...We were planning to visit Pompeii but finding a decent hotel close by was as easy as excavating these ancient ruins with a teaspoon. So Naples it was. The Holiday Inn looked perfect for our needs - on the edge of the city towards Pompei and easy access from the autostrade. When I say easy access, I mean 'in theory'...on a map...in my wildest dreams etc. The Holiday Inn is situated in a modern development of high-rise offices and commercial properties called Centro Direzionale directly connected to a link road from the A1 autostrade. But, this being Naples, where stock car racing is not only the principal hobby, it's downright de rigeur, it proved a little more tricky than directed from the hotel's web page. ...At the beginning of April 2004 I spent 24 hours in Naples (on my way to Sardinia), I´d like to take you with me and show you what I saw. I stayed in a hotel in the historical centre, Hotel Sansevero in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore 9; 70 Euro for a single room (clean, quiet, nice modern furniture, small breakfast). The description on the net said, ´easily reachable by underground (Metropolitana) Montesanto station or by bus direction Corso Umberto´. Ha!, says I, nonsense, nothing is easily reachable in Naples that isn´t situated directly beside an underground station. There are only two lines in the whole city and they do not cross the historical centre. If you don´t know which bus number to take (the info on the net didn´t include it) and can´t speak the language well so that you can ask, this means of transportation is not advisable...

La Quinta Inn, Naples, FL: Bang for your Buck!

...Accessible and Clean, on a Budget My girlfriend and I booked through hotwire.com and had a lovely experience. We stayed for 4 days and had an extremely pleasant experience. The website had us booked for a smoking room but we wanted a non-smoking and the manager made sure we were accomodated as soon as we requested a change. He had the staff clean the room to ready it for us even though I never would have guessed it was dirty in the first place. One of the CLEANEST hotels I have ever stayed in. The manager and other staff gave us advice on anything we wanted (restaurants, attractions, even beaches) without ever seeming annoyed. The hotel is extremely close to every thing in Naples and is a short drive from the airport in Ft. Myers. ...Hi Ciaoer's! Some of you know that I met and married an Itallian from Naples,and we lived there,the first 5yrs of our married life. That was back in 1985. In 1984 I was a nanny for a family that lived in Milan.(see my op on Milan) and I ended up in naples with the family of 4 children that I was looking after, whose mother in law was Countess Leonetti from Naples,whose villa we visited when her grandchildren were on their summer holidays to stay with her.(phew! that was rather long winded..!) It is here,I fell in love -not only with my husband, Giuseppe,but naples itself. The place and the neopolitan people are unique, which I will briely describe in a minute.. Anyway,having been there as a tourist,and as a resident I suppose I have the advantage of knowing first hand experience,both sides of the coin. We still go back...

Pompeii to Naples..an archaeologist's playground!

Advantages: Better than time travel!
Disadvantages: If there were any...I've forgotten them!

...The disaster of August 24 AD79 when Vesuvuis erupted and destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum has fasciniated me since the age of 4. So much so that I even did my degree on the place. I backpacked across Italy in 2002 and Pompeii was the first stop on my list. The first thing to note that if you arrive by train from Naples is to realise that there are 2 stops for Pompeii. The scavi or the excvations and other being the new town of Pompeii. Be sure that you get off at the right one. The new town of Pompeii (not the excavations) is nohing special compared to other Italian towns, there are lots of dogs roaming the streets and think twice about driving, all cars are battered to glory! The main church of the town is spectatucular and the town really comes alive at night. Just sit and watch people..young and old as they...

NAPLES - ONE DAY IS QUITE ENOUGH!

Advantages: scenery, atmosphere very stereotypically italian, ice cream
Disadvantages: dirty, smelly, difficult to navigate, roads dangerous

...I visited Naples as part of a cruise holiday around popular mediterranean destinations. I had high hopes, the city, its architecture, its ambience. Above all I was desperate to taste authentic, italian pasta, naples style. I was travelling alone for the duration of the one week cruise but was determined this should be an advantage rather than a pitfall. When the ship docked in Naples I went immediately ashore to enjoy the city and to find myself some beautiful views as well as a nice lunch in an authentic italian restaurant. The views were impressive, I walked (probably the long way round) up to the highest point I could find. My journey took me up steep, and very busy, narrow roads. When I looked down at the view from the top it was as if all the oldest buildings of Naples were crumbled and scattered down the hillside towards...

Cost for the rooms are from 90 Euro a night, up to 150 Euro a night. The Hoilday Inn booking allows advanced booking where you cannot change the booking, but it works out cheaper. My room cost 85 Euro...

...Anyone looking for a job in the media, or even an insight into the big wide world of it, could do much worse than look here to begin with - mediauk.com. Operating since 1994, it lists current available jobs in radio, tv and print media, recent news articles on all these forms of media and a discussion board. Now being a graduate in a degree of this field of work, the jobs board has been an interest to me for quite a while...but don't expect to find work instantly. Anything but. Copious numbers of people view these adverts (you can see how many exactly in the job listings), but don't let that deter you of course - if you're good and experienced enough then you'll come across the job for you eventually. The jobs listed usually just contain a small job description and contact details for where to send your cover letter and CV, but...

...Dictionary.com?! Dictionary.com?! Seriously?! Why, yes, something that seems so simply and basic has it's place on the World Wide Web (yes, I'm aware of the irony!), but fear not...it's not as basic as it seems! Rather than just typing in a word to discover its definition, dictionary.com does provide a far greater service. Since it's launch way back in 1995 (were websites even around then?!), it's one of the world's most popular services, as naturally many people will just type in 'dictionary.com' into their browser if they need to find the definition of a word...even if they don't know the website exists, it makes sense to have a crack at it! The website does provide a thesaurus option, translator and encyclopaedia...for anyone even contemplating steering away from Wikipedia, God forbid! But there are other quirks to the website...
