Tasty Turin

Advantages: Fabulous food, fabulous people, fabulous city
Disadvantages: None

...Being my first trip to Italy I was very excited about the prospect of good food, good wine and of course good sights. Considering that I first thought that I was being asked to go to Truro in Cornwall imagine my delight when I discovered it was actually Turin, Italy (Geography isn?t a strong point of mine). I was only in Turin for 2 nights so only got a taste of the area, but it left me wanting more. ********* History of Turin **************** Describing Turin is not an easy task; the city is known for its cold, greyness and large industries. On the other hand, it is also a fascinating, interesting city. It is a city of charm, rich in historic monuments with the entrepreneurial spirit of a place in continual economic growth. It is very ordered, I was told this is because it was built to an urban plan from the roman period...

An education

Advantages: Scenery, museums, food, shopping
Disadvantages: English not widely spoken - brush up on the basics before you go

...What I knew about Turin you could write on the back of a postage stamp - home of FIAT, famous Shroud, The Italian Job - boy did I have a lot to learn! The capital of the Piedmont region, Torino became home to the Kings of Italy when Vittorio Emanuale II of the House of Savoy (which had reigned in the area for 500 years) was crowned and the beautiful palace, Palazzo Reale (piazza Castello 191) is well worth a visit. Tours take place every hour. Don't be alarmed if you do not get an English speaking guide, there are detailed written descriptions in each room in English and French and you are given time to read them before being moved on. **Getting there and Where to Stay** With Ryannair offering such great deals, even the overnight stay and early departure from Stansted were worth it. Flight time to aeroporto Pertini CASSELLE...

The mistery and the charm

Advantages: A charming town
Disadvantages: No one

...should walk throughout Turin without needing to come out in the open, thank to its 18 kilometers of porticoes that sorround the centre of the town. The town is embraced on three sides from Alpine peaks, (among them the hill of Soperga, whit the sad remind of the crash of the Turin Football Club during the 60's, but also the wonderful Valentine's park, one of the greatest city parks in Italy), while the river Pò crosses it's straight, large promenades. I never had the possibility to visit the Valentine's park (the weekends and my vacation days were working days for my father....), but I visited the Risorgimental National Museum (you can recognize it from the statue of Pietro Micca that stands just in front of the main entrance), the Mole Antonelliana and the Egyptian Museum. I remember that the the Mole Antonelliana was a little...

Baroque experience

Advantages: A town to discover
Disadvantages: new to tourism

...Turin is a regal, baroque toy. Of the early life of this town you can still see the two gates of the roman 'castrum'fortified village): one is the Porta Palatina the other is barely visible because was merged in the Juvara's Palazzo Madama. Of the medieval life only one complete (half abandoned) house. The real soul of this town is the essential baroque of the Savoia dinasty. If you want the look and feel of a XVII-XVIII century town, please, visit Turin. When the Savoia Family (the future kings of Italy) moved from Chambery (France) to Turin they trasformed the little town in a great exposition of their greatness. They call this architectural project 'theatrum sabaudae' the theatre of the Savoia. They build a major Royal Palace in the centre of the town (Palazzo Reale in piazza Castello) and another in the Parco del Valentino, then...

A Day In Capri Italy

Advantages: Lots to see and do
Disadvantages: not enough time

...paying Ciao pronounced Chow Hello Arriverderci Aree'veh'dair'chee Goodbye This got a laugh and two very large glasses of chilled white wine (dry and refreshing). The waiter also brought a large bowl of black olives, a bowl of green olives and a bowl of small salted biscuit's (a bit like pretzels) . This cost about £12.00 and even though its pricey it was worth it. We sat for half an hour and relaxed. Capri's little Piazzetta is one of the best known squares in Italy and is a great place to sit and relax and do a bit of people watching. ~ Parco Augosto-The Gardens Of the Emperor Augustus ~ The garden's of the Emperor...

