...BACKGROUND: My husband and I were visiting friends in northern Bavaria last summer, and decided it would be quickest to drive down from Frankfurt. I've visited Frankfurt on several occasions in recent years, usually for the International Book Fair, and whilst I have no complaints about the city itself, I've generally no real inclination to linger there any longer than necessary. My husband, however, had never been to Frankfurt before, so we decided to break our trip and spend a night in the city en route. Review of National Hotel, Frankfurt am Main

Best Western Plaza Hotel, Frankfurt

Advantages: Central and reasonably priced
Disadvantages: far too much choice at breakfast.

...We stayed in The Best Western Frankfurt Plaza in July 2006 as part of our fabulous summer holiday in Austria and Germany. Not having booked any of the trip I was pleasantly surprised at this hotel in Frankfurt. I was even more pleased due to the rather grotty hostel we had just frequented in Innsbruck, Austria. Anything would have been better than that! Review coming soon. The hotel is a three star and has forty five rooms all easily accessible by a lift in the main reception. *~*~Location*~*~ The plaza is located on Esslinger Strasse which is about a ten minute walk from hauptbanhof - the main train station in Frankfurt. The Movenpick Hotel, Frankfurt (Oberursel).

Advantages: Quality Medium Size Friendly Hotel some 20 miles from Frankfurt City centre in the vicinity of Oberursel, Hessen.
Disadvantages: Distance from Frankfurt City though S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections are within short distance.

...Have visited this Hotel on more than one occasion as a non-resident and also stayed for a few days as a resident. The Hotel is located circa 20 miles from Frankfurt City and is easily reached by autobahn and other roads from the City and also the Flughafen. There are local stations for the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn a modest walking distance from the hotel providing half hourly train service to Frankfurt, Hauptbahnof and other main City points. Travelling time varies according to destination but 25/30 minutes would be likely to the City centre and main station. The S-Bahn line S5 connects at the Main Station with lines S8 and S9 providing fast connection direct into the Airport internal station with an overall journey time of approx 40 minutes. Disadvantages: Only German TV!!

Frankfurt in the middle of nowhere airport

Advantages: Fast and efficient with lots of cheap connections
Disadvantages: Silly location, might as well put it in Luxembourg

Frankfurt Hahn accepts all the budget traffic for Franfkurt but it's also one of the cheapest and well-connected budget airlines in Germany, so it sees people from all over the country heading there. I flew in from Warsaw on a very cold morning, the weather was around -20 when leaving Poland and it took a while to de-ice the plane. On the other HAHN, it's not Frankfurt

Advantages: Friendly, clean and efficient
Disadvantages: The name might be misleading

...NOT zip up the back. It costs me just about as much in petrol to drive the 60 miles or so to Prestwick Airport than it does to fly to Germany. But I digress. Where was I? Or, to be more accurate, where is IT? Contrary to the impression given by it's name, this airport is NOT in Frankfurt. It's actually getting on for 70 miles south-west of the city. It's situated in the region of Rhineland called Hunsrück. What? You're not familiar with the geography of the region? It's slap bang in the middle of a finger of land just south of where the rivers Mösel and Rhine join forces at Koblenz. No? Oh for goodness sake, just go to mapquest.com It's reasonably well situated for access to many cities in Germany, France, and Luxembourg. Indeed, bus services are co-ordinated so that the bus service compliments the flight timetable...

Frankfurt Airport - big, but not great

Advantages: all kinds of facilities you can possibly think of
Disadvantages: bad signposting, overcrowded, few shops in duty free area, minimum transit unrealistic

The journey takes is 15 minutes and costs around 3 GBP. Local trains depart every 10 minutes at daytime and every 20 minutes at night. SHOPS & FACILITIES Frankfurt is more of a city than an airport. It has hundreds of shops, pharmacies, restaurants, and bars. There are four banks, numerous cash machines, two post offices plus one parcel service branch, one of Frankfurt's most famous discotheques (Dorian Gray), one cinema (not counting the two sex shops with cinemas), hospital, multiconfessional chapels, business and conference centre, yet only one airport hotel (Sheraton). A spooky stay at the Holiday Inn Frankfurt South

Advantages: Friendly staff, reasonable price
Disadvantages: Haunted? Not in the centre of town, not very modern, basic rooms

...I?ve stayed here a couple of times with work. My stays have been fine but I always feel a bit spooked in this hotel. It?s a grey 1970?s style block with other 400 rooms. It?s main purpose seems to be to cater for conferences, it has 23 meeting rooms. It is basically your typical Holiday Inn 4 star hotel (not three star as Ciao seems to have it listed) Now don?t laugh, but on my stays I have kept my bathroom light on and pulled the duvet over my head! The hotel does freak me out a bit, a slight atmosphere. It always seems to be very quiet and it?s quite gloomy inside which doesn?t help. I?ve heard all sorts of rumours about guests staying under the reception desk to sleep, to scared to go back to their rooms, that it?s built on the site of a old hospital that burned down with many deaths, that someone rolled an orange under their bed...

Frankfurt am Main restaurants not expensive

Advantages: "Restaurants: unhurried, relaxing, inexpensive, historical, even medievial" .... "Where?" ... "In Frankfurt am Main." .... "Never ! who do you take me for, save your stupid jokes for someone else !"

Advantages: extensive database of hotels, many quite inexpensive
Disadvantages: if a hotel cheats you, they will apologize, but do nothing.

I have reserved rooms using this service in the past, and have been very pleased. This, however, came to an end this summer. I booked a room at the Travel Inn in Reykjavik, only to find, upon arrival, that my wife, son, and myself were escorted to a car with no explanation. Eventually the clerk told us that we would be driven to the "other" location. The Travel Inn has, it seems, bought space in the Pavi Guesthouse (over a mile away).
