that if I returned to Sharm el Sheik then I would try a different hotel (we have stayed at the Hilton in Dahab and the Intercontinental in Hurghada, both of which I preferred to this hotel)
On arrival at the hotel, check in was relatively painless. The rooms themselves were fine, although not as luxurious as some other 5 star Egyptian hotels I have stayed in. They were quite large and we had a terrace with a table and chairs and also a table and chairs inside the room.
The bathroom was adequate and quite clean, although again, not fantastic. After using up the toiletries within the room, we had to wait a number of days for these to be refreshed and even then we didn't get a full selection (which I...