Venue of next winter olympics

Advantages: a very pretty city
Disadvantages: not much

...This may not be one of those famous magical fairytale Italian cities like Venice,Florence or Pisa but one of the most important cities of northen Italy apart from Milan . This is a lovely city situated at the footsteps of the Alps, bordering France and Switzerland, and is the capital of Piemonte region ( which means ??foot of the mountains?? in French).Personally ,for me, northern Alpine Italian region is more picturesque and serene than the arid southern region .I happened to live here for some months in one of my first visits to this country and hence fondly remember this place. This is historically,a old city with once even boasting of being the capital of Italy in 19th century and has been ruled by French,Austrians,Russians. Also economically speaking ,Torino is an important industrial centre, with this being the birthplace of auto...

Little Italy, Big Disappointment

Advantages: Dancing is fun
Disadvantages: Dinner overpriced and bland, expensive

...I went to Little Italy a few months ago with my girlfriend and have mixed feelings about the place. Situated on Soho's Frith Street it is the heart of a really buzzy and lively area of London. An area in which you are spoilt for choice for dining, especially with Italian restaurants, you have to be doing something right to survive. Little Italy is a restaurant, bar and club. In the latter two it succeeds, in the former, not so. As a restaurant, the first thing you'll notice is the abundance of staff waiting to wait on you but somehow unwilling to do so or be helpful. Then there is the food itself, which is grotesquely overpriced at about £30 per head excluding drinks. The bruchetta was like oiled cardboard and our main meat dish favouring better but still fairly bland. So much so I can't even remember what meat it was, probably beef...

Diamond review  Italy For Beginners

Advantages: it´s nice
Disadvantages: none

...So you´re thinking of travelling to Italy and getting to know the country? If you like shock treatment, fly straight to the South, to Naples or Palermo, and throw yourself into the street life there, if you prefer things to move more slowly, though, it may be a good idea to start exploring the country from the town of Trento, 140 km south of the Austrian/Italian border. It is the first ´real´ Italian town, the area north of it, South Tyrol, is more Austrian due to its history, it only became part of Italy after WW 1. Many people there are bilingual, if they want to become civil servants, they must know Italian and German. The valley of the river Adige on whose banks Trento is situated has been inhabited since prehistoric times it having been one of the main branches of the amber route. The Romans built streets there (The Romans...

The Gate to Italy

Advantages: nice scenery & architecture, fine cuisine, great shops, very relaxing place
Disadvantages: nothing REALLY spectacular in a country full of attractions

...Just a few miles south of the Swiss border, Como is the first town in Italy. Very different in style and culture to Italy's thriving cities, Mediterranean holiday resorts and antique sights, Como exudes the mild charm of Lombardy region. I was a bit surprised myself when I realised that I hadn't written anything yet on Ciao about one of my favourite countries, Italy. So when famous Ciaoer ConnaisseurHaggler said she was going to nearby Milano two weeks ago, I decided it was time I introduced the northern Italian region of Lombardy, and its pearl, Como. Como is two things in one - the city of Como, and the Lago di Como (lake). It is not really a holiday destination for itself, but a place which you shouldn't miss when you are nearby. 1) Como is ideal for a day trip or weekend getaway from Milan, if you want to escape hectic...

A week's successful holiday in St. Agnello, Sorrento (Italy)

Advantages: Excellent, inexpensive public transport
Disadvantages: Traffic is very heavy don't even consider a hire car

...Eight days in St. Agnello, Sorrento, Italy. We have just returned from a very successful week in Sorrento. Arriving at Naples Airport we took the regular bus service to Sorrento as far as St. Agnello which is once stop before Sorrento itself. The journey time should be one hour and the single fare was 10.0?. Having poured over many reviews of hotels in Sorrento area we chose the Alpha and found it to be the Alpha and Omega of Hotels. We couldn?t have asked for anything better; from the moment we walked through the front door we could see that we were going to like it. We were met by a cheerful, smiling, English speaking receptionist who greeted us with the news that they had decided to upgrade our room to a panoramic one with a balcony without extra charge. We were booked for bed and breakfast but after the first evening...
