...Durham Marriot Hotel Royal County
Old Elvert, Durham DH1 3JN
A BIT OF SCENE SETTING:
This hotel is part of the Marriott chain but is an old hotel which was once the home of Elizabeth Bowes an ancestor of the Queen Mother. Apparently it was often visited when it was privately owned by Edward VII when he was up in Durham. It has had quite a large series of extensions and now boasts 150 bedrooms, some of which are suites and family rooms all and have en suite bathrooms ( As you might expect in a hotel I would have thought). This is a four star hotel right in the centre of Durham so perfect for a city break as you can park your car in the hotel (complimentary) car park and walk round the city which is very compact and just a hop over the road from the hotel.
We booked on the internet and got a special deal for two night?s bed...
Advantages: An amazing cathedral, Unesco World Heritage site, free entry, Disadvantages: none that I can think of
...as my husband paid as I was busy admiring the ceiling at the time.
GETTING THERE:
We drove to Durham and stayed at the Marriott hotel where we parked our car and after that we walked everywhere. There is a train and bus station and also a park and ride for the city. There are car parks but you do have to pay. If you are disabled then it is possible to drive up to the cathedral area but otherwise although it is an uphill climb I would suggest walking as there didn?t seem to be anywhere to park near the cathedral.
SUMMARY OF MY THOUGHTS
I think the thing that struck me when visiting this cathedral was how friendly and helpful the volunteer staff were. One chap had recently retired and was doing the voluntary work as an interest and to get him out of the house and he told us that he had seen Sting the day before as he had come to check...

Review of Durham (England)
Advantages: A lovely and unusual place to stay Disadvantages: Doesn't quite pull it off all the time
...I had never stayed in a castle before so was really looking forward to this experience. I wasn't disappointed.
If you like to stay somewhere out of the ordinary, then Lumley Castle is certainly worth a visit.
It is situated very close to the A1 in Chester-le-Street in Co Durham. I say close, but you wouldn't know it was anywhere but in the middlie of the country. The approach to the castle is long, impressive and winding, and climbs up a hill. There is a cark park for guests just outside the caslte wall, and also some spaces in the courtyard. The reception is not well marked from the car park, but to be honest there isn't anywhere else you could go, so that doesn't really matter.
The Hotel is a conversion of the castle and it's outbuildings, which surround the courtyard. There is a pleasant garden and seating in...
Advantages: A beautiful place to visit Disadvantages: None
...I do like cathedrals and churches, and have visited quite a few, but I do consider myself lucky enough to live here in the north-east and not far from what I consider to be the best cathedral I have ever seen!
The cathedral I am talking about is Durham Cathedral, built high on a peninsula of land, created by a loop in the River Wear, it can be seen from miles around.
I remember from childhood, when being away from the north-east on holiday or a day trip, returning home up the A1 I would look for Durham Cathedral, and when spotting it in the distance, know I would soon be 'home'. I still think that way to this day!
One of my favourite views of the cathedral is at sunset, there is no better scene than this, the central and western towers dark against a yellow-red skyline is breath-taking.
Bill Bryson described Durham Cathedral as 'the...

Review of Durham (England)
Advantages: best mix of attributes of any university in britain Disadvantages: not a good place for slacking off
...Durham is a beautiful experience from the moment you arrive on the outskirts and see the awesome cathedral and castle towering over the countryside. Five things in favour: (i) collegiate system with 16 unique college experiences ranging from traditional on the bailey to modern on the hill; (ii) highly ranked science and humanities departments with world reknowned faculty that cares about undergrads; (iii) purpose built science site with amazing modern facilities by british standards; (iv) excellent sporting, social and fine arts opportunities for all - not just the few; (v) a happy, engaged, good looking and confident student body that has both high IQ and EQ. The main downside is that it can get quite cold, although at least it rains less and has more sunny days than most other parts of the british isles. Also, Durham is small so it...

Review of Durham University
...I stayed at the Marriott Royal County recently. The hotel is very easy to find. Local shops are only a five minute walk away as are local pubs and restaurants. This hotel also makes a good choice. One problem you might find is trying to find a parking space. This is an ideal location from which to explore Durham. There is an indoor heated pool. The service in the hotel was first class.

Advantages: Gorgeous setting, great service, great food Disadvantages: None... well, maybe the price!
...In the run up to my husband's 40th birthday last year I was repeatedly warned that I wasn't to arrange any form of celebration - no party, no balloons, no embarrassing picture in the local newspaper, no banners hanging in our town's marketplace. No, if I wanted to still be married the day after his fortieth, I was advised to completely forget that it was his birthday at all.
Of course, I couldn't do that and in the weeks before I began searching for somewhere we could go for the night that would be a bit special but not too far from home. After extensive research... ok then, asking a few friends, it appeared that place was Lumley Castle Hotel.
Lumley Castle Hotel is a 14th Century Castle, named after its creator, Sir Ralph Lumley. It is situated in the town of Chester-le-Street, near Durham in Co. Durham and is situated very...
Advantages: Henley of the North Disadvantages: I've not won there yet!
...The premier event in rowing in the North of England, Durham Regatta has often been described as the Henley of the North. Held annually in early-mid June, the regatta is now in its 172nd year with the first regatta having been held in 1834. This makes it the second oldest regatta in the country and is older than even Henley Royal Regatta. It is run by a collaboration of Durham Town Council and members of the club that row on the River Wear in Durham.
In the modern day, the regatta is held over the course of a weekend and attracts beyond 600 crews from all corners of the world. The bulk of these crews are based in Durham and the surrounding area but the prestige of the events has seen crews come from across the UK and even from further afield such as Rotterdam in Holland. In the build up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Men's 4 that...

Advantages: extensive database of hotels, many quite inexpensive Disadvantages: if a hotel cheats you, they will apologize, but do nothing.
...Booking.com: Colluding with Corrupt Hotel Owners to Cheat Customers?
I am sorry to have to write this review, but I have tried for months to get Booking.com to address my complaint. I have reserved rooms using this service in the past, and have been very pleased. This, however, came to an end this summer.
I booked a room at the Travel Inn in Reykjavik, only to find, upon arrival, that my wife, son, and myself were escorted to a car with no explanation. Eventually the clerk told us that we would be driven to the "other" location. The Travel Inn has, it seems, bought space in the Pavi Guesthouse (over a mile away). I would have refused on principle, but I know the situation in Reykjavik is such that I might have had no options. We were driven there, the driver stopped along the way to encourage me to withdraw money from...

Review of Booking.com
Advantages: Easy to meet people, Very reputable University Disadvantages: Condescending, Isolated, Upper-class and ill-Equipped
...I started as an undergraduate in Durham in September 2009 studying Chemistry. Personally I disliked the place so much that I had to move to Leeds where I am now much preferring the student life.
I Originally applied there because of its status and reputation which are very good. At the time it was listed third in the chemistry league table behind Oxbridge. I went on an overnight open day and had an interview. I didn't much like the place then either but I thought it would grow on me (which it didn't). Just goes to show that first impressions are important and you shouldn't pick a university solely based on its reputation.
Durham is a very small 'city' and can feel very claustrophobic. The Hill colleges are so far out of town (relative to the size of Durham) that people can't be bothered to go - I was in Collingwood...
